“He [Satan] will set up a counter-Church which will be the ape of the Church because, he the devil, is the ape of God. It will have all the notes and characteristics of the Church, but in reverse and emptied of its divine content. It will be a mystical body of the anti-Christ that will in all externals resemble the mystical body of Christ. In desperate need for God, whom he nevertheless refuses to adore, modern man in his loneliness and frustration will hunger more and more for membership in a community that will give him enlargement of purpose, but at the cost of losing himself in some vague collectivity.”
“Who is going to save our Church? Not our bishops, not our priests and religious. It is up to you, the people. You have the minds, the eyes, and the ears to save the Church. Your mission is to see that your priests act like priests, your bishops act like bishops.”
- Fulton Sheen

"But if, in any layman who is indeed imbued with literature, ignorance of the Latin language, which we can truly call the 'catholic' language, indicates a certain sluggishness in his love toward the Church, how much more fitting it is that each and every cleric should be adequately practiced and skilled in that language!" - Pius XI
"Let us realize that this remark of Cicero (Brutus 37, 140) can be in a certain way referred to [young lay people]: 'It is not so much a matter of distinction to know Latin as it is disgraceful not to know it.'" - St. John Paul II
Grant unto thy Church, we beseech Thee, O merciful God, that She, being gathered together by the Holy Ghost, may be in no wise troubled by attack from her foes. O God, who by sin art offended and by penance pacified, mercifully regard the prayers of Thy people making supplication unto Thee, and turn away the scourges of Thine anger which we deserve for our sins. Almighty and Everlasting God, in whose Hand are the power and the government of every realm: look down upon and help the Christian people that the heathen nations who trust in the fierceness of their own might may be crushed by the power of thine Arm. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. R. Amen.

Okay, now I feel better.
Cliquot is the name of nearby village… down on route-109. It’s part of the misquito infested swamp that feeds the Charles River.
Enjoy the vino.
So important was it to come over right away after Mass that he even neglected to change out of his vestments!
Politely, could someone please explain the connection between Universae Ecclesiae and this particular brand of champagne? Or am I reading too much into this post, and Cliquot just happens to be Fr. Z’s favorite brand?
You are SUCH a riot. Best, edp.
I must say that while my experience with Champagne is limited, that there is no comparison between Veuve Cliquot Ponsardin and such contenders for the title as Dom Perignon.
Or, to quote the antient dude from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
You have chosen wisely.
Father Z.! I had no idea. LOL!
Nice work from Vincenzo, I’ve missed his entries.
Father –
Mr. Claret and I just happen to have a bottle in the fridge. Now we have an excuse to celebrate!
I must also let you know how much we enjoy our Mystic Monk coffee every morning! We have some while we read the Daily Office Lectionary and pray Morning Prayer (Anglican Use). (And watch the birds out our bedroom window.) The Pascha Java is really, really fab. And so is the Midnight Vigils. Thank you for promoting their coffee. It’s way better than the coffee from that store which used to/possibly still does support Planned Parenthood.
In addition to the Feast of our Lady of Fatima and the release of Universae Ecclesiae, Friday also is the day of my wife’s first mammogram since her mastectomy 15 months ago. Good results on that will make the perfect hat trick and even more of a reason to chill the Widow!
I don’t think that the champagne, even a Veuve Cliquot-Ponsardin is authorized to celebrate mass by the Vatican’s hierarchy. But in the case there is no other wine easily available, why not?
Possibly… according to the “spirit of the council” some priests already use it daily?
Might I ask, way is Holy Father reading the missal upside down?
I will likely just be leaving morning mass here on the east coast at noon in Rome, if my memory serves me, but I may have to make an exception and have a mimosa or something.
bmccoy: The Holy Father is waving. He is not reading the Missal. The person on the other side of the table is reading the Missal.
*why not way. Sorry about that.
Of, course. I don’t know why that hadn’t occurred to me.
“The person on the other side of the table is reading the Missal.”
In Latin, no less…but glass chalices? Really? Come on.
Centristian: Just as not all rectangles are squares, not all celebrations are Masses.
I assure you that the glassware is neither Murano nor has it ever been used for Mass. For celebrations, yes. Mass no.
“Centristian: Just as not all rectangles are squares, not all celebrations are Masses.”
I suppose you’ll tell me, next, that not all tables are altars. Well, at least they’re using an ombrellino; that’s a mercy, anyhow.
I’d enjoy Veuve Clicquot or Mystic Monk coffee for a celebration, but from what I’ve seen online lately, the Holy Father would be more likely to be sipping a glass of Orange Fanta.
In answer to the unasked question “Don’t you want a Fanta?” I must say I’d rather go for a glass of the Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin. Sometimes I miss those days of working in restaurants, when we got magnums of the stuff on New Year’s Eve just for showing up.
Fanta is fine, but Cliquot is quicker.
Should the Holy Father show up here on Friday, I will offer him Fanta, though I suspect he would have a glass of the Veuve.
Works for me (my favorite champagne)!
hmm. Even after having perused the comments, no comprende. I did laugh, and out loud even, at Fr Z’s response about the (not) upside down Missal.
Then I re-read the comments and looked at the picture again. Still nothin’.
So, Fr Z:
In addition to the many tremendous categories you have, I would like to respectfully request a new one. The ‘Let Me Spell It Out For You!’ category. Just in case those of us in your once-a- week-check-the-blog online flock have NO idea what the joke is, but want to.
And Father, this new category could take a serious note when needed and enlighten those clergy (for whom I pray) unclear about, oh lets say- obedience to the Holy Father. For example.
Anyway, please excuse me. I’m going to pet my cat and grab an Orange Fanta before I continue reading.
At various occasions in the past (most memorably, before the release of Summorum Pontificum), Fr. Z has demonstrated through pictures that he has champagne (and Veuve Clicquot at that) in his possession and chilled, ready for celebration. These pictures continue the tradition. (And Veuve is called that because a widow lady owned the company.)
Poor St. Servatius gets no love these days, except in Maastricht. But you know, it may well be that Papa Benedict is thinking about his childhood here. May 13 was the last of the “ice saints” or “ice kings” in Bavaria. No more snow and frost, come May 13.
So may the Veuve be the only thing left that’s chilly!
I miss seeing Vincenzo’s work! I love that picture of the Holy Father ‘sitting’ at your table, Father Z!
So, is the Instruction coming out tomorrow, I would venture to guess? Is that why you are saying, ‘break out the Widow’? [sorry, I’m not much of a wine expert-a strict teetotaler am I!]
Funny that Fanta is preferred. We once had a lovely young lady from Hungary babysit when I had to work some evenings at a masters’ program for teachers. My son then a toddler had a Babar the Elephant, a small one, attired in his usual green suit with bow tie. Babar is a family favorite. I noticed that he would call the Babar, not Babar, as we did but “Fanta”…And I realized that this must have been the delightful suggestion of his sitter who was fluent in different languages. Anyway Fanta is relegated to a little niche now as he no longer receives the lavishing of love and affection of that age. But Fanta’s adventures (aka Babar) stay with us….
I’ll be ready to celebrate tomorrow with the Holy Father (I’ve had a bottle of Veuve Clicquot in the fridge since Christmas), although he’s thousands of miles away and will probably raise a toast with Fanta!
