    Many thanks

CATEGORY: SESSIUNCULA — Fr. John Zuhlsdorf @ 5:15 pm

I want to extend thanks to PG who sent a book from my amazon wish list and DP who sent a music CD, also from that list.  I am very grateful.

It is nice to see that truck pull or find little packages when I come home.  Many thanks.

Also, I am very grateful to you who recently have used the donation button on the side bar.  You are of great help.

Question about incensing the altar at vespers

I got a good question from a priest friend via e-mail.  This could be a good point of discussion.

Any word on why the Holy Father did not incense the altar personally at vespers [that is, papal vespers on 31 December], or why it was done using two deacon-thurifers instead of one?

With all of the restoration going on, I couldn’t imagine the Pope or Marini innovating – is it some obscure part of former Papal ritual?

Just curious, and I haven’t seen any further discussion about it on any of the comboxes.

Here is an image I posted a few days ago.

As you can see, the (Non-cardinalatial) deacons  incensed the altar.

I have been celebrant for solemn vespers quite a few times.  In that role I incensed the altar.

    What’s up with this?

Another request for help: good albs and surplices for a priest

CATEGORY: ASK FATHER Question Box, Mail from priests, SESSIUNCULA — Fr. John Zuhlsdorf @ 11:34 am

A priest wrote to asking for a good source of good… well… here’s his mail.

I am in the market for a nice alb and surplice that has plenty of manly lace (such we have seen adorning the Papal Master of Ceremonies as of late).  Do you know of any good, quality, and economic business that would sell such items?  Places with websites (especially if they are not [?] stateside) would be helpful.

I think Father must have meant especially if they are in the United States…. since he was writing from the USA.

Let’s put our heads together to help this priest.  Other’s will benefit as well.

On a personal note: I am grateful to a long time reader of this blog and my columns, H, and his wife, A, for providing me with a very nice linen alb.  I had brought back from Rome an old surplice with some nice lace, but the surpice was unusable.  A took the lace off and then applied it to the alb.  You can see me wear this alb with some frequency at the chapel of the Sabine Farm, and it is visible on the Z-Cam when I go live.

So, that is another way to go.  If you have old albs or surplices, you might consider salvaging the lace.

Finally, if you are thinking about getting an alb or surplice for a priest, you might want to consult him first.

Great news from Raleigh, NC: Epiphany - Solemn Mass coram pontifice

CATEGORY: SESSIUNCULA — Fr. John Zuhlsdorf @ 11:03 am

I get some very good new via e-mail about what is happening in the Diocese of Raleigh about Summorum Pontificum and the use of the older form of Mass.  You will remember that Bishop Burbidge is really stepping up to the plate in implementing the Holy Father’s provisions.

Here is a piece from the diocesan website

The Forma extraordinaria of the Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Cathedral on the Solemnity of the Epiphany, Sunday, January 6, at 4:30 PM. Father Paul Parkerson, pastor of Sacred Heart in Dunn, will be the celebrant for this Mass in the presence of the Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge. Beginning with this Mass, the Forma extraordinaria will be celebrated at the Cathedral on the first Sunday of every month at 4:30 PM.

At present, three other churches in the Diocese of Raleigh have scheduled regular celebrations of the Forma extraordinaria:

        * Saint Therese Church in Wrightsville Beach is celebrating the Forma extraordinaria on the last Sunday of each month at 3:30 PM.
        * Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Rocky Mount is celebrating the Forma extraordinaria on the second Sunday of each month at 4:00 PM.
        * The Mass at Sacred Heart Church in Dunn, which had been celebrated each week at 4:00 p.m., is now celebrated at 12:00 p.m.

In his letter announcing the implementation of the Apostolic Letter Summorum Pontificum on September 7, 2007, Bishop Burbidge said it was his intention “to make the Forma extraordinaria more available to the faithful.” He noted resources would be made available “to those priests who are able and choose to study how to properly celebrate the Forma extraordinaria of the Mass so that he and the people of God will be best served.”

Liturgical formation for priests interested in celebrating the Forma extraordinaria continues with a workshop scheduled January 8-10 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Newton Grove. Fourteen priests are expected to attend.

As priests receive the necessary formation to celebrate the Mass, it will be made available at more parishes in the Diocese, where possible.

This is exceptionally good news.  We applaud Bp. Burbidge for his good work.

On that note: I received this notice from Raleigh via e-mail:

[N]ext week – on Tuesday, Jan 8 – Thurs. Jan. 10, there will be a training seminar for several priests of the diocese (at least – but more like 10-12) in how to offer the TLM. We have asked Fr. Robert Ferguson, FSSP, to teach the "workshop".

Also, check this site for some photos.

Fr. Z ask your help: LATIN propers for St. John Neumann - urgent

CATEGORY: SESSIUNCULA — Fr. John Zuhlsdorf @ 10:06 am

A priest friend just called me looking for the LATIN propers for St. John Neumann.

I have looked through some of my things and cannot find them, which is odd.

    HELP!!

In that note, you might be interested to know that St. John Neumann has had a change of vestments.

Here is a shot of Card. Rigali of Philadelphia at the changing and, I suppose, recognitio.

