I call it “creeping incrementalism”.
Liberals will state or propose something outrageous. There is an outcry against it. They back done. They wait for awhile. They do it again. There is an outcry, but the outcry isn’t quite as loud. They back down again. Meanwhile, a few people are either now onside or they cease to care. They push it again. There is an outcry. They back down. Etc.
After a while they get their way. And the people who saw the evil of what was being pushed are called extremists.
That is how liberals get things done. They are persistent. They put aside small differences. They work together to break down the existing mores and relentlessly push their agenda.
An example of this came up on the website of the Archdiocese for Military Services of these US of A. I support the AMS and have a link to them on the sidebar here so that you can support them too.
I saw, HERE, an alarming statement:

Concern raised by brief citing Catholicism as example of “religious extremism”WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Archdiocese for the Military Services (AMS) issued the following statement today on the mischaracterization of “Catholicism” as an example of “religious extremism” on slide #24 of this U.S. Army Reserve training brief:StatementThe Archdiocese for the Military Services and Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty recently became aware of a U.S. Army Reserve Equal Opportunity training brief that expressly listed “Catholicism,” “Evangelical Christianity” and other religious groups as examples of “religious extremism” alongside groups such as “Al Qaeda”, “Hamas” and the “KKK.”
The Archdiocese is astounded that Catholics were listed alongside groups that are, by their very mission and nature, violent and extremist.
According to an investigation and reply from the Army Chief of Chaplains office, the training in question appears to have been an isolated incident not condoned by the Department of the Army. The Archdiocese and the Chaplain Alliance explained that the Army can and should take steps to prevent such incidents in the future.
The Archdiocese calls upon the Department of Defense [the Obama Administration] to review these materials and to ensure that tax-payer funds are never again used to present blatantly anti-religious material to the men and women in uniform.
This is how they work.
And let’s not forget that the Obama Administration is undermining our 1st Amendment and 2nd Amendment rights.

The best way progressives can push their satanic agenda is by marginalizing the Catholic Church. That objective is nearly complete. Then the enemies of truth will move in for the kill like this training suggests by lumping us Catholics in with outlaws. It is a matter of time, unless something drastic happens to turn the tide of relativism.
These people are very patient. We need more patience and perseverance. I am an 18 yr vet with 12 yrs active and 6 reserve. I also just left my gov job with DHS for a private org. This story is surprising only in that it came out too soon.
More than a bit disturbing and it makes me very angry because I know of many very good Catholics who joined the armed forces (including the Army) during a time of war. They have risked their lives, worried their families sick, and look how they’re treated.
Look at slide #5. According to that, a Catholic person who is also serving in the military is prohibited from:
1. Attending a pro-life rally (Participating in a Public Demonstration or Rally)
2. Attending a parish finance committee meeting, or even a parish picnic (Attending a Meeting or Activity with Knowledge that the Meeting or Activity Involves an Extremist Cause)
3. Selling pierogies or nutrolls after Mass during Lent to raise money for the parish (Fund Raising Activites)
4. Teaching catechism (Recruiting or Training Members)
5. Being a deacon, heading a committee, directing the church choir (Creating, Organizing, or Taking a Visible Leadership Role in such an Organization)
6. Handing the person in the next pew a church bulletin (Distributing Literature on or off a Military Installation)
Odd to think that yesterday I believed myself to be an ordinary citizen of this country, and today I found out that I am a religious extremist…
There must be something wrong. I’ve just been looking at groups listed as affiliated with Traditional Catholicism, and – admittedly a cursory glance – I can’t find anything which would have brought these groups on the radar, except that they accept the Catholic faith to be uniquely true. Once upon a time, every religion (and every other philosophy, for that matter, including relativism) claimed that it was uniquely true. Is the real push here to remove the possibility that objective truth exists?
Our world is dying Father, as they all must since worlds are just as mortal as men are even if their life spans are longer. It was nice that you mentioned the 1st and 2nd Amendments but the people of the United States have simply sat back and tolerated it and even cheered it on when the US Constitution has been shredded time and time again for these last many decades that those two bits of it won’t save anybody anymore. Sad, sad days and if there is a cure for them it is not constitutional but these: repentance, prayer, and penance before the Almighty decides to release some terrible chastisement against this society. I’m sure that statement just earned me a spot in an Obama Administration computer somewhere as an extremist but I don’t care anymore.

