Blog maintenance soon – UPDATE

It is possible, even probable, that we will be doing some maintenance on the software that powers the blog.

If there are any interruptions or bumps along the way, that’s why.

UPDATE 8 March 1654 GMT:

The software that powers the blog and some of the plugins have been updated.  That’s why some blank screens were coming up for a while.

The next step is to migrate the whole shootin’ match to different server.

There are still some updates to be done, but the major work is finished for now.

Thank God. Your website is so clunky with all of the extra side-bar stuff, and my internet isn’t exactly bad or anything.

[Thanks for your kind words of support.]

    Clunky? Ouch!!

Fr. Z said maintenance, not redesign….

  3. Will D. says:

Oh, some redesigning wouldn’t go amiss. Using Adblock Pro, I put the hamster and the dog to sleep a couple of months ago, and the blog is much, much quicker to load. Nor does Firefox peg my CPU when the page is displayed.

  4. pm125 says:

I’m thinking some readers like the blog as is or why be here?

  5. mike cliffson says:

    Keep dog and hamster!

I find that the site is slow and sometimes just freezes on my desktop and laptop, running either Firefox or Chrome. But it is great running Firefox for Android on my new tablet, an ASUS Transformer 101. Unfortunately, FF for Android doesn’t have a video plug-in, so I have to switch to the bundled browser or the YouTube player. I don’t use the bundled browser all the time because for this site alone it won’t give me the whole page, just a sort of capsule for each blog item that can be expanded and nothing of the sidebar.

I don’t know whether the planned maintenance will affect any of this, but I like the design just fine. Thanks, Fr. Z!

Loading the main page is a noticeable strain on the memory, but then again, I’m running Vista, so my computer is already like that motor oil commercial with the car dragging a piano behind it, so I’m slower to fault any given website for my computer’s difficulty handling it.

Until I can upgrade operating systems, and for anyone else who is having similar trouble, I’ve found Chrome to be a much more nimble browser, less prone than Firefox to reaching a saturation point on memory and throwing in the towel.

  8. Wow, brutal crowd here today, Father? Your blog is absolutely fantastic, I wouldn’t change a thing.

  9. oakdiocesegirl says:

Will D: You killed Basil? For shame! I like Basil & Yellow Dog [used to have a yellow dog]. What’s Yellow Dog’s name?
[the 1st time I tried to post this, it previewed, then disappeared]

  10. HyacinthClare says:

Basil’s still here, oakdiocesegirl … at least on Firefox… I feed him nearly every. Father, could you add a cat? Tell these old gripers to get some RAM or a life or something. And I LOVE this blog. I put every other blog in a folder called Lent and am not reading them , but I couldn’t do it to this one.

  11. HyacinthClare says:

    every DAY… duh

  12. Will D. says:

oakdiocesegirl: I liked ‘em too, until I started wondering why, when I loaded this site, the fan on my CPU started spooling up like a 747 revving its engines for takeoff. There’s some flaw in the flash code in those widgets, I guess, because when I blocked them, the CPU fan resumed its more sedate whirring.
NoTambourines: You’re right, Chrome seems to have a much more efficient memory manager. Having said that, the most recent version of Firefox is much improved over its predecessors. I’m running 10.0.2.

    Wow, that was affirming.

Am running an old Dell Dimension 8400 running XP SP3 and laboring under the burden of 87 (yes 87) processes including the ultimate resource hog WD SmareWare with WD Quick View and WDTPRS runs fine. It loads about as fast as anything else.

I would agree that the embedded video of the priests talk on the HHS issue was blank, but the reason for that has already been made clear.

I don’t have any technical issues with the site except it does crash my BlackBerry browser, but I use Opera anyway and it works just fine.

OOOPS: Maybe I spoke too soon. I just receive a strange error message: “You are posting too quickly. Please slow down.” (This is not a joke, I really did receive that message!)

  14. Posting too quickly?

Is this in relation to the admonition “Think before posting?”

Just checked with the Pingdom Speed Test tool, and the performance grade for this blog is 70/100 with a load time of 5.96 seconds. It could be better, but that’s not bad! I have never experienced any problems on my PC. I use Chrome. Firefox used to be decent, but became incredibly clunky. It can be a bit slow to load completely on my iPad when a post has garnered a lot of comments, but it’s worth the wait.

I think it’s wonderful that a traditional, holy priest has embraced internet technology and social media the way Father Z has! He is reaching a vast audience with a good message and doing a great service for God.

Father, I know you have people who help you out with your site, but if you ever need further assistance feel free to email me anytime–I have experience with WordPress coding and optimization, and graphic design. [Do you have a site or a portfolio?]

  16. I worked out a bug in my contact forms on the top menu. They should work now.

  17. acardnal says:

I use Mozilla Firefox browser Version 10.0.2 and have no issues with WDTPRS. I also use the ad blocker application that Fr.Z uses and it does the job! FYI, I have a computer with an Intel Core i3 processor and Windows 7 OS.

    Father,

My own blog is at http://www.jenspends.com (I don’t link to it in my profile here only because it’s not in any way related to Catholicism). Another WordPress example is http://www.emilyrosecole.com which I designed for a friend. Unfortunately I don’t have a professional portfolio website together yet, but I plan to in the future.
