   I feel the same way. The more the hypocritical leftist media attacks Sarah Palin, the more it attacks ordinary women, who make up the majority – a silent majority that will exercise it’s right to vote for for McCain-Palin.

   It’s funny how different people see different things. While there are certainly some areas of the media I would call “left-leaning” or “liberal,” I’ve always, by and large, considered the media to lean to the right.

   Much of the blogosphere is liberal. That’s a given. But the overwhelming majority of talk radio is conservative. Of the “three big” news channels, CNN could be considered, I suppose, very slightly-left leaning, but it is still home to conservatives like Glenn Beck. MSNBC is middle of the road, I would say, although of course Keith Olberman is liberal. Finally, Fox is ragingly conservative to the point of shameless propoganda. I guess the one “liberal” is Colmes, but he gets little playtime. That show is 90% Hannity, 10% Colmes.

   So, I’m not saying others are wrong, but I’ve never really bought into the oft-repeated “liberal media” idea.

   …Although Wolf Blitzer is annoying me a bit lately with his somewhat partisan commentary. And if that level of partisan news reporting bothers me, you can imagine what the likes of poor Sean Hannity (who despite claiming to be a devout Catholic takes issue, I believe, with the Church’s immutable teaching on contraception), Glenn Beck, Bill O’Reilly (though I find him personally entertaining and oddly likable), etc.

   Garrett: I think it’s as simple as this: When you lean left yourself, it’s easier to see right-leaning bias than left-leaning bias; and vice versa. I see CNN and the Big 3 leaning clearly to the left, and Fox as fair and balanced.

   Obviously when you’re talking about shows like Hannity and O’Reilly, they lean way right, but those really don’t apply because they are *opinion* shows, not news; just like Olberman. You have to look at how the *news* is covered, and more importantly, what assumptions underlie the way they report the news.

    A few things that clue me in that the media leans left:
    – Controversy regarding embyronic stem cell research nearly always leaves out the word “embryonic”, thus painting anyone who would object as religious anti-science zealots.
    – Planned Parenthood representatives are interviewed or quoted as experts on family planning and women’s health issues
    – Non-coverage of certain events — such as the 3000 gathered with Archbishop Chaput, Dr. Alveda King, and other ministers in an outdoor prayer service and protest at a new Planned Parenthood building.
    – Coverage of small groups of protesters if they’re protesting liberal causes

    Over at The Creative Minority Report (as borrowed from the Catholic Thing) Patrick posted a quote that reveals a great deal about the liberal nature of the mainstream news media. I emphasize news because, as has been stated before, talk radio and opinion shows don’t count when determining the bias of the mainstream news because they simply aren’t news. They are entertainment.

    Anyhoo, here’s the quote…

    Where is it written that only senators are qualified to become President?…Or where is it written that mere representatives aren’t qualified …Where is it written that governors and mayors, …, are too local, too provincial?…Presidential candidates have always chosen their running mates for reasons of practical demography, not idealized democracy…. What a splendid system, we say to ourselves, that takes little-known men, tests them in high office and permits them to grow into statesmen. . . . Why shouldn’t a little-known woman have the same opportunity to grow?. . . .the indispensable credential for a Woman Who is the same as for a Man Who – one who helps the ticket.

    This is an excerpt from a piece in the NY Times 24 years ago written in support of Geraldine Ferraro. If you truly don’t think the media is biased, count up the heavy hitting outlets that you can think of that would print anything similar today about Sarah Palin. Fox? Sure. Others? Good luck. The big players simply don’t come to the rescue of conservatives like they will for a liberal.

    Garrett, I’m afraid good man, that you have a slim hold on reality. Let’s take a little test.
    Have you ever seen a news report on CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC, or MSNBC which even remotely suggests that having an abortion may leave the woman with severe emotional or physical damage. You’ll never find it except if the writer is debunking it or considers such a theory hopelessly benighted. Test 2: Have you seen on the same “news” networks any suggestion that children adopted by same sex couples might have problems? Funny, in their “news” judgment there is only one answer, there is never a “nuance” or another side to those issues. Anyone that would suggest otherwise would get laughed out of those news rooms. I don’t consider that moderate or conservative news judgment. I call it left-wing ideology dressed up as news. Tom