I have been for over a year, and in my 2007-2009 blog writing about the stages of persecution.
Vilifying is an advanced stage, and the next one is the implementation of law against those vilified. People have really been asleep, as this is part of a long chain of events which began in the 1960s. Of course, America has a long history of anti-Catholicism to add to these ideologies.
Those of us whose parents served in our nation’s military during WWII may look back with pride upon their contributions.
Today’s military is a completely different story, for here in these United States we are living under a completely different regime. (“Regime change” has happened, and it has happened to us.) The leadership within our new elite regime scorns and disdains ordinary working Americans, together with our ideals, our faith, our aspirations, and our traditions. To our elite regimistas, ordinary American people of faith are hapless Neanderthals, unable to cope, who take refuge in our guns and in our Bibles.
I have thought for quite some time that until one day (God willing) the regime changes back again, and until Americans are able once again to serve in our country’s armed forces with honor, I would discourage any young relative of mine from enlisting. Ever.

I believe what is coming to this country will be a fight to the death between the Marxist Left and the Christian Right. And when the left thinks they have all their ducks lined up, they will launch it – just like the French Revolution. When they believe they have triumphed, they will try and wipe out the Church and all who oppose them – and bring down upon themselves the wrath of God. I highly recommend “Trial, Tribulation & Triumph” by Desmond A. Birch, whose book describes what may be approaching and draws this from scripture and approved private revelation. We must pray for greater faith, trust and mitigation of the coming chastisement.
Seems to me Christ Himself fits their description of an “extremist.” After all, He did proclaim “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.”
Not to mention that “extremist” position of the First Person of the Holy Trinity: “You shall have no other gods before me.”
Several items I’d like to know, and believe should be public information, are missing.
1. Who prepared this report? Is it the redacted LtCol referred to in the notes? The unit should be clearly displayed.
2. What’s with the style? It lacks all of the standard military briefing format, particularly those focused on national security affairs, i.e. headings, organization, classification (at minimum FOUO), etc.
3. Where is the investigative report? Was there really an investigation or even a “What’s going on over there, Fisbee?” phone call? What was the action taken?
4. Is the Archdiocese really satisfied that the issue is closed? Or has every Catholic and Evangelical Christian member of the military family just gotten a shot across the bow? Al Qaeda today, you tomorrow.
Oops, I see their problem! They relied on a disgusting and vile hate group (SPLC) for a list of hate groups!
The military is the last hold out in the culture to bend to the secular progressives. The ideals inculcated in Basic Training/Boot Camp of sacrifice, responsibility, team work, honor, commitment and attention to detail are all counter relativist. This is evidenced by there being an overwhelming amount of military members that did not vote for the current commander in chief. As well as FOX news being the preferred cable news channel on most installations.
I know plenty of secular progressives in the military and it still boggles the mind to think that they have not reconsidered their position after having been deployed oversees and visited countries who lack the rights we as Americans have. They are a minority in the military.
Ironically, the same protection the govm’t has by appointing flag rank officers (Generals and Admirals) might be the downfall of the military, and the U.S., by appointing these progressive friendly but small minority of individuals as the leaders.
If, in the future, this type of soft persecution continues in the military, the type who volunteer for military service will drop dramatically and the government will be forced to re-introduce the draft.
Someone needs to remind them what fraction of those in the military are belong to either the Catholic Church or denominations they’d characterize as evangelical Christian. Take out those “extremists”, and it would not just be the military that would be gutted. The Supreme Court would take quite a hit, too!
I used to think I had nothing to worry about, now I do. To think I, a law-abiding citizen, would be considered a potential enemy of my country because of my faith.
My sense of patriotism is dying every single day, and now I wonder if it’s only a matter of time before we’re forced to take to the streets against the regime… or worse.
Our Bishops and the USCCB are aiding in the destruction of our Second Amendment rights, by supporting the latest gun control legislation. Just ask Sister Walsh.
Yes, it is being taught, for example, in the Marine boot camp that my friend’s son attended that pro-life people are “terrorists” and if you read comments to religious articles in the media, the hatred and vitriol against religion–especially the Catholic Church–, life itself, sexual morality, and etc is huge. The cool thing is to be a promiscuous ‘gay’ person who is an ‘atheist”.
The chastisement is upon us. This is just its horizon.
The USCCB needs to see the larger picture. Catholics are not necessarily pacifists.

