A great new biography of St. Francis of Assisi by Fr. Augustine Thompson, OP, who posts here now and then. Learn about the saint after whom Pope Francis purposely chose his name.

Fr. Z’s KINDLE Wish List
-

You are at the Federal Triangle – Check out the National Aquarium in the basement of the Commerce Bldg (1401 Constitution). Cheap – $9
Hi Father. Please let me suggest “The Sacred Made Real” at the National Gallery of Art.From the Gallery’s website ” Arrestingly real sculptures and paintings of the saints, the Immaculate Conception, and the Passion of Christ are among some 20 Spanish masterpieces of the 17th century ” Also 2 of my boys, along with 60 school mates, are presently there on a field trip.
Welcome Father! Glad to see you made it in okay.
You should see the statue of “Isabella the Catholic” on 17th, just north of Constitution (near the Whitehouse and the Washington Monument).
Father, I had planned to be in DC this weekend for the Mass at the basilica, but unfortunatelly my plans did not work out. I will be watching on EWTN.
For a one of a kind dimsum experience you might want to try Ping Pong Restaurant located at 900 7th Street NW, in DC.
Looks like you lucked out on the nice weather in DC, Fr. Z!
Oh, how I wish I could be there at the Shrine for the Mass! I’ll have to content myself with watching it on EWTN on my computer.
I’ll keep my eyes peeled for you!
Father, another of my favorite restaurants in DC is Brasserie Beck (1101 K Street Northwest, DC). Great Belgian/French cuisine.
Eat like a presidents at the iconic Ben’s Chili Bowl directly across the street from the U Street/African American Civil War Memorial/Cardozo stop on the Green Line. When you get to the station, exit towards 13th street and we are across U Street from the escalators. Their signature dish is Bill Cosby’s Original Chili Half-Smoke – $5.20. It is kind of a hole in the wall so, FYI.
More on dining: I’ve heard good things from Chinese friends about Full Kee in Chinatown. I dined there once with great success, after Mass at Old St. Mary’s of course.
509 H Street, NW
Tel: (202) 371-2233
Except after 9-11, where “LIBERTY IS THE PRICE OF ETERNAL VIGILANCE.”
I concur with Marcin, Full Key has that authentic taste and is also open late night.
MONDAY – SUNDAY 11 :00 a.m. – 2 :00 a.m..
Tel: (202) 371.2233. (202) 371.2089. 509 H Street, N. W. Washington, D.C. 20001. Beer & Wine Available …
Just a thought – if you come across some of our favorite Catholic Democrats, can you give them some fresh apples from me – like penance for their dereliction of duty and other sins. If not that, then maybe a verbal lashing.
Don’t miss the Folger Shakespeare Library. It’s near the Capitol.

You read my mind, rakesvines. I was so going to post something like you did. Only I was going to say wave bye-bye to Nancy P. (I wish) and Mr. Reid.
But, seriously Father, enjoy your walk about and may all be blessed by their presence at the Holy Mass tomorrow. (And those who will join in via tv and internet.)
That statue at the National Archives is my favorite.
Up the street from Saint Mary’s in D.C. is a place called Matchbox (H street between 7th and 8th, NW). In addition to great pizza and sliders, it serves Chimay on tap. Ten bucks, but some of it goes to the Trappists in Belgium who brew it.
The Marine Corps Memorial (Iwo Jima) is overwhelming.
If you have wheels, the 1st Bull Run Battlefield is also worth a visit.
Oh, I so wanted to comment excitedly that I WAS INSIDE WHEN YOU TOOK THAT PICTURE. Then I looked at the time stamp. I *should* have been inside, but I was late today :-(
Welcome to DC!
> “The Sacred Made Real”
Let me second JG’s suggestion. Saw it in London a few months ago. It is a moving collection of this particularly `catholic, Spanish art form – and not too large (unlike the van Gogh at the Royal Academy)
best wishes for tomorrow TSC
