Penjing goes out now when the temps rise and there is sun.
Penjing’s much larger cellmate, the Jasmine Tree, has a few blossoms. Very fragrant in the house.
Soon they will be released from strict winter captivity.

I planted some Jasmine this year, too. It gives a nice fragrance while I tend to the vegetable garden.

Father, I have one small bird feeder in front of my house that is attacked
every day by 25-35 sparrows, a few doves, a couple of pigeons, and one squirrel.
I fill it every morning when I first get up and by lunchtime, or sooner, it’s
empty. I can’t imagine how you keep up with that horde you have.
Squirrels can sometimes be “distracted” from your feeders by nuts and dried corn on the cob set aside near the feeder, then move it bit by bit away. Doves/pigeons prefer to feed on flat/ground areas, so scattering a little on the ground for them works as well.

I barely do. Though yesterday I found a new local source for seed. I have been buying it at a Walmart, where it was cheapest. But I found a small, independent wild bird store opened optimistically by a woman a few months ago. With an annual membership I will get a 15% discount on the seed which will bring the price below that of Walmart and pay for itself pretty soon. I would also much rather support a small business, especially in this environment. Also, I learned some useful things from the owner, who is a true fanatic.

I used to have a standup bird feeder in my backyard, and after filling it in the morning, the birds and squirrels would have a feeding frenzy! I had to go out and fill it again! And that was hard when the snowdrifts were deep!
But it’s nice to hear the birds singing-a cardinal was singing its brains out when I left my house this morning!

Those “sock feeders” look cheap, but thistle (nyjer) is not only an expensive seed, but finches eat like mad!
