PODCAzT 44: St. Monica dies, Augustine weeps; Pope Benedict greets American seminarians
Today we hear from our frequent guest, St. Augustine of Hippo who speaks to us about the death of his mother, St. Monnica in 357 at Ostia, the port of Rome. Augustine describes his mother’s life and death in Book 9 of his Confessions. We hear both English and Latin today.
Also, we learn of the Via Francigena, the famous pilgrimage route. The Holy Father mentioned it during his Angelus address on Sunday. We will hear what happened when the Holy Father greeted the new American seminarians who are beginning their studies in Rome.
Finally, I have some of your voicemail feedback.

Father,
I may be missing this entirely, but do you have an RSS feed of your Podcazts suitable for iTunes and the like?
Comment by Mark — 27 August 2007 @ 3:29 pmOh Father, ignore that—I’ve just seen your big “subscribe with iTunes” button!
Comment by Mark — 27 August 2007 @ 3:45 pmDo you know why the commemoration of Saint Monica was moved from May 4 in the Traditional calendar to August 27 in the new calendar? Was it just so that mother and son could have back to back feast days? I understand that the Augustinians (at least the ones I know) still observe her feast on May 4. Thanks.
Comment by Paul Hargadon — 27 August 2007 @ 5:56 pmPaul asked: Was it just so that mother and son could have back to back feast days?
I don’t know, but I think that’s why they moved her feast.
Comment by Jordan Potter — 27 August 2007 @ 8:32 pmWhat a great idea from the seminarians at the NAC to take the opportunity to sing for the Holy Father! Like Fr. Z said, you could here the delight in his voice when he thanked them! Im sure it also gave him hope to see how much the North American seminarians support and love him!
Comment by Timothy James — 28 August 2007 @ 11:02 amI have been reading your blog for some time now and have just started listening to your podcasts. I just wanted to say thank you for the time and thought you put into this site.
Comment by Michael Fudge — 28 August 2007 @ 1:58 pmHi Father! I just wanted to say I’m a big fan of your podcasts, and I think you are a great example to us all of how to use current media to rejuvenate culture. Keep up the good work!
Comment by Sylvia — 29 August 2007 @ 11:02 amFather, the audio at certain parts seems to have a problem. The reading parts are too soft, it’s inaudible. At around 00:50 into the file, I notice the song fading out, which I guess is a cue for some commentaries. But as the song goes, the commentaries are nowhere to be heard, even until 01:30 when the song fades in again.
Comment by Forzajuv — 29 August 2007 @ 7:33 pmRegarding my previous comment… I tried the podcast again at home, with a better speaker and amplifier, and there is no problem at all.
I guess it was just the low-quality earphone I used at work. Still, it’s weird that the earphone doesn’t complain with the previous podcasts.
