For those in the Washington, D.C. area, Rev. Fr. John C. De Celles will offer a High Requiem Mass for all the faithful departed tonight at Saint Mary’s in Old Town Alexandria, the first Catholic church in the commonwealth of Virginia.
For those in the Boston, Mass., area, Fr. Augustin Anda will celebrate a High Requiem tonight at 7pm at St. Columbkille’s parish on 321 Market St. in Brighton.
Dumb question…
What is first Friday?
Jim
For those in NYC, tonight at 6:30PM, the Oratory of the Sacred Heart will have its
monthly Mass to promote greater devotion to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.
This Mass will be a sung Requiem Mass at the Church of the Guardian Angel
(West 21st Street and 10th Avenue).
Off the top of my head… “First Friday” is the devotion of going to Mass every first Friday of the month, or a certain number of First Fridays in a row, in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. A lot of people try to go to confession, too.
http://miraclerosarymission.org/shj.htm
“First Saturday” is similar. Our Lady of Fatima asked people to go to Mass on a certain number of First Saturdays (nine, I think).
http://www.memorare.com/mary/firstsat.html
(No guarantees on the sites, but the pages themselves look fine and they came up first.)
First Friday is also the day there is usually Eucharistic Adoration starting at the end of morning Mass and going to the beginning of the vigil Mass on Saturday. At least around here.
I have the 11-midnight shift.
For First Friday we have day-long Eucharistic Exposition after the 7:45am Mass, Vespers at 6:30pm, and Reposition at 8:30.
Begun as a lay apostolate with about 20 people in attendance, 10 of them members of the Schola, our most recent Vespers had about 200 people in the congregation. The parish priests have also joined us so the Vespers service now includes Benediction.
Just off now to the Dublin one, at 7pm. It’s the Missa pro Defunctis.
Maureen: the First Saturday devotion is 5 consecutive first Saturdays of the month.
Oops, sorry, I forgot, I am not doing my shift tonight, my friend is taking over for me. Please pray for me and my Mom, she is coming home tomorrow from the rehab place after 10 days in the hospital (with everything gone wrong all at once). I need to go to bed early tonight to deal with the new nursing routine, meals on wheels, etc. Please pray that I do everything right and Mom gets better. She certainly has a lot of fight left! She goes Grrrrr when I mention assisted living!
Re: Ohio Annie’s mom —
Praying.
Re: numbers
This is why I need a cheat sheet/prayer book. :)
I was heading to Mass after I put the kids on the bus. [They don't have a wacky school mass on Friday's, so it's a respectable occasion. We're in the public school.]
I felt such chills and my bones ached. I slept in as I had desired for some days. I was feeling better, but now it’s kicking in again. It’s getting colder and cloudy here in STL Metro.
Very special day this particular first Friday – a little boy was born very prem but very well Praise be to God. His Mother wheeled into theatre at the hour of Passion !!
My fifth grandchild.
