Did you know that a new, reimaging of the original Star Trek – a movie – is being made?
I didn’t.
I am not much of a trekkie, I think.
I saw a still on one of the Catholic blogs out there… sorry, I can’t remember which one.
It looks pretty interesting from the photos I have found.
The actor who plays Sylar, Zachary Quinto, on the weird and disjointed TV comic book Heros will be Mr. Spock.
All the characters are pretty young, it seems.

Well, the movie can’t be any more self-destructive than the current season of Heroes.
Those are the first pics I’ve seen. It looks a little too bright and glossy.
Quinto could be good as Spock. “Save the cheerleader, save the world.”
Data could whoop Spock any day.
Yes, it’s been in the works for quite some time.
Reboot is the buzzword that keeps getting used. New actors playing the original series characters, new movie set early in the characters’ time together. As opposed to the assorted remastered, restored, enhanced editions of the original episodes and movies.
In the pilot of the original series from the mid sixties with Jeffery Hunter of ‘King of Kings’ fame, they used printers and paper.
In the last series with Scott Bakula that was set beforehand, they had cool digital readouts and all that.
If this movie doesn’t try hard to capture the technological feel, I will be disillusioned forever.
I watched Star Trek II: Wrath of Kahn yesterday, amazing movie! They continue to bring out new stuff, but they tend to get worse.
So bogus. Everybody knows Spock went to the Academy at least ten or twenty years before Kirk. Kirk’s Academy years were spent with folks like Gary Mitchell and the loathsome Finnegan, not Spock. Next thing you know, they’ll make Starbuck a woman.
Oh, well, another ten bucks saved. :)

I wonder if the movie will have the same type of memorable lines as the original series, such as:
McCoy: Once, just once, I’d like to be able to land someplace and say “Behold, I am the Archangel Gabriel.”
Spock: I fail to see the humor in that situation, Doctor.
McCoy: Naturally. You could hardly claim to be an angel with those pointed ears, Mr. Spock. But say you landed someplace with a pitchfork…

Padre Steve, Star Trek is based on Gene Roddenberry’s philosophy of humanism. While not New Age, it does have some issues that conflict with the deeper theological constructs of Catholicism. However, the various movies and series provide hope that one day humanity can come together and learn how to better themselves, rather than one group dominating over another. By this time, you should have realized I am a devoted Trekkie and if I had it my way, Holy Mass would end with, “Live long and prosper.” If Fr. Z would wish to humor me, I wonder how that phrase would look in Latin?

I’m sad to say this was probably one of the 69 new ending for Mass that was rejected by the Biblical synod…

I’ve always felt that the patron saint of Trekkies should be St. Martin de Porres, who transported a group of brothers back to the rectory in time for Vespers when they stayed too late at a picnic. Beam me up, St. Martin.
