Request from Fr. Z: go now to thank Bp. Slattery

The Diocese of Tulsa has created a page with Bp. Slattery’s sermon and also a moderated combox for comments.  You don’t have to register.

May I request you readers to go over to that site, boost their stats in a way they have never seen, and leave positive comments of thanks to Bishop Slattery for what he did on Saturday and what he preached to the world?

We owe him sincere thanks for his participation and contribution.

Go now, please.  It’ll take but a moment to go there and thank Bp. Slattery.  Thanks with a promise of prayers!

I did as you asked. And I hope this will be an encouragement for other bishop to do as Bp. Slattery has done–offer a beautiful High Mass and preach an incredible homily. These were words I basically have only read in books. It is good to hear them preached. We need more than to be affirmed in our laziness and comfort; we need to be taught how to pray and how to journey on the road to holiness.

  2. becket1 says:

I sent a thanks, but I doubt he will read it.

  3. becket1 says:

Especially since there is a moderator screening the comments.

  4. Tina in Ashburn says:

Father, we may crash their server…LOL!

  5. Ralph says:

    Done.

What a homily! It’s one that lends itself to close study.

“If then someone asks of what we spoke today, tell them we spoke only of the truth. If someone asks why it is you came to this Mass, say that it was so that you could be obedient with Christ. If someone asks about the homily, tell them it was about a mystery and if someone asks what I said of the present situation, tell them only that we must – all of us – become saints through what we suffer.”

What can you say but WOW! Imagine what a world full of Bishops such as this could be?

    Awesome.

  6. DdC says:

Was first in line on Sat. Thks for this post, we always need to remember to thak our priests when something is done well. It is so easy just to criticize ther mistakes, but a thank you goes a long way.

  7. DdC says:

sorry for the typos, I’m really a pen & paper girl…

  8. May I suggest that we also use the opportunity to offer a very large spiritual bouquet in that same combox?

  9. Tina in Ashburn says:

I posted my comment awhile ago, still nothing. I think we broke the Internet.

re: Tine – “I posted my comment awhile ago, still nothing. I think we broke the Internet.”

Don’t hold your breath waiting. I posted something yesterday morning and it still hasn’t shown up.

  14. Mike says:

The Crisis in the Church, it seems to me, will not be behind us until we have guys like +Slattery all over the place, in parishes in anytown, USA.

We really need to pray for Holy Shepherds!!!

  15. TNCath says:

    Gladly done.

I bet the phone lines and e-mail accounts amongst the U.S. Bishops are humming about what happened in Washington last Saturday.

I wonder if and when the USCCB might celebrate a Mass in the Extraordinary Form at one of their general meetings? Hahaha!

  16. My comment:

Your Excellency, I am so grateful to you for offering the Pontifical High Mass at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. You not only made a beautiful Mass possible; with your inspired sermon, you taught us how to make sure that every Mass we attend for the rest of our lives is beautiful. You taught us to transform our suffering through obedience, and to bring it all to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, to unite it with Our Lord’s own suffering. Thank you for bringing us Christ.

  17. wanda says:

    Done.

Tina in Ashburn: “I posted my comment awhile ago, still nothing. I think we broke the Internet.”

There are no comments posted under the last 20 (possibly more but that’s all I checked) news stories there.

  20. it’s done father….

but hey, none of the comments has showed up yet :D :D :D

  21. They are aware now that comments are coming in. I suspect they just have not had to deal with comments before – LOL.

    Give them some time.

  22. Mitchell NY says:

Was happy to do so…Hope he talks with fellow Bishops about what a good turnout it was and how he feels doing this form of Mass. One thing for sure, he has alot of support amongst the Faithful and from many who can not vocally correspond or have internet to write a note of Thanks. I mentioned it to a co-worker and her response was “Wish that Bishop were here”.

  23. nemo says:

“For those whose lives are centered in Christ, obedience is that movement which the heart makes when it leaps in joy having once discovered the truth.”

    Amazing!

  24. Done! Still there are no comments appearing. I have always admired that Bishop!

  25. xsosdid says:

Stunningly profound homily. I left a comment.

  26. xsosdid says:

“The mystery then, of which we speak, is the light that shines in the darkness, Christ Our Lord, Who reveals Himself most wondrously to those who suffer so that suffering and death can do nothing more than bring us to the mercy of the Father”

This is an apostolic letter to you and I from Jesus! I absolutely love this! Read this entire homily, spend time with it. It is understated and just brilliant.

