Working on the road to NYC

CATEGORY: SESSIUNCULA — Fr. John Zuhlsdorf @ 10:48 am

Working on the road requires light gizmos! I can usually work from my phone. Now I am trying an old netbook someone recently gave me loaded with Ubuntu… which I still don’t really know how to use.

    UPDATE:

And after a hideous flight, into NYC.

Let’s hope all goes well for the ride into Manhattan at this time or day and after the snow.

    1. How do you like the netbook? I’ve heard mixed reviews, especially with the lighter power of the computers and the stripped down Windows Starter (which won’t be an issue for you).

    2. Nothing like a NYC cab-ride on unplowed streets for a little adventure.

    3. What version of Ubutnu are you running, Father? I would assume that it is Ubuntu Netbook.
If you have issues, check out the ubuntu forums. Everyone there is quite nice, and more than willing to help a novice!

    4. I hope you enjoy your stay. I do have a question. I attended with my wife ,this evening a concert at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. I live in CT. It was by Lionheart and featured English Medieval Christmas music. The music and the performance were excellent. However, I am not a Latin scholar but I noticed the group insisted on pronouncing the i in filium as a long i as eye (made it sound like phyllum or phylium) Question 1 Was ther some variation in the pronunciation in Medieval England? or are they just plain wrong or am I wrong? I thought it was feelioom or fil as in fill.
I would be curious to know. The concert was in front of the Baroque Christmas tree with the Neopolitan creche.
      It was otherwise wonderful.

    5. Safe trip to NYC, Father Z!

BTW-the picture of Holy Innocents’ Church is glorious! Wonderful painting over the high altar! Now that’s a setting for Midnight Mass!

    6. I think there is nothing more beautiful in the travel world than flying into NY. Of course, I grew up there and lived there most of my life, so to me, it means flying into home. But even so, coming in over Manhattan or even over LI and seeing the outline of NYC to the west is an unforgettable moment.

It was better when we had the Towers (although I hated their construction when I was a teenager, showing how dumb teenagers are), and I still have a faint retinal image of them…

    7. Linux (Ubuntu) is my second language. :-) Please email me if I can be of any help with the netbook.