Both of my sons served honorably, bringing to four generations the family’s contribution: WWI, WWII, Cold War, Desert Storm, Green Zone Transfer. All ours. It remains an honorable profession, and will so long as honorable people serve.
Bad sides? Sure. All those pathetic ‘human beings’ running around. But watch he recruit processing line when they’re handing out dog tags. There’s a helluvalotta kids asking for RC. They may not be quite as holy as the Pope, but deep down inside they know they’d like a priest if it comes to that.
By extension, your comment implies that I should look at the bad aspects of Catholicism and start looking for a new Messiah. I really do hope that’s not what you meant to say.
Good article, Fr. Z. Cantor: good question. The holding people accountable part is critical.
Activism is not something we can sidestep anymore. I myself would love to hide in my house and avoid the culture entirely. If God would allow it, that’s probably what I would do, because it’s upsetting and it’s fatiguing. Who feels like going after all these matters? Isn’t LIFE enough? It is but we have greater responsibilities, to our God, our children, our culture. If we give in, roll over and go to sleep, there is no way to stem this tide or declare a victory of any kind.
It is easy to get stressed, burned out, and then avoidance becomes extremely tempting.
If you want to do SOMETHING, here are some suggestions that may help you.
1. Pray first. Pray often. I admit I sometimes forget this, and feel as it it’s all up to me, but of course without God, we can’t be successful, and with Him, we can’t possibly lose.
2. Support organizations that will do the fighting for you. I support the Catholic League, EWTN, the National Organization for Marriage, and the Family Institute of Connecticut. I don’t give them a million dollars, wish I could, but, I just do what I can at least once a year. Then you can “relax” knowing you are doing something concrete, and they all do great work on our behalf.
3. Limit exposure to news. Sounds contrary, but it’s not. We can’t fix the world. We can’t take on all things and be all things to all causes. I take in the national or international news about once a week, but not daily anymore. It is just TOO MUCH. Too much information, too much stress. I figure if the North Koreans drop a bomb on my head, I’ll figure it out in due time anyway.
4. Use email and Facebook to be an activist. Make phone calls if you can. Example, most entities have Facebook. You can go to the site and leave a comment about your concerns. You are educating others when you write an email or leave a comment in a media combox. You are telling others that YOU feel that way, and are defending your right to say it. Many people are too cowardly to express their opinion, even if it completely agrees with yours. People are frightened and intimidated by those in power today. As a public school employee, I totally get how in the minority I would be if pressed to support something I did not agree with, and how that might affect my employment. But there are ways to be an activist that does NOT have to threaten your livelihood or public standing. People are not likely, either, to “find out” who you are and show up at your door screaming and holding signs. I am certainly NOT saying these might not be completely worth it, however. If it comes to it, I would rather that happen than have to face God and answer as to why I said nothing in the face of evil and wrongdoing.
I recently saw a tally on my computer of my online activism efforts. It said something like in the past year I have made 600 or so comments, probably most to major media outlets like USA Today. Might I be whistling in the wind? I might. Waste of time and energy? Maybe. But it is the little something I CAN do, when I see God insulted, Catholics insulted, our clergy insulted, and these un-American, fascist, dictatorial ideas taking hold. It is my little war effort.
It may embolden others to speak out as well. So it’s like planting a seed. It may add up to little, but I’m happy God knows my heart anyway.
The last and perhaps worst reason to be an activist is, I don’t want “them” to win. I don’t! Why, after our ancestors came here (even 1 generation) and struggled, should we allow fascists to dictate what we believe, think, and do? My ancestry is Irish, and I swear I feel my DNA all but collecting itself and screaming at me, do something! You may beat the Irish down a bit, but they’ll keep muttering, and when opportunity arises, they’ll fight you, and likely win.
We don’t know if we’ll win. We are really up against it. The culture is run by madmen and atheists. They are winning hearts and minds. They are silencing good people. They are scary. They are even violent. But we have God. That is an unpopular claim, I know, but, we do. We know right is on our side. And we can win hearts and minds and give encouragement to others to fight these things by our witness and tenacity. There is a true possibility that if we do this, we CAN win. There are many people who are just waiting to see who emerges victorious. It has to be us at least sometimes!
Right now I am contacting George Washington University and asking them to support Chaplain Shaffer. Two homosexual students are demanding he be ousted for counseling homosexuals to be celibate. This Nazi-like behavior must not be indulged, and as Catholics and Americans we have a responsibility to defend Chaplain Shaffer and “encourage” George Washington University to do the right thing! Pick your battles, but you and I can probably pick one daily and make some noise! Politics and activism is where it’s at these days. It’s where the culture war is getting played out, and we do not have the luxury (if we ever did) of ignoring it. If we are silent, we will lose this by default. Lean Forward? Oh heck no, but ONWARD….

