PODCAzT 90: St. Leo on the beatitudes; the sacred, sacrilege and reparation

On this beautiful Saturday of the 22nd Week of Ordinary Time, Labor Day Weekend, I have spend inside laboring on another PODCAzT just for you listeners.

Today we hear from St. Pope Leo I, “the Great” (+461) in his Sermon 95, on the Beatitudes in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5).  From across the centuries Leo’s voice rings out about the root of the “happiness” expressed in the beatitudes, humility, which cuts across all classes of society and each person’s lot in life.  There are some wonderful images, such as “consecrated tears”.

I was inspired to do this audio project by the second reading in the Office of Readings in today’s Liturgia horarum, or Liturgy of the Hours, the “office”, which priests are obliged to recite.  It is always a pleasure to work with Leo.

I then ramble for quite a while the sacred and the profane.  We need to recover a sense of the sacred, and how it is different from the temporal sphere, dominated by the “Prince of this world”.  There are many acts of “sacrilege” occurring now.  I talk about what sacrilege is and then speak of reparation.

    Thank you, Father! In just a few weeks we’ll be naming our son after St. Leo the Great. It’s good to be reminded that among his saintly virtues he was also a great stylist. One more thing for us to imitate….

    This is one of your very best podcazts, and I’ve downloaded and listened to all 90 so far. Of course, Leo the Great’s always great, but your remarks about profaning the sacred, especially the liturgy and the Eucharist are ones that every Catholic and especially every priest and bishop ought to hear.

    For what it’s worth, I might mention that we’re dog-sitting a couple of poodles that had been paying no attention to the TV (football and Fox News), but when you started reading from Pope Leo, they came running in and one of them appeared to listen carefully — to the English translation at least, though he may have drifted off when you started reading the original Latin.

    Thanks for the PODCAzT Father! What you talked about seemed like a reminder of what Our Lady said at Fatima: the world needs to make reparation for sins.

    But Father! But Father! What if someone were to bust a priest in the chops, but there was no way to tell that he was a priest because he wasn’t wearing a Roman collar? Would the person still be guilty of the sin of sacrilege?
