PODCAzT 07: St. Augustine on John 8

CATEGORY: SESSIUNCULUM, NAPLAM, PODCAzT — Fr. John Zuhlsdorf @ 11:22 pm

Podcast alert! Just to get back into the swing of things, I put together a little piece with some Augustine in Latin and English from the second reading of today’s Office of Readings for the 4th Sunday of Lent, Laetare, also called "Mothering" Sunday and Dominica de rosa.

I made some comments about the "Tridentine" Mass, music and liturgical reform.

    Enjoy!

    WDTPRS TRIUMPHANT

CATEGORY: SESSIUNCULUM — Fr. John Zuhlsdorf @ 10:57 pm

    We’re bigger… we’re faster… but most importantly …

    we’re back.

We are now hosted on Joyent.

You will find WDTPRS to be faster and far more reliable now.

With what we have to work with now… well… I doubt traffic is going to even make the server yawn, much less curl up in a ball and die.  And if, by some chance, this project get’s really big, they have monster servers just waiting in the wings.

    So, have at!

I am deeply grateful to the folks at Joyent, especially DY.  In spite of his interest in Pindar, he seems to be a good fellow.  I am also grateful to the mysterious "Jason", who is the man behind the curtain at this point.

The next project on the table to to fix the ASK FATHER Question Box which is languishing in limbo.

You have been patient.  You have been generous.  I would like to acknowledge that in a special way.

When I say Mass tomorrow, the Feast of St. Joseph, who has always been very good to me, I will bring with me a list of all those who made donations to keep this going.

    What color is liturgical “rose”?

CATEGORY: SESSIUNCULUM, My View — Fr. John Zuhlsdorf @ 10:57 pm

Today is Laetare Sunday, one of the two days of the year when we can use rosacea vestments. I am sure many bloggers will be talking about how rosacea entered into the Roman usage. I will limit myself to showing you what color it is. That is to say, most of the time you will see pink. Pink is not liturgical rose.

Keeping in mind that your monitor might be producing different colors than I can see, here are some shots of a very nice rosacea vestment I saw used this morning here in Rome at the Church Gesu e Maria on the Via del Corso, where a "Tridentine" Mass is celebrated regularly on Sundays and feasts.

    Here is a rosacea vestment

    And a closer look:

    And some detail:

Notice that Roman liturgical rosacea has a slightly orange cast, almost like the flesh of fresh Copper River salmon. ... yum.

I have a set of very old vestments back in the USA which have precisely the same color. And since they, like these, are silk, they are quite splendid when they move in the light.
