LENTCAzT 23 Thursday 3rd Week of Lent – many live in conflict with themselves

Today is Thursday of the 3rd Week of Lent.

We hear about the ancient Roman Station church, the fascinating Sts. Cosmas and Damian by the Roman Forum, the Collects in both forms of the Roman Rite (the older form mentions the station saints!), and then have something from Benedict XVI and John Cassian.

From Joseph Ratzinger:

There are many persons who live in conflict with themselves. This aversion for oneself, this inability to accept oneself and to be reconciled with oneself is far removed from the self-abnegation that the Lord asks of us. If we fail to love ourselves, we cannot love our neighbor.

The Ratzinger quote about living in conflict with oneself is very interesting! I’m not able to listen to this…where can I read more in context? Is it in one of his books? Thank you.

  2. StWinefride says:

“So it is that tears shed obtain the cleansing of sins” reminds me of the Jewish Proverb:

“what soap is for the body, tears are for the soul”.

The passage from our beloved Pope Emeritus is interesting however I expected him to go on to suggest that we look at “why” we live in conflict with ourselves. What is at the root of this conflict? Our Lord also desires our healing and when we are healed we are in a much better position to love ourselves, others and Our Lord.

Wilt thou be made whole?” He asks the invalid at the pool of Bethesda (John 5:6)

Perhaps, Father, our beloved Pope Emeritus does go on to speak about this! You have quoted several passages from this book in the past and I see that the English translation “To Look on Christ” is only available second-hand and at high prices. :(

What was the source of that Ratzinger quote? My German is not what it should be….

  4. Auf Christus schauen… in English as To Look on Christ.

  5. NBW says:

This was a very profound and moving passage from Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.

    Thank you Fr. Z.

Some deep stuff today, I had to listen to it several times. Egoism = self-esteem movement of today.
    Mille grazie per questi podcasts.

That quote from the Pope Emeritus is so healing for me. I wrote it down to keep, but I have one question, did he say “one’s own inner strife” or should it be “strength”? Thank you again!

  8. Mariana says:

    Thank you, Father!
