Both old and new

PENJING REPORT

Penjing has been outside and is doing very well.. lots of new growth.

"But Father! But Father!", some of you are saying… gesticulating at the screen.  "Wasn’t there another tree?  It had a funny name…  Did you … kill it?"

I am glad you asked.

You will recall that I had a Japanese Maple, Irohamomiji.  Last autumn, I was a little worried about this tree when all the leaves went nasty and dropped.  "Beh!", quoth I.  "It is a maple, after all."

During the whole of the long winter a friend made fun of me for diligently watering this twig.

Now… I can report that Irohamomiji’s little buds are finally moving and changing.  Some seem to be getting moist and a little sticky, The maple sap is running!

I don’t think I’ll tap it.

There is life after all.  Let this be a lesson to us all.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

In the meantime, a kind reader sent me a very nice addition.

This is a Chinese Elm, Ulmus parvifolia.

This is to be known as Penzai.

  1. Oh, hurray! Irohamomiji lives! May he grow well and prosper. :-)

  2. Maureen says:

    Irohamomiji
    Does not know Fiji
But he’s a very fine Japanese maple
Even without being tapped for a breakfast staple.

    This is so beautiful.
You have a gift – not only the gift of tending to these exceptional plants but also the gift of sharing and putting smiles on peoples faces.
Thank you and GOD bless, Mum26

…. ah, and when I see those amazing birds….. every morning when one of my six biological alarm clock wakes me at 5 (my children) I open my windows to hear the birds waking up singing GOD’s glory. In my dozing I participate spiritually.
    Thank you a GOD bless,
    Mum26

  5. Gerald says:

Your practice of giving names to your various plants is just too cute for words!

  6. Ella says:

    Yay a new tree!!
Father, your blog is always so interesting. I love the pictures and things I learn here :-)

  7. The maple that has lived in spite of your friends comments could be named Ironman! Even the harsh winter didn’t deter it!

  8. Joyce says:

    Gerald–

I’ve frequently thought the same thing myself. Personal names for plants–good grief!!!

  9. RichR says:

    FrZ,

Does Penjing travel well? I seem to remember him visiting Rome.

  10. Ricky Vines says:

“a bruised reed he will not break”

  11. Christian says:

Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains. You too must be patient. Make your hearts firm, because the coming of the Lord is at hand. Do not complain, brothers, about one another, that you may not be judged. Behold, the Judge is standing before the gates. Take as an example of hardship and patience, brothers, the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. Indeed we call blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of the perseverance of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, because “the Lord is compassionate and merciful.”