    God is with us.

  27. TomB says:

They have the comments posted now. There are many thoughtful messages there.

  28. sanctus3 says:

Joyfully done. The offering of this Mass was a glorious milestone in our Catholic faith and history.

Just a suggestion to everyone: Send a note of appreciation to others who were responsible for making this happen. You can find a list of credits at the end of the video, or perhaps you can get in touch with EWTN for a list.

  29. Please consider sending that link at the Diocese of Tulsa to your favorite Catholic news outlet. This is still contained in the blogoshere.

  30. irishgirl says:

Just sent my ‘thanks’ to His Excellency, Father Z!

A lady from Michigan who went to the ‘Call to Holiness’ conference you did last fall is going to send me a copy of the Mass on DVD for me. I don’t have EWTN except when I go online at the library or another place that has Wi-Fi. So maybe I should send EWTN a message of thanks, too, as a couple of the above commentors have mentioned.

  31. AnAmericanMother says:

irishgirl, if you find out where the DVDs come from, post it here. I watched it live, and I still want one!

  32. Jim of Bowie says:

According to the Paulus Institute, there will be a DVD of the mass. They just don’t know when it will be.

  33. JayneK says:

I received a lovely email thanking me for my comment. It was probably a form letter, but still heart-warming.

  34. Andrew says:

    Well, guess what happened.

I followed Fr Z’s request that we do what we can to thank Bishop Slattery for his celebration of the Pontifical Mass and his marvelous sermon at the National Shrine in DC, and I get a reply from him!

I hope I am not being prideful in sharing this with you all, as this is where we all got the idea from. Perhaps it was just a form letter he sent to everybody. But I was most gratified to receive this, and I’m from Australia!

Celebrating Mass at the National Shrine on Saturday was a moment of grace for me, as it was – evidently – for many Catholics throughout the nation.

Thank you, Andrew, for you kind words which I read and found most encouraging. I am grateful that you took the time to express your thoughts so well.

Please continue to pray for me, for our Holy Father, Pope Benedict, and for the whole Church that this period of suffering be for all of us a time of purification that leads to holiness. Know that I will be praying for you and those whom you love, May God bless you that you might always walk in the footsteps of His Son.

    Sincerely yours in Christ,

    Bishop Edward J. Slattery
    Bishop of Tulsa

  35. sawdustmick says:

I received an email this morning aswell. One paragraph referring more “closely to home” for me.

    Deo Gratias.

  36. Jack007 says:

The good bishop is not only that, he is also no less, a true gentleman!
Seriously now, how common is THAT in today’s world?
Form letter or not, I’m sure all of us appreciate the GESTURE!

I pray everyday specifically for my local bishops, Naumann and Finn. I must add this gentle and TRUE shepherd.

Fr. Z, a personal note of thanks to you, as without your forum, I would never have known where to express my thanks. Watch your back! When you’re as effective as you are, the Evil One targets you.
Another “coffee donation” incoming to help you continue the Lord’s work.

  37. Cath says:

Jack in KC, I love bishops Finn and Naumann (Archbishop Naumann is my sheperd). I thought of Archbishop Naumann while listening to the podcast of Bishop Slattery’s sermon. Their voices sounds similar. God has blessed the middle of this country with some great bishops!

  38. Jack007 says:

God has blessed the middle of this country with some great bishops!

Soon, I fear we are going to have to share them. There are many faithful who are literally languishing. We need to also pray that their replacements will follow their lead!
    I’m at Blessed Sacrament, BTW.

    Jack in KC

  39. irishgirl says:

I got a thank-you email from Bishop Slattery, too! It was on the same lines as Andrew from Australia’s!

AnAmericanMother-I went on the EWTN “Religious Catalogue’ and noticed it had several DVDs of past EF Masses that have been done at the Shrine of the Blessed Sacrament in Hanceville, Alabama. So they might have one of the Mass from the National Shrine. The one I’m going to get from my friend is for my own private use. But I’ll look from time to time on EWTN’s site if they will have one available.

Left a comment over there just now under my real name.

    Better late than ever!

    Praise be to God! :)

  41. doanli says:

This is an old film with Archbishop Fulton Sheen doing the commentary, but this is the first time I had ever seen the Solemn High Mass (Tridentine). My grandparents had the video. I’ve been in love with it ever since, though I strayed from the Church for over 20 years. (But I’m back, thank the Lord and His Blessed Mother!)