I believe I see a maniple with these Roman style vestments:

They got him out of those dreadful old polyester things:

The saint’s feast is 5 January.

I tip my biretta  o{]:¬)  to Philadelphia Roamin’ Catholic for the images.

    UPDATE:  4 Jan 2008 16:26 GMT

I tip my biretta to Fr. PA who tipped me off that the propers were in the FSSP Ordo.  Eureka!

    COLLECT:
Deus, qui beatum Ioannem Confessorem tuum atque Pontificum
    pastoralibus ministeriis clarescere voluisti;
concede propitius: ut eius monita et exempla sectantes,
    vitam consequamur aeternam.  Per Dominum.

    SECRET (SUPER OBLATA):
    Hostiam, quam tibi, Domine,
in honorem beati Pontificis Ioannis offerimus,
propitius respice: et ignem tui amoris,
quo ipse flagravit, in nobis accende.  Per Dominum.  (Per Christum.)

    POSTCOMMUNION:
Pretioso Corpore et Sanguine dilecti Filii tui, Domine, recreati,
    te supplices exoramus;
ut beati Ioannis meritis, ipsum Pontificum pastorum secuti in terris,
ad pascua perveniamus aeterna.  Qui tecum vivit.  (Per Christum.)

Now that we have these, I would like to know if any Redemptorists out there might have propers.

    Let’s keep working on this!

Latin Mass Catholics Prepare for World Youth Day 2008

Latin Mass Catholics Prepare for World Youth Day 2008

Download this press release as an Adobe PDF document.

    My emphases and comments.

Brooklyn, NY (PRWEB) January 4, 2008—A youth movement for Catholics devoted to the classical form of the Roman liturgy (the so-called [well put!] "Latin Mass") is planning to attend World Youth Day 2008 in Sydney, Australia. Juventutem [I wish it had an "I" rather than a "J"...] derives its name from a Latin word for "youth" and is a multi-national organization dedicated to the daily sanctification of young Catholics through traditional devotions and liturgy. Pope Benedict has recently advocated a wider use of the Latin Mass in the Church in his papal letter "Summorum Pontificum," and devotion to this "extraordinary rite" of the Roman liturgy is growing. [Contrary to sour grapes reports.]

One of the most surprising news stories to come out of World Youth Day 2005 in Cologne, Germany was the presence there of a group of young Catholics, numbering some 1000-strong, who were worshipping God using some of the oldest rites in the Catholic Church—including the Tridentine (or "Latin") Mass. This multi-national group called itself "Juventutem", a term which appears at the beginning of the pre-Vatican II missal of the Catholic liturgy: "Introibo ad altare Dei. Ad Deum qui laetificat juventutem meam," meaning "I will go up to the Altar of God. To God, who gives joy to my youth."

Newspapers and magazines covered the story of these unusual young people who were so devoted to the ancient traditions, music and devotions of the Catholic Church. Cardinal Francis George (USA), Cardinal George Pell (Australia), Bishop Fernando Arêas Rifan (Brazil) and Archbishop Raymond Burke (USA) were among those Church dignitaries celebrating liturgies and leading devotions for Juventutem in 2005, which were often attended by WYD pilgrims coming from other groups to participate in the beautiful Masses and experience Gregorian chant.

Although 2005 was the beginning of Juventutem, much has happened in the intervening three years. It is now not so unusual to hear of a group of people devoted to the classical form of the Roman liturgy in the Catholic Church. In July of 2007, Pope Benedict issued a papal letter entitled "Summorum Pontificum", in which he advocated a wider use of these liturgical books in the Church. One reason for doing so, in fact, was the widespread devotion to these liturgical forms by young Catholics throughout the world.

"Immediately after the Second Vatican Council it was presumed that requests for the use of the 1962 Missal would be limited to the older generation which had grown up with it," the Holy Father writes in his letter to bishops accompanying "Summorum Pontificum", "But in the meantime it has clearly been demonstrated that young persons too have discovered this liturgical form, felt its attraction and found in it a form of encounter with the Mystery of the Most Holy Eucharist, particularly suited to them."

Juventutem and other groups devoted to what Pope Benedict has now termed the "extraordinary form" of the Roman Rite are not the curiosity they once might have been in 2005.

Juventutem has now become an international youth movement whose goal is the daily sanctification of Catholic youth through Roman traditions. A contingent of Juventutem members will meet this summer in Australia for WYD 2008, and the organizers plan a 2-week long schedule of religious and cultural events.

Juventutem USA has organized a WYD 2008 group package, led by Rev. Fr. Denis Buchholz of the Institute of Christ the King, Sovereign Priest. This priestly order, founded in 1990, is entirely devoted to the liturgical forms of the extraordinary rite. Fr. Buchholz was part of Juventutem at WYD 2005 and is currently pro rector of Old St. Patrick Roman Catholic Oratory in Kansas City, MO. The schedule of events includes daily Mass according to the extraordinary rite; lauds, vespers, and compline on most days; catechesis and rosary; attendance at the Papal Mass; and of course, some days to explore Australia. All Catholics aged 16-30 are welcome to join the group.

For more information on joining Juventutem USA in Australia for WYD 2008, please visit www.juventutemusa.org.
