    The Feeder Feed

CATEGORY: The Feeder Feed — Fr. John Zuhlsdorf @ 5:13 pm

Between various bouts with the keyboard today, I took a few photos of the every busy birds at the feeder.

Lots of black and white these days.

Though other muted colors come around.

I am glad to see some House Finches back.  They were gone for a while, perhaps on that same cruise the Chickadees were on.  Not with Celebrity, I hope.

    poing!

Once in while I catch some bird just hanging out.

This Nuthatch, during a lull, just sat there, looking around for the longest time.

Similarly, I caught this woodpecker actually dozing upside down, pretty much motionless for a few minutes.

Like I said… just hanging around.

I feed the birds from your donations.

    1. Here in the SF Bay area we only seem to have the goldfinches, though I am still trying to identify them all. But they are very entertaining. A lot of the nyjer seed ends up on the ground, though, and other larger birds (not doves) eat the seed on the ground—-but not all of it. I hope it doesn’t germinate and sprout in my garden.

    2. Thanks so much for the lovely photos. We have blue jays, juncos and a few geese around. All the others left before the big Midwest storm.

    3. Even a motionless photo of a chickadee is enough to make me smile. I’m sure God created chickadees for that exact purpose: a moment of levity in every day.

The nuthatches are beautiful, by the way. I love the black, white and blue colours.

    4. It’s so funny the way the birds ‘hang out’ at the feeders.

‘All you feathered fowls, praise the Lord’....

It’s so cool how you get the birds to sit still for their closeups, Father Z!

    5. I love the Nuthatch. Is is me or is he the most formal looking bird at the feeder? He is one sharp-dressed bird.

    6. You must have some Dominican birds, Father!

I just bought some bird feeders and seed. I plan to put them out tomorrow between snow flurries. My neighbor has several feeders so I hope the birds won’t mind visiting my yard too.

    7. Father, I don’t know if if our birds got sidetracked at your feeder, but we had the lowest Christmas bird count ever (or for a very long time anyway). Maybe it was so cold they were all hunkered down and hiding so they couldn’t be counted.

I usually am going through bags of seed by now, but am still on the first one. No juncos, not even redpolls or pine siskins. My jay and woodpecker are MIA also. So I guess I’ll just have to watch your birds.

But my cats have to do without “bird TV” while I’m gone. Now that is just not right.
