US Postal Registrations are CLOSED; PAYPAL will be open until 11:59 on OCTOBER 5TH. Tickets may be purchased at the door for an added $5 fee. If you register online the cost is $25 for adults, 10 for students, and FREE for seminarians.
The 12th Call to Holiness Conference is taking place in metro Detroit on Saturday, October 10, 2009 at the Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak, Michigan. The conference theme for this year is: Treasures of the Mass.
Speakers: Bishop Athanasius Schneider of Karaganda, Kazakhstan (author of Dominus Est), Fr. John Zuhlsdorf (aka "Fr. Z" – What Does the Prayer Really Say?), Michael P. Foley (professor/author), Rev. Eduard Perrone (Pastor, Assumption Grotto in Detroit), and Dr. Ronald Prowse (Director of Music at Sacred Heart Major Seminary). John Vleko (Morally Responsible Investing) will MC the event.

Wish I could go!
I live directly across the river in Canada. This year’s theme is the first that has genuinely interested me enough combined with the fact that you are a speaker there that I, who really am not a conference crowds person, would brave it. However, that weekend is our Thanksgiving weekend and I will be four hours East. Sigh.
I’m looking forward to both the announcement of this conference and the coverage of it in the National Catholic Reporter.
An interesting note about Call to Holiness in Detroit: It was founded in response to a Call to Action conference which was being held in Detroit that year (can’t remember which year it was). This is the 12th conference, but they are not held yearly.
I am one of three photographers covering the event, so there will be photos on my blog after the fact, and I’ll definitely be sharing those with Fr. Z.
Many have been interested in Bishop Schneider’s book, Dominus Est. This is an opportunity to hear the bishop in person. When this man, who received his First Holy Communion in secrecy behind the Iron Curtain, talks about the Eucharist it makes you think about the ordinary things we take for granted. I don’t mean just the ability to go to Mass freely on a weekly or daily basis, but the ability to receive worthily, through Sacramental Confession. It’s rare to hear a priest, much less a bishop, talk about receiving worthily.
Myself, and many I know felt peacefully drawn to the Sacrament of Penance after hearing him talk about the Eucharist. And, there is a deep desire to spend time in Adoration.
I met and photographed Bishop Schneider when he came to Assumption Grotto last summer. He is a meek man, and one of great virtue and simplicity. My personal opinion is that this is no ordinary bishop. There is an air of holiness aobut him that is difficult to explain. You just have to sit and listen to him and you’ll see what I mean.
Please consider helping us to get the word out on this conference. It has been advertised locally on Ave Maria Radio and I believe in the Michigan Catholic. However, there has not been much of a web presence. Next time, I will work with the board to get some funds budgeted for web advertising. In the meanwhile, we are at the mercy of kind-hearted bloggers.
I did put it in the calendar at the New Liturgical Movement for October 10th about two months ago, but by the time October roles around to visibility on the front page, there will be few days left for people to enroll.

I will be on pilgrimage at that time but since the lectures may be available later, I can order them! So that is good.
I have DOMINUS EST from Archbishop Schneider and I highly recommend it! I heard him on EWTN and sought out the book. I have given copies to 3 priests as well. Bishop speaks of sacred liturgy and the need for reverence for the Holy Eucharist. He tells of how pious lay people kept the faith and devotion allive under communist demonic rule when the priests were murdered or exiled. This is something we all need to be well aware of; we cannot think this would never happen again.

I hope to make it to the conference too – I have a feeling there’s a family obligation that day, though. I’ll have to check with the Scheduling Czar (Mrs LarryD) before I can commit.
Ahhhh – finding time for a blognic in Detroit. Methinks Father will be tied up on Saturday after the conference with his brother priests. It all depends on Father Z’s travel schedule.
I don’t suppose Sunday afternoon after Masses would work, would it? Or is that commute time? It would be nice if Fr. Z could commute back on Monday!
I will have to check about what plans are being made for my time there. But, time permitting, I would be open to a blognic.
