We are today visiting Major Basilicas. First St Paul’s outside-the-walls.
We are going to have a visit to the excavation where St Paul’s tomb was recently authenticated by the architect/archeologist who conducted it.
UPDATE
John XXIII’s manuscript for his first speech of Vatican II, delivered today! In 1963.
UPDATE:
We had some lunch …
For me the bet mozzarella I have tasted in years.
To the scavi under St Peter’s.
I left the group for a moment to use my Vatican Bank ATM card and ran into Msgr. Marini. We had a nice chat. Kind fellow.
we will be at Sant’Andrea della Fratte for Mass this evening. Bp Morlino is joining us.
UPDATE:
After a really packed day, and Mass at Sant’Andrea della Fratte (Bp. Morlino celebrant) we retired to a nearby place to eat.
It’s Friday. Some clams.
Some fish.
A stroll to bed.
Tomorrow should bring us, God willing to Norcia and Assisi.
A magnificent Basilica!
Yes, very beautiful.
In 2003, I was blessed to attend, with my son, Mother Teresa’s Beatification in Rome. A co-worker of mine in New York had an aunt who was a Sister of St. Paul. Her name was Sr. Clementina. At that time she was quite old. The family in NY had not seen her in many years, so they gave me pictures of the family to bring to her. The sisters have a convent very close to the St. Paul Basilica. My son and I rode the subway from Rome to the Basilica… After being lost for a time, we found the convent and met Sr. Clementina, who was quite pleased and excited. Sister died a few months after our visit.
Here is the picture of Sr. Clementina, holding the envelope of pictures.

God’s blessings to all!
“… delivered today! In 1963.”
That is a typo. The year was 1962. The Pope died in June of 1963.
Please father..more about the food!
Breakfast, dinner etc…
Yes, food! The basilicas etc. are gorgeous, but the food looks so yummy.
adeacon, that’s really neat. There aren’t many things cuter than an elderly sister!
I love the pictures. Thank you Father Z.
What a great picture of you and Msgr. Marini!
Yes, indeed, a fine photo with Msgr. Marini. (A “selfie”??)
My first thought…”The Dynamic Duo!”
Wow! Msgr. Marini. Did he try and recruit you?
AND Mass with Bp. Morlino, too. Can it get any better?
I’m fully expecting you to bump into Pope Francis at some point.
And Msgr. Marini told you he’ll be the next Prefect of the CDW, right? Right?
Ah, to be surrounded by so much family!
The food pictures inspire me to make ravioli with my son today.
*Not to hijack the thread but if you ever visit Northern CA I think you’d enjoy this buffalo mozzarella. http://www.raminimozzarella.com/index.html
Fr. Z,
Do you have any inside scoop (you are free to reveal) about the medallion?
http://rt.com/news/papal-medal-misspell-lesus-044/
A whole new dimension of ‘Pope and Change’!
How wonderful.
Enjoy your dinner.
Msgr. Marini’s kindness shows on his face. I have long noticed that when seen on TV.
the 3 musketeers joining together to save the liturgy.
Say the Black
Do the Red
Right , Andrew, I noticed that. I was in Rome in June 1962 and I remember they were building the platforms inside St. Peter’s because V2 was opening that fall.
Father Z,
“when you start changing the way people pray, you start changing what people
believe” How well we remember you saying this when you were in Rome in March, when talking with Colleen Carroll Campbell…..EWTN…..
Pass this on in Rome to all those who are so liberal and have no use for the Mass in the E.F. Our Regards to Msgr. Guido Marini, please tell him he does SUCH A GREAT JOB as Master of Ceremonies for Pope Francis and when Benedict was Pope…..I pray you get to see and talk with Pope E. Benedict and if you do I will say again….tell him how MUCH WE LOVE HIM AND MISS HIM….
Fr.Z your blog is wonderful and thanks for keeping us posted…..have been to Rome three times….it is one of my favorite cities in Italy…..
Great Pic with the Master. If the opportunity presents itself, please take a picture with Pope Benedict.
That is a fab photo of you with the Msgr!
St Paul outside-the-walls is such a beautiful church. I have only seen it once, many years ago before the excavations. Would love to see it again. I made the mistake of sitting down discreetly on the floor near a column at the back to breastfed my small baby in the very hot weather. I was summarily chastised by an official in the building! Still didn’t spoil the great beauty and peace of the building though.
Lucky you, Father! I hope you gave Msgr. Marini the complete WDTPRS merchandise set of “Say the Black, Do the Red” and “Save the Liturgy, Save the World” :) He’s the “good” Marini, right? I’m sure he’d love the stuff! :)
many times at San Andrea for mass–often Saturday morning
The things which must be going through the mind of Msgr. Marini. What a whipsaw he’s experienced these last seven months.
Having studied in Rome, I’ve been to St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s and on the scavi and had amazingly fresh moz…
But you made me very jealous with the Msgr. Marini photo. Well played, Fr. Z.
(The readership wants to know: Is Msgr. a Fr. Z regular reader?)
adeacon, that is just lovely! How adorable is she! Love her name, love her happy face. You brought her joy just before she left this world. What a blessing for you and for her.
Fr. Z., the photos are so fun. Thank you for taking us along!
I would slice up that mozzarella and make a killer pizza.
