Benedict XVI, pope and “confessor” on 29 March

On Thursday 29 March Pope Benedict XVI will hear confessions in St. Peter’s Basilica.  There will be a penance liturgy for young people of the Diocese of Rome with individual confessions heard by priests.  The Pope will use one of the old wooden confessionals in the Basilica as his late predecessor used to do on Good Friday.

Generally, how available are confessions in Rome? In your average parish, is it confined to an hour on Saturday afternoon as it is in so many parishes in the USA?

  2. Paul: It is pretty easy to find priests for confession in Rome. For the most part, parishes I have seen a pretty good availability. I am not sure about parishes on the periphery.

Thanks, Father. Great to know that an example is being sent at the heart of the Church.

I found a great little parish here in LA run by the Oblates of the Virgin Mary where you can find a priest in the confessional all-day Monday through Saturday. You won’t be surprised to hear that there is almost always a line at the confessional or that their 3 daily Masses are all very well attended. Did I mention that this is, I believe, the only Perpetual Adoration parish in the archdiocese? Funny how that works…..

I wouldn’t like to go to confession with the Pope…
    It’s just so embarassing!
