I have good news and bad news about the blog!

The blog was down for a while tonight.  The culprit was my access log that had maxed the allotted space on the server.

In one year almost to the day my access log was 136GB.  136GB!  That meant that another piece of the puzzle didn’t have room to do its job, and that is why the blog went down.

This was, in a sense, good news.  It means that the traffic here is, in the word used by the guy who helped fix this, “impressive”.

We are installing some bells and whistles which will allow me to get some alerts so we can stay ahead of the space issues on the server.

Thanks for the patience!

Whew, glad you’re back, Fr. Z. For a while I was getting a message that said something like I didn’t have permission to access your site from my server. I thought I had been bad, or something!
It is heartening to know that lots of people are your followers. Keep fighting the good fight!

    @wanda
Yes, I too was also getting at times the “forbidden ” page.

Can anyone think of another example of a problem such that merely reading about it at the most authoritative source contributes to the problem?

So glad to see you back, Father! I too was scouring my memory to see if I might have said something that got me banned. :-)

See if you can get it so next time the blog goes down there can be like a default message along the lines of, “WDTPRS is currently unavailable — go to confession”

Lol! I had actually just went to Confession when I discovered the blog was down.

A good thing I live in Europe and wasn’t awake when the thing was down, at ‘not permission to access’ I would have thought I was banned for excessive flippancy or something!

  8. Years ago, I was in charge of multiple large computers. I set up a system so that when something critical happened, even at 3 o’clock in the morning, it would send me a text message so that I would be the first to know and could get things up and running again. Better to be proactive rather than have an irate production manager at one of the factories call me up hours later with his production lines down.

Among other things, it sent a critical error message if a hard drive was nearly exhausted.

But to be useful, this system must only send important messages, things that require immediate attention at all hours of day and night, otherwise I would be tempted to ignore them. This sort of thing is easy to implement on UNIX systems, but is a bit more complicated for Windows machines.

When the blog is down, you might put up the message:

“WDTPRS is down … go to confession and/or do penance.”

Confession isn’t always available when the blog is down. :-)

The alternate message is a great idea, but may be beyond your ability to control. The message which did appear smacks of “geek” thought with regard to clarity. And I say that with all humility, as a geek myself.

I wasn’t online at all yesterday, so I didn’t get any message that the blog was down, Father Z!
Having no trouble accessing it today, either, except that it seems to taking a little while longer to fully show on my iBook screen!
