Women’s Curling Kudos

The woman of curling have resolved all the questions.

It came down to a nail-biter, last rock of the 11th end.

The moment of truth for Canada.

Disaster.

Congratulations to Sweden.

UPDATE 27 Feb 0448 GMT:

And as curling is winding down, we have some time for HOCKEY.

CANADA hangs by their collective teeth to beat SLOVAKIA.

I’ll bet you Canucks are breathing a bit more easily tonight!

Enjoy it while you can.

    Saw the 10th and 11th ends…awesome match!

  2. catholicmidwest says:

I’ve enjoyed the curling this time around too–it’s a new discovery for me. Also, the women play *so* much better than the men.

  3. Andy Lucy says:

One 1/4 inch and a hair light. I just KNEW they had it at the bottom of the 10th end… and boom. Not so much.

Here’s hoping the Canada v Norway men’s gold medal match will be as good.

  4. Thomas S says:

Helluva match. Can’t ask for a better finish.

I didn’t know who to root for at first, since I disdain the Norse countries for their nihilism and America Jr. for Celine Dion.

Once Canada choked and Sweden tied it up though I had to root for them to complete the improbable comeback. That 10th end was going nowhere for the Swedes, but they somehow pulled off a 2.

  5. chloesmom says:

Exciting match! Both teams played a terrific game, and tho as a Canadian I’m disappointed our women lost, the Swedes earned their gold. The way I look at it, it’s a major achievement to be able to compete in the Olympics, and any medal of any colour is something to be proud of. Bravo to all concerned!

  6. Maltese says:

I love the intense expressions when they send the stones; like I’ve said, it’s comparable to a look my wife has when I’m in trouble! But really, this is a cool sport, which is enormously popular right now…

  7. J Kusske says:

What a comeback! Props to Sweden–I hear they’re all one family too, so the expressions on their faces might be closer to your wife’s than you thought…

  8. Gabriella says:

Must say you’ve all introduced me to a new sport – am beginning to enjoy curling :)

  9. Penguins Fan says:

USA vs. Canada for the gold, Sunday, 3PM. Lat’s Go USA!

  10. Roland de Chanson says:

Sunday 3PM – NHL North vs NHL South. Go NHL!

Where’d the Soviet Army get to anyway?

  11. Glen M says:

It’s painful losing to socialists, but at least it wasn’t the Chinese. Tonight Canada gets a chance to beat the awful pants of Norway and on Sunday we’ll see if the Americans can must up another miracle on ice.

I have a fond childhood memory of losing a close hockey championship game. Later I asked my priest why we lost seeing as though I prayed for a win on the bench. He explained to me that the other team must have prayed harder.

  12. ljc says:

It was a disapointing result for us Canadians, especially since we had it wrapped up in the 10th then blew it. Regardless, the men will win tonight, completing their “sweep” of the competition, and then we will pick up another gold Sunday when we beat the US at hockey. Just for the record, while the US is dominating the overall medal count, Canada is leading the gold-medal count with 10. Go Canada!

  13. medievalist says:

Roland: The vaunted Soviet Army was beaten by the plucky Canucks 7-3.

The Slovaks really brought their game (and a nice archiepiscopal cross on their jerseys) whereas the USA seemed to have it quite easy against an aging Finland that just didn’t show up. Sunday should be interesting.

  14. chloesmom says:

    Let’s go, Canada!

  15. Roland de Chanson says:

medievalist: actually I was not too clear – I had meant the Soviet Army of yore. Of course those guys are NHL now too!

Come to think of it, it would be nice if the same oecumenical intercommunion that characterizes professional hockey would be adopted by the First and Third Romes. I’d be willing to wager a rouble or two that if Kirill and Benedict got together over a couple of steins of good Bavarian beer, the recondite theological abstrusities would dissolve away.

    Go NHL!

  16. Breck says:

I’m sure that the US team will really enjoy their silver medals in men’s hockey! You saw how cheerful the US women’s team was at the end of their game with Canada. When the shock wore off, the US women were gracious of course.

  17. Konichiwa says:

    Hi Father Z,
Have you seen the Simpsons’ 12th episode of season 21? It’s still up on the Fox website. It’s a curling episode check it out if you haven’t.
