Video of the great Archbp. Ranjith (Sec. CDWDS) on liturgy

CATEGORY: SESSIUNCULUM — Fr. John Zuhlsdorf @ 12:53 pm

I have been alerted to these videos from gloria.tv of His Excellency Most Rev. Malcolm Ranjith, Secretary of the Cong. for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments.

The videos, here and here, have been edited a little.  And the sound is not perfect.  However, Archbp’s comments are very apt.  He exemplifies an excellent sense of humor.

One of them concerns the use of Latin as a sacred language for the Latin Rite.

He mentions false understanding of "active participation" and Communion in the hand, Mass as mere "celebration".  He warns against the attitude that just because a liturgical practice is old, or ancient, it is there best.

He talks about Pope Benedict’s purposes for issuing Summorum Pontificum, connecting his motive to salus animarum suprema lex, the supreme law of the Church is the salvation of souls.

Do it yourself liturgy.  He compares abusive creativity or the imposition of personal preferences, which are "disastrous", as making oneself like God.

He also obliterates the false claim that "because Jesus faced the apostles at the Last Supper, we should have Mass facing the people".  In the ancient world, people reclined to eat, facing more or less the same direction with their couches arranged in a "U".

    You might enjoy these.

Memorial day: a WWI vet … yes… WWI

CATEGORY: SESSIUNCULUM — Fr. John Zuhlsdorf @ 10:07 am

Biretta tip to the Cafeteria for this one:

    The Last Doughboy

    From MSNBC
Frank Woodruff Buckles, the last known living American-born veteran of World War I, was honored Sunday at the Liberty Memorial during Memorial Day weekend celebrations.

"I had a feeling of longevity and that I might be among those who survived, but I didn’t know I’d be the No. 1," the 107-year-old veteran said at a ceremony to unveil his portrait.

His photograph was hung in the main hallway of the National World War I Museum, which he toured for the first time, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States presented him with a gold medal of merit.

On Monday, he will be presented the American flag flying outside the memorial.

Buckles, who now lives in Charles Town, W.Va., has been an invited guest at the Pentagon, met with President Bush in Washington, D.C., and rode in the annual Armed Forces Day Parade in his home state since his status as one of the last living from the "Great War" was discovered nearly two years ago.

His burial to be in Arlington
Federal officials have also arranged for his burial at Arlington National Cemetery.

Born in Missouri in 1901 and raised in Oklahoma, Buckles visited a string of military recruiters after the United States entered the "war to end all wars" in April 1917.

He was rejected by the Marines and the Navy, but eventually persuaded an Army captain he was 18 and enlisted, convincing him Missouri didn’t keep public records of birth.

Comment problems and anti-spam word difficulties

CATEGORY: SESSIUNCULUM — Fr. John Zuhlsdorf @ 9:25 am

There are still problems with the comments.

Yes, I am getting your e-mails that you can see the anti-spam word.  I know also that there is a long long delay for the comments to appear.

I can’t fix this myself immediately.

Something was done to the server, some sort of cache, I think.  Until this is adjusted, and I can’t do it myself, I suspect this will persist.

People can help themselves out by registering.  Registered WDTPRSers don’t have to use the anti-spam word at all.  I reserve the right to refuse particular registrations or alter them.
