Alfons Maria Card. Stickler, S.D.B. – RIP

I got word that Alfons Maria Card. Stickler, S.D.B. has died.

He was 97 years old.

Card. Stickler was the oldest of the College of Cardinals and a great friend of the traditional Roman liturgy.

May he rest in peace.

The oldest of the College is now my friend and former boss Augustine Card. Mayer, OSB.

  1. Father Bartoloma says:

    Cardinal Stickler did tremendous work in public and behind the scenes to promote the TLM. I will offer Mass for him today (extraordinary form of course).

    Thank you, Your Eminence! Many things would not have happened without you!

  2. Ottaviani says:

    Recquiescant in Pace.

    One of the most faithful Cardinals during the crisis.

  3. Pistor says:

    I remember fondly the Pontifical High Mass he said in St. Patrick’s Cathedral, NYC, back in 1996. Euge serve bone, et fidelis: quia super pauca fuisti fidelis, super multa te constituam; intra in gaudium domini tui.

  4. Prof. Basto says:

    In paradisum deducant te Angeli,
    in tuo adventu
    suscipiant te Martyres,
    et perducant te
    in civitatem sanctam Ierusalem.

    Chorus angelorum te suscipiat,
    et cum Lazaro quondam paupere
    aeternam habeas requiem.

    Requiescat in pace!

  5. Berolinensis says:

    Yes, he was a great man of the Church; may he rest in peace. Retribuere dignare, Domine, omnibus nobis bona facientibus propter nomen tuum vitam æternam. Amen.

    Venerdì 14 dicembre 2007, alle ore 17, all’Altare della Cattedra della Basilica Vaticana, avranno luogo le Esequie del Signor Cardinale Alfons Maria Stickler, S.D.B., del Titolo di San Giorgio al Velabro, Diaconia elevata pro hac vice a Titolo Presbiterale, Archivista e Bibliotecario emerito di Santa Romana Chiesa.
    La Liturgia Esequiale sarà presieduta dal Santo Padre Benedetto XVI.

  6. Jon says:

    Our Lord was kind to him. He lived to see the 7th of July.

    “Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab upon mount Nebo, to the top of Phasga over against Jericho: and the Lord shewed him all the land of Galaad as far as Dan. And all Nephtali, and the land of Ephraim and Manasses, and all the land of Juda unto the furthermost sea, And the south part, and the breadth of the plain of Jericho the city of palm trees as far as Segor. And the Lord said to him: This is the land, for which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying: I will give it to thy seed. Thou hast seen it with thy eyes…”

  7. Melchior Cano says:

    Father,

    What are the chances that the late Cardinal will receive a traditional Requiem?

  8. J Basil Damukaitis says:

    My favorite pic of Card. Stickler has him sitting in choir dress with his glasses in his teeth fixing his rosary! That says it all.

  9. Would it be rubrically permissible to offer a private Requiem Mass tomorrow (Dec 14)since it is done upon receiving news of His Eminence’s Death?

  10. EJ says:

    Melchior – the funerals of cardinal-members of the Roman Curia who have died in Rome are usually celebrated by His Holiness himself, as will be the case of the funeral of His Eminence, RIP. As mentioned already above, I was thinking and giving thanks for the fact that Cardinal Stickler lived to see Summorum Pontificum decreed. The first images of the traditional Mass that I ever saw were as a young teen over the internet of the late Cardinal offering the usus antiquior at Gricigliano. May he RIP.

  11. Melchior Cano says:

    EJ:

    I understand that His Holiness will offer the Requiem Mass. I’m still wondering about the chances that this will be in the traditional usage.

  12. Legisperitus says:

    Sacerdos– I am not certain, but I believe a Requiem Mass is permitted on a feria of Advent on the anniversary of either death or burial. Logically, it seems that it should be also allowed on a feria of Advent on the actual day of the burial.

  13. Daniel Latinus says:

    Requiescat in pacem, et omnes dicant, Amen.

