ActonU UPDATE. Thursday

The day began with a TLM (both the Ordinary and Extraordinary Form are available daily to participants) and then breakfast with some of the Acton folks.

The first session today was on Orthodoxy and the State. We are in a break now. Soon Michael Novak will talk about American Exceptionalism.

Tonight after supper talk by Eric Metaxas and the undersigned has been asked to do the invocation.

More later.

UPDATE:

The afternoon session continues with a talk on Benedict XVI and Caritas in veritate and then Theologians v. Capitalism.

During the break after lunch we had a screening of an episode of a new series called Poverty Cure. Splendid.

UPDATE:

Right now we are in Theologians v. Capitalism and, thinking about Milbank. What on earth is a “heterogenesis of ends”?

UPDATE:

I did the invocation tonight, which was a great honor. Now we have as our speaker Eric Metaxas, on Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

The great Diogenes (may God rest his soul) had a piece on speech/prayers that I have always loved:

Nota bene: This is not a prayer. Prayer is addressed to God, and this little speech (except in a purely formal sense) is not. It is serial posturing intended, like the successive poses of a fashion model on a catwalk, to show off the virtues of the manufacturer to their best advantage. Though grammatically camouflaged as an entreaty, this pseudo-prayer is performed not to be heard but to be overheard — primarily by the viewing audience and the op-ed writers.

Sounds fantastic, Fr. Z. What wonderful company to be amongst. I’m so thrilled that you are a part of it all. I look forward to hearing all about your experiences. Enjoy!

What percentage of participants went to the Ordinary Form and what percentage to the Extraordinary Form?

What smorgasbord! Who is giving the presentation on Orthodoxy and the State?

Just curious – who were you aiming that quote at? It didn’t come out of nowhere.

Congratulations to Fr. Z.! Metaxas is getting a lot of attention right now, even from the MSM. (I think the President was photographed holding up a copy of the Metaxas book on Bonhoeffer; my opinion of that photo-op, I will withhold.) It would be great to see a transcript of the invocation, or a video, if possible.
