A few days ago I was looking with irritation at a bunch of DVDs I had brought back to the Sabine Farm from Rome, all PAL and European region, unplayable on my equipment here.
I resolved to solve this problem.
Today I was delighted to see the FedEx truck pull up with my new multi-region DVD player.
All connected!
I am with delight watching Don Camillo.
Now I can play any DVD from anywhere even here at The Sabine Farm.
Multi-region DVD player?! I know what I want for Christmas!
Father,
You should get the UK version of the Passion of the Christ.
It has 5 hours of extras includin a theological commentary on the film by two priests and Gibson.
It can only be played on the universal dvd player, and you got one!
God bless you.

There is a Region 1 (N. America) Passion of the Christ Special Edition two disc set that has those features too: click here.
Father, for DVDs from different regions all you need is a simple unlocking code. Just google your DVD player model and words like “unlocking code” and you’ll find it easily. Then set your DVD player to Region 0 and bob’s your uncle! A happy discovery for me on recent rainy afternoons in Dublin with my 4 year old Californian niece!
I did this 2 years ago.
Now I can watch all of my DVDs: Korean, German, British, and American.
It is a most necessary corrective to the unnecessary and restrictive DVD regioning system.
It is made all the more ridiculous by the fact that movie studios usually release big films worldwide simultaneously these days, which eliminates the entire purpose of DVD regions.
That settles it, Padre. We’re moving the party to your place.
How could Don Camillo possibly be better as a movie than as a book?
Inquiring minds …
How do you set the DVD player to region O?
slightly green with jealousy as I’ll bet Don Camillo’s not even available here.
Is it possible to download something to allow you to play other region DVDs on a laptop (I don’t have a TV)? I missed INTO GREAT SILENCE when it was in cinemas earlier this year, and it has not been released on DVD in the US! I am literally chomping at the bit to see that.
For playing DVDs on a computer, try VLC or Mplayer
The first of these is easier to use, the second is powerful, versatile, and complicated.
It’s relatively easy to find a DVD player that can play both NTSC and PAL, but it takes more searching to find one that can play all regions. Some DVD players have unlocking codes that let them play all regions, but not all of them. And some of them can be hacked only if you buy a special remote control.
Surprisingly, some multi-region DVD players are quite cheap, because they are made in China, which doesn’t care about Western corporate rules. But this also means that they break a lot. (I bought a $50 Norcent, and when it broke, I just bought another. Getting a junky Chinese import fixed on warranty is not worth the trouble….)
Enjoy the DVDs, Father Z.
I take it they are they the original Don camillio’s, with Fernandel?
Great stuff those, especially the scene where Don Camillio sounds his church bell every time Pepponi says something ontoward during his speech on the market square, or the one where Peppone comes to church in the middle of the night with a candle taller than himself.
James, the US dvd of Into Great Silence is supposed to be released this fall. You’ll enjoy it.
Don Camillo??? in DVD?? In Movie form? Tell me, how can I get a copy?
Which episode, Father?
…”Don John , Monsignore ma non troppo” ?? ;-)
Syriacus: I think, were I a Monsignor, that I would definitely make the most of it, remembering always the essential difference between a monsignor and a priest.

Peppone: Non ho bisogno di preti, mandalo al diavolo.
Maria: Mandacelo tu.»