  14. EJ says:

    Melchior – one can only hope, right? With Msgr. Guido Marini now at the helm of the Office of Lit. Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff, and the notable improvements we’ve witnessed on just a few occasions, anything is possible, though maybe this will be too hard to pull off in just a day. I agree that the funeral Mass in the usus antiquior is most appropriate for the late Cardinal.

  15. Anthony says:

    Sacerdos in Aeternum:
    Mass after receiving news of a death is a Requiem Mass of 2nd Class; the 14th December is a feria of the 3rd Class, so I presume it should be okay to offer Mass tommorrow; a 2nd class trumps a 3rd! :c)

  16. David Kubiak says:

    I had the privilege of attending two of the Cardinal’s old rite Masses, and have heard great stories about him, e.g., that after he finished the prayers at the foot of the altar at St. Patrick’s he looked around and said ‘Was jezt’? And his Germanized Latin on the tape is most endearing: “Mea gulpa, mea gulpa, mea magzima gulpa”.

    He and Cardinal Ottaviani must be greeting each other with the heavenly version of a high five.

    In pace aeterna requiescat.

  17. Derik Castillo says:

    May God show him His infinite mercy by forgiving
    all his sins and allowing him to be on God’s right
    hand side.

  18. Al says:

    May he rest in peace..

  19. SMJ says:

    Réquiem æternam dona ei, Dómine.
    Et lux perpétua lúceat ei.
    Requiéscat in pace.
    Amen.
    Anima ejus, et ánimæ ómnium fidélium defunctórum, per misericórdiam Dei requiéscant in pace.

  20. malta says:

    I have read that Cardinal Stickler was a temendously kind and
    humble man, and, of course, probably the greatest friend of
    traditionalists in the college of Cardinals.

    Requiescat in pace.

  21. joe says:

    He will be so sorely missed…my mind immediately leaps to II Tim. 4:7.

    Requiescat in Pace,

    -J.

  22. Father J says:

    And so another great light goes out amidst the busyness of the Church Militant… only to ascend, we pray, through the Church Expectant, to become amidst the Church Triumphant.

    + RIP Pater Optime

    Mass (EF) will be offered.

  23. Joshua says:

    In response to a question above

    402. First class Masses of the Dead are:
    a) Masses of the day of the commemoration of all the faithful departed;
    b) The funeral Mass.

    Hence this could be said even on a Sunday in Advent (there are a few exceptions listed)

    410. Second Class Masses of the dead are:
    a) Masses for the day of death;
    b) The Mass after receiving news of the death;
    c) The Mass at the final burial of the deceased.

    This cannot be said on a 1st Class feast or any Sunday, even 2nd class.

    Advent feriae become 2nd class after the 16th btw.

    415. Third class Masses of the Dead are:
    a) the Mass on the 3rd, 7th and 30th day from the death or burial;
    b) a Mass “on the anniversary”;
    c) Masses of the dead in cemetery churches and chapels;
    d) Masses of the dead within the octave of the commemoration of all the faithful departed.

    423. Fourth class Masses of the dead are other “daily” Masses of the dead, which may be celebrated instead of the Mass corresponding to the office of the day, only on ferias of the fourth class outside of Christmastide.
    It is most fitting that these 4th class Masses of the dead be said only when they are really applied either for the deceased in general or for certain designated deceased persons.

  24. Chris Garton-Zavesky says:

    I think it was Michael Davies (RIP) who first made me aware of this amazing Cardinal. Truly a prince of the Church.

    May he rest in peace.

  25. Fr. W says:

    Cardinal Stickler wrote a masterful little book which I just read called The Case for Clerical Celibacy in which he proves that though many priests were married in the early Church, continence was ALWAYS expected. It is for this reason that one’s wife would have agreed to this before the Ordination, and therefore, as St. Paul says, ‘bishops should be married only once.’ This is a slam-dunk book. Don’t know why it was never mentioned in seminary – ok, I know why. Great man.