Those who align themselves with abortion, infanticide, assisted suicide and homosexuality are by definition ENEMIES OF THE CHURCH, allies of Satan, and Anti-God. We should not be surprised at ANYTHING they do against the Church. THEY are the real terrorists, and we who hold to the TRUE FAITH are their TARGETS.

There are also people in our own Church who refer to us “conservative” or “traditional” Catholics as “Taliban Catholics.”
It is a mistake to see this as a ‘left wing’ ‘right wing’ issue.
The modern state brooks NO divided loyalties. If one has any conscience whatever, formed through whatever philosophy, and if that conscience might impel one to defy the will of the secular state, then one is a religious extremist.
Anyone with any scruples whatever is an enemy of the state.
I’m a former Army reservist. I served 13 years, active duty and later as a reservist. I am current the coordinator for Catholic ministry at a nearby women’s prison. Our masses and bible studies are in the same category as Wiccans, satanists, jews, mormons, etc. We are considered a protected minority by the department of corrections, but what this actually means is that we are not considered “christian”. The “general christian” group is by far the largest category in the prison. And we are not allowed to evangelize either. If a person does not declare themselves a catholic at the time they were incarcerated, they are not allowed to attend our masses or classes. This is discrimination, but we are trying to change this perception of our Catholic faith, through positive ways such as echunemical efforts that benefit the entire prison. We have an annual ice cream social with a live band for 700 inmates. Because of this the chaplaincy allowed us to conduct an Ash Wednesday service and Good Friday Way of the Cross for the entire prison. Positive outreach produces far better results and acceptance with other faith denominations than negative attitudes. We work to overcome the negative attitudes within our own ministry first, in order to reach out with love and compassion to people in other faith denominations. This is by far the best way to evangelize our faith.
If the Obama administration wins a favorable ruling on DOMA (i.e. striking it down), I fully expect that shortly thereafter the administration will require all chaplains to conduct gay weddings, thus destroying the Archdiocese in one fell swoop.
I support the Archdiocese of the Military financially too – they have a special place in my heart as I was baptised as an infant by a (Jesuit) member of the Military Ordinariate. I started getting letters from them after my parish sent them my record of first communion and confirmation last year :-)
Pray for our Supreme Court justices, including the ones we would not expect to uphold marriage. Miracles do happen.

Thanks for the complete link. It does a better job of explaining the situation. I still have some concern about what this bodes for the future — serious attacks in war are frequently preceded by small probes — but it has served to awaken folks.

Having served in the military and the federal government, the quotes sound very much like the finger pointing that occurred this week at the Rutgers University press conference regarding the basketball coaching failure. NO ONE wants to take responsibility. NO ONE will admit to poor management oversight, poor supervision and a failure to lead. “It was his fault!” “He should resign not me.”
Notice where some of the “statistics” came from? The Southern Poverty Law Center that is decidedly pro-choice.
One thing I learned about Army briefings was that you had to play to the audience. I would have thought senior officers would have jumped into the briefer’s face until I thought about how very political they are at this level. They want those stars in the worst way, even to the point of sacrificing what they know to be right.
In 2010, Admiral Michael Mullen told a chaplain, “If you cannot get in line, resign your commission.” Also, Army Lieutenant General Thomas P. Bostick told military members who dissented from Obama’s gay rights agenda they should “get out.”
The Obama Administration has been able to bully the military into conforming to their wishes, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that “Real” Catholics (not the political laity AND clergy ones) are viewed as this administration’s enemies. If it wasn’t for the company we were listed with, we could be very proud!

