PENJING REPORT and thanks… and coffee mug

First, some thanks are due.

Thank you to AS of NM for the cope of To Live: A Novel by Yu Hua

This was made into a very powerful movie by the great Chinese director Zhang Yimou, starring  Gong Li and You Ge.

If you want to have a sense of the something of the Great Leap Forward or the Cultural Revolution, you might try this film.  It is a compelling story of a family struggling to survive through a string of disasters.  It turns out that each disaster is contains the key to their survival.  If you don’t love this film, I will question if you have a pulse.

You can also get the novel in the original Chinese language in traditional (of course) characters.

In any event, it will be nice to read the book behind the movie.

PENJING REPORT

Penjing has gone and got all autumn on me.

Penjing is rapidly going yellow.  It happens.

Also, the other day my newest coffee mug arrived.

This is the large size WDTPRS cup.

I have been punishing these mugs, microwaving them for long periods and putting them in the bottom part of the dishwasher near the heating element.  They are holding up, though under this relentless hammering with heat, etc., they are showing some wear after a year or so.  If you don’t mistreat them as I purposely do, they should last for a long time!

If you are in the USA…

You can get the WDTPRS mug here.
You can get the Save The Liturgy mug here.
You can get the Say The Black mug here.

If you are in the UK…

You can get the WDTPRS mug here.
You can get the Save The Liturgy mug here.
You can get the Say The Black mug here.

If you are an Aussie …

You can get the WDTPRS mug here.
You can get the Save The Liturgy mug here.
You can get the Say The Black mug here.

I second Father’s recommendation of the movie. “To Live” is a wonderful movie, well worth the time. Netflix has it in their inventory. Gong Li is an amazing actress, I’ve loved her in every one of her movies that I’ve seen from “To Live” and “Breaking the Silence” to “Raise the Red Lantern” to “Curse of the Golden Flower” to “Shanghai Triad”.

As long as your credit card says you live in the US. :-(

I bought a used copy of “To Live” from Amazon because of Gong Li and Zhang Yimou. It is a wonderful, inspiring movie and one I would use to educate young people about what happens in an insanely politically correct society where nothing is true but what the state says is true. What happened in Red China can happen here. Marxism is pure evil. But people can and do survive and retain decency in spite of it. I am glad to have this movie in my collection. Readers may find it interesting that Zhang Yimou and Gong Li were forbidden to work together for a time because the Communist government took offense at the films they did together. After seeing “To Live” and “Raise the Red Lantern” – another great film, it is easy to see why.
