I like to brag that I met Fr. Corapi before he became famous, in the year following his ordination, I believe, when he happened to offer the Holy Sacrifice at St Anthony’s Monastery, Kennebunkport, ME, where I went to Mass while vacationing that year. I spoke to him afterwards and was really captivated by him. It was also the first time I had heard of SOLT, even though living here in Houston, just up the road.
Comment by Woody Jones — 25 May 2009 @ 11:50 pmOur parish priest is celebrating his 26th anniversary this week. Is that a coincidence or do ordinations typically take place between the Feast of the Ascension and Pentecost?

The Hands of the Priest
We need them in life’s early morning.
We need them again at its close.
We feel their warm clasp of true friendship.
We seek them when tasting life’s woes.
When we come to this world we are sinful,
The greatest as well as the least
And the hand that makes us as pure as angels
Is the beautiful hand of the priest.
And when we are tempted to wander,
To the pathways of shame and of sin
Tis the hand of the priest will absolve us,
Not once, but again, and again.
And when we are taking life’s partner,
Other hands may prepare us a feast,
But the hand that will bless and unite us
Is the beautiful hand of the Priest.
At the Altar each day we behold them.
And the hands of a King on this throne
Are not equal to them in their greatness
Their dignity stands all alone.
For there in the stillness of morning
‘Ere the sun has emerged from the East
Our God rests between pure fingers
Of the beautiful hands of the Priest.
May God bless and keep them all holy.
For the Host which their fingers caress.
What can a poor sinner do better
Than to ask him, who chose them, to bless.
And when death dews on our eyelids are falling
May our courage and strength be increased
By seeing raised over us in blessing
The beautiful hands of the Priest.
From a prayer card published in England by the Carmelite Press some 45 years ago.

A belated congratulations on your ordination anniversary, Fr. Z!
Isn’t that cool-you and Fr. Corapi being ordained by John Paul II on the same day! And Mother Teresa was there, too!
We of your ‘virtual parish’ love you-and all priests, too!
My priest-friend from England, Fr. Kevin Foulkes, will be celebrating his 27th anniversary this coming Sunday (Pentecost). It was the exact same day that he was ordained by JP II in 1982, the last day of the Holy Father’s visit to Britain!

Comment by Lois — 26 May 2009 @ 6:19 pmCongratulations and Happy Anniversary! I daily pray for you and, indeed, for all priests for all the sacrifices that you have made for all of us.
Comment by Jayna — 26 May 2009 @ 7:05 pmFor Fr. Z and for all priests:
Keep them; I pray Thee, dearest Lord.
Keep them, for they are Thine
The priests whose lives burn out before
Thy consecrated shrine.
Keep them, for they are in the world,
Though from the world apart.
When earthly pleasures tempt, allure-
Shelter them in Thy heart.
Keep them and comfort them in hours
Of loneliness and pain,
When all their life of sacrifice
For souls seems but in vain.
Keep them and remember, Lord,
they have no one but Thee.
Yet, they have only human hearts,
With human frailty.
Keep them as spotless as the Host,
That daily they caress;
Their every thought and word and deed,
Deign, dearest Lord, to bless.

Comment by Fr. Totton — 27 May 2009 @ 10:26 amI am out of the loop for two days and I miss the anniversary of your ordination, Father Z! I wish I had a chance to have read/watched this on Monday. Happy belated anniversary, you are always in my prayers!
And, thanks to everyone who posts their opinions, experiences, information and advice on this blog. I have learned quite a bit about current Church events, articles to read, books to read, topics of debate to think about, not to mention all that has come up about the Liturgy! All of this has brought me closer to Christ and I am truly thankful to you for all of that.
Comment by Laurinda (Austin,TX) — 27 May 2009 @ 3:47 pmDear Fr. Z: Awesome news! Congratulations Father. I was privileged to attend a 50th priestly anniversary 2 weeks ago and I will be going to another 50th priestly anniversary mid-June, both in Oakland, CA, both Dominican Friars (dogs of the Lord), both friends of a lifetime. I wish you the same faithfulness and longevity. Whenever I am asked who is my pastor, I answer, I have 2: Fr. CW and Fr. John Zuhlsdorf, but only Fr. Zuhlsdorf passes along useful culinary tips. Ad multos annos. I hope your red ink never runs dry.