I know a former military chaplain, a priest, who said the best thing about being a Catholic chaplain is that you didn’t have to worry that speaking the truth would leave you without a job. He said you knew your bishop would back you up, and even if the military threw you out, they’d have to do after a tangle with the Archbishop for the Military Services and you would still be a priest, no matter what happened. The chaplains from Protestant denominations sometimes had fears of offending the wrong people in the military, losing their positions, and being left with no way to support themselves or their wives and children.

Asked if he thought the US government would have too much influence if an American cardinal were elected Pope, Obama quipped: “I don’t know if you’ve checked lately, but the Conference of Catholic Bishops here in the U.S. doesn’t seem to be taking orders from me.” I don’t know if he has anything against religion, but I’m thinking that a rival is a rival to him. only we may, perhaps, hope that if generals start to talk like politicians, their influence to the military will diminish to the influence of the political command – viz., obedience, but a lot of “well that’s political talk and can be neglected”.
The general trend in the nco corps (the backbone of the army) is much more meaningful… hence the incident reported by the dear @Joseph-Mary is more alarming. Still I have some feeling that this may perhaps be just a drill instructor who happens to be pro-abortion and who is talking in the manner of a drill instructor.
I work in an independent Catholic bookstore and recently filled an order for the U.S. Army Reserve base near Chicago. I worked with the Catholic Chaplain and another Sargent to fill the order through the usual approval and payment system for the books to be paid for by the base. They purchased 100 copies of “God and Country: Reflections for Catholics in the Military”, a nice prayer book published by Franciscan Media. If you read the entire powerpoint presentation you see at the end a list of groups that they are talking about. The three that are Catholic are: Alliance for Catholic Tradition, Catholic Apologetics International, Inc., and Catholic Counterpoint. I don’t know much about them but from a quick look at their websites they seem to be not approved by their Bishops, anti-Semetic, schismatic, etc. It is hard to imagine the purchase order for specifically Catholic books being approved if this presentation is accurate.

I remember in basic we had a drill sergeant who (for effect) didn’t like whatever or whoever you were – it was part of his job.
The problem with the NCO corps is that they are at the mercy of whatever program comes down the line: they have to attend classes that are so PC that open discussion is not welcome and, for the brave souls that do disagree with the topic it might put their careers in jeopardy (officers, as the preceding examples show, are also affected).
The overall effect is that military members learn to keep their mouths shut because their is really no one to defend you (despite what “official” sources might say).

The thing is that this is nothing new. This is the general situation of military members. Generals perhaps excepted.
Nevertheless, it still is the nco corps, including all its attitudes they dare not speak out, which forms the army; for good or evil. The effect of officers is much less.
(I may think it an unnecessary and probably bad strategy of a drill instructor to dislike his subordinates, but that does not belong here. And after all I was once part of a Catholic-by-heritage, and thus, paternalistic part of an army. Erik v. Just to set the record straight, the presentation does not list all Christians, nor does it list Mormons; it is, very definitely, very specifically, labeling Catholics and Evangelicals as extremists alongside Al Qaeda and the KKK. I think the confusion is because of the groups “Christian Identity” and “Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saint” being listed. “Christian Identity” is a group of white- supremacist racist “churches” and the “Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints” is a group of Mormon-fundamentalists, not mainline LDS.
Ever thus. I can only imagine that things are “progressing” as they are supposed to. Obviously, not content with simply threatening to close the RCC Churches by whatever means possible, (Obamacare being the first salvo, then unatural marriage), the evil Elites that run this country seek to make the Faithful enemies of the State. I have come to think of the U.S. as the fastest developing Pagan society on the face of the earth.
I remember a sermon given a few years ago – and I think this topic has been widely discussed in a lot of places ……. “If being a Catholic was against the law, would there be enough evidence against you to get you convicted?” At the time, the “question” was quaint – the sermon was designed to get you to think about your Catholic identity and how you live your life. I didn’t realize how prophetic the premise would be. I think in my lifetime, I just might see people being arrested for “being Catholic”. Oh well, I said it before and will say it again – I am a Catholic who happens to be American, not an American who happens to be Catholic – God’s will be done.
