When the Global Killer Asteroid arrives, let’s do better than the Great Successor!

How are we going to get Bruce Willis up to 2011 AG5, that killer asteroid that’s heading our way?!?

Don’t ask North Korea’s Great Successor Kim Jong-un!

Whatever their next act is, Ladies and Gents, it’ll be a blast too.

I think I’ll watch a movie tonight.

UPDATE 13 April 0250 GMT:

Okay, I watched a movie and I regret watching it in the evening.

Do not watch Contagion before you go to bed.

And it is definitely NOT a good airplane movie.

I may have to watch some Lucille Ball episodes to get that TEOTWAWKI stuff out of my head or it is going to be a looong night..

Funny you should mention this… I just got done watching an old TV movie called “The Savage Bees” on You Tube. I remember seeing this as a kid and being totally creeped out by it. It was about killer bees invading New Orleans during Mardi Gras and even though it’s decidedly low-tech by today’s special effects standards, it’s STILL pretty creepy. Even 35 years later, and despite the fact that the threat of killer bees seems to be residing in the “where are they now” file along with Y2K and the threat of another ice age, I kind of regret having watched it late at night!

We watched Contagion because it was assigned for my daughter’s Microbiology class. It would have been OK, but In had just finished reading “The American Plague” about yellow fever. While both are good, I certainly don’t recommend them in combination!

Speaking of Global Killer Asteroids and TEOTWAWKI, the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center is predicting a “life threatening”, violent tornado outbreak tomorrow (Saturday) centered on, but not limited to, central Oklahoma and central Kansas. Areas at risk include Oklahoma City, Wichita, Kansas City and Omaha. Visit the Storm Prediction Center website (spc.noaa.gov) for more details. As a weather geek of sorts who checks this website almost daily, I can tell you they don’t issue predictions this dire very often. The last time they did was last April 27, the day of the “super outbreak” that killed over 300 people in Alabama, Mississippi and other states.

Although there are certain… ahem… institutions in KC and Wichita that some of you might LIKE to see get hit, I think we should pray earnestly for the safety of all in the path… and if YOU are in the path, plan NOW for what you will do in case of a warning, if you haven’t already done so.

I confess, I have watched “I Love Lucy” every night before I go to sleep, for YEARS. I have the whole series, and I bet I could say most of it verbatim. If I want temporary peace, I have to go back to the 1950’s. I really do LOVE Lucy! (and Ricky)
I cannot again watch the original “Night of the Living Dead” movie. Aaauuggghhhhh!
Exorcist? Forget about it. I’m still trying to gear up for “The Exorcism of Emily Rose”. It has good reviews from Catholic sites. But at night? Never, unless I want to create my own horror movies in my head.
Hey thank God for these weather places that can warn people beforehand. Please Jesus and Mary, take care of the people and animals in the path of storms this Friday and weekend.

Yellow Fever, together with “the Great Tide” (probably a hurricane with a huge storm surge), wiped out the first version of my hometown. Old Saint Joseph was the where the first Florida constitution was signed, but it was completely wiped out by those two disasters. Later, Port St. Joe was built on the same spot.

Thanks for the reminder that I can see Contagion on DVD. We have greatly reduced our spending in order to afford to travel to TLM weekly. This means more time at home in our lovely rural community. It is nice to have a movie now and then. :)

Wow- Nd thanks to the rest of you for the heads up! I knew we were having rain this weekend zzz missed the memo on the threat until now! Guess I’ll stop reading Fr Z and go get some provisions.

Oh, nothing seems ‘normal’. Those weather forecasts, the movies, TV, news, people . It’s been dry and windy here all spring, winter, and fall since a Halloween snow/ice broke trees and habitat. Waiting for rain that can’t seem to touch the ground, yesterday noon a hailstorm instead which the wind and sun dried up in an hour. Seems like the area is being transformed slowly into a desert – a Robin Cook story in very slow motion. The rest of the country has had and is having its trials. The rest of the world, actually. My little escapes are b & w 40’s movies, Perry Mason, EWTN, or the mute and off buttons, as well as watering things and keeping the birdbath clean.

Wanted to post this this morning but forgot… here is a prayer against storms (tornadoes):

God our Father, Creator of the Universe and Lord over all creation, we humbly stand before you as your children in thanksgiving for your loving care and protection. We ask that you keep us safe from all tornadoes which may threaten us in the coming season. Protect us from all fear and anxiety of storms and give us an ardent trust and hope in Your love and mercy. You alone bring peace, calm and safety. Father, we thank you in advance, for you are our only Refuge. We ask this through Jesus Christ Your Son, Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

  13. PostCatholic: I get a lot of what they are talking about over at XKCD, but I don’t quite get that one!

Ah. You’ve never read Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. It’s one of the most famous works of 20th century literature, written in imitation of a children’s book but very much a tale for adults. Here’s a link to its Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Little_Prince

I commend it to you. Saint-Exupéry was something of an accidental theologian and his insights into human nature are often quite piercing.
