PODCAzT 20: Leo the Great and Benedict - Habemus Papam!

CATEGORY: SESSIUNCULUM, NAPLAM, PODCAzT — Fr. John Zuhlsdorf @ 11:15 pm

Today’s PODCAzT takes us to the 5th century to spend some time with Leo the Great, Pope from 440-461.  Leo was very conscious of the primacy of the Bishop of Rome among all the bishops of the world.  Also, today I talk about the anniversary of the election of Pope Benedict, 2 years ago today!  I have some audio of the annoucement "Habemus Papam!" and his first speech.  On the way out there is the audio of his first Urbi et Orbi Blessing.

    Enjoy!

    Eucharistic Procession at Notre Dame

CATEGORY: SESSIUNCULUM — Fr. John Zuhlsdorf @ 4:21 pm

Everyone who is within striking distance of Notre Dame should give support to the Eucharistic Procession which will take place on 22 April 2007.

On Sunday April 22nd, 2007 the University of Notre Dame will hold its 3rd annual Eucharistic Procession. All are welcome to join the Most Reverend John M. D’Arcy, Bishop of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend and the Notre Dame community as they celebrate and give witness to Christ’s prensence in the Eucharist. Co-sponsored by many different groups from Notre Dame, St. Mary’s, and Holy Cross College, the procession is a revival of an old tradition at the University.

Join us for the 11:45 Mass at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the campus of the University of Notre Dame followed immediately by the procession and a picnic lunch provided by the campus Knights of Columbus. If you intend on participating, please visit the Sign-up page to register.

    Images from a conclave

CATEGORY: SESSIUNCULUM, My View — Fr. John Zuhlsdorf @ 3:42 pm

At the Lateran there has been a wonderful exhibit about the history of conclaves.  There is a display of objects from various conclaves, including that which elected His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI.  Here are a few interesting items.

First, the Cardinals have to get organized and divide up the chores.  They use a system of random selection of wooden balls, each having the name and the number of the Cardinal according to precedence in the college.  These are then placed in a board having indentations according to their roles.

Here you can see the little ball that Joseph Card. Ratinzger had.  As Dean of the College he was #1 (and still is!).

I suppose you could say his was the Power Ball.

    Where are you?

CATEGORY: SESSIUNCULUM — Fr. John Zuhlsdorf @ 8:42 am

Today is the 2nd Anniversary of the election of Pope Benedict XVI.  That was quite a day.   You might chime in to say where you were and what you were doing when you heard the news.

This is what I was doing.   The photo is terribly distorted, since it was shot by someone from a television screen and sent to me.  We look fairly happy:
