“This blog is rather like a fusion of the Baroque ‘salon’ with its well-tuned harpsichord around which polite society gathered for entertainment and edification and, on the other hand, a Wild West “saloon” with its out-of-tune piano and swinging doors, where everyone has a gun and something to say. Nevertheless, we try to point our discussions back to what it is to be Catholic in this increasingly difficult age, to love God, and how to get to heaven.” - Fr. Z

Father,
Don’t be silly women can’t be Cardinals…
Are those rare in your area? Down south they are quite common.
Try black oiled sunflower seeds——or just the sunflower “hearts”. Almost all species are found of the “hearts” and they dispense from most feeders quite easily.
“NEWSFLASH…Father Z comes out in favor of female cardinals.”
(Sure I was beaten to the punch line, but so what?)
Yep, that is a female cardinal.
There is likely to be a very red male somewhere around.
The sunflower seeds really are their favorite. The hanging feeders are best for depriving squirrels of your sunflower seeds.
So then a female CAN be a cardinal!
If you keep the feeders full of sunflower seeds, you’ll have half the cardinals in the county at your feeder come winter. The red of the males against the white of the snow is a striking view, and helps boost spirits as winter drags on.
Beautiful photos!

Yes, it is a female. Males are more beautiful and colorful. We have a lot of them here in Texas.
