A reader sent me this amusing graphic. I was reminded of two things. First, years ago in Rome there was a common wall-scrawl from the spray-painting vandals: CLORO AL CLERO. I was also reminded of the facetious post I made about the nuns protesting the jailing of the Holy Father’s document leaking butler, whom they likened to Daniel Elsberg.

I think it was Cardinal Newman who said about the laity: we’d look pretty silly without them. I think the reverse is equally true.

Or was it cleverly made to be satire at the expense of these ‘protestors’?
I don’t usually think in these terms, but I think they’d find that the (unionized) state police who stood aside in Wisconsin are one thing, and the Swiss Guard quite another….
Their facebook page has more than 11,000 followers. Reading it made me want to vomit.

I may be less bothered by their existence than by the quiet subversion which has been and continues to be practiced by parish level catechists and liturgists.
11,000 followers, most of whom have nothing to do with the Church one way or the other.
How do I know? Because whenever you hear about movements and associations that call themselves Catholic while attempting to undermine the Church, those that break out into the five digits are rare, and I doubt that some random “occupy” movement is going to suddenly be among the biggest of them without leeching off a bunch of other occupiers just going with the flow of protest. In short, it’s a safe estimate.
Anyway: There’s Occupy Atlanta, Occupy Cincinnati and maybe (if it really isn’t some sort of gag) Occupy the Vatican… but no Occupy New York. Only Occupy Wall Street. New York’s new name must be Wall Street, right? Yeah, about that’s the only thing I’ve ever had worth saying for myself about the Occupy movement(s).
