My view for awhile

Back on the road after the great Legatus meeting and a few short days with my mother.

Now I am heading North, but not immediately to the Steam Pipe Trunk Distribution Venue. No . I get to go to Detroit! Tomorrow I am to speak on sacred art at the Detroit Institute of Art for an event sponsored by the outstanding Call To Holiness initiative.

I still some work to do on the talk, mostly technical stuff, images and all that. Since I never use PowerPoint, I am behind the curve a little. We shall see.

UPDATE:

Waiting for “ground squirrels” to get us to our gate.

Have a safe flight and a great talk tomorrow, Father. I’m hoping someone in your audience will video your talk and post it here or somewhere for those of us not in the Detroit area.

  2. yatzer says:

No Power Point? Unheard of! How can you possibly function? (read false horror here)

  3. gracie says:

Please would you videotape your talk? We who love art and only get the secular spin on it would be grateful.

  4. acardnal says:

With your computer skills, Fr. Z, you should have no issues with Power Point. For one thing, you can simply drag and drop photos or graphics onto your slide.

  5. Natalie Anne says:

When you get your Power Point done, can you post it on here with a video of the talk? Would love to hear it.

  6. Andrew says:

Speaking of art: “ars prima est ne ars esse videatur.”

  7. The Mac version of Powerpoint in Office for Mac is easier to use than the Windows PC version, in case you are using that Mac laptop.

  8. Mike says:

My experience with the last few versions of Microsoft Office for Windows has been progressively more disappointing. The icon ribbon seems to become denser and less intuitive with every release.

However, PowerPoint 2013 does seem to be less frustrating than its predecessor for creating slides. When you go to save or retrieve, Microsoft intrudes the cloud and adds needless clicks to local storage and retrieval options.

As I recall, Father is a Mac guy (Macerdos?) so Tina’s observation may trump this one. Safe travels, Father, and may your slides flow smoothly.

  9. Nan says:

Isn’t going to Detroit an act of penance? Detroit itself. Not the event.

  10. All: I have a Mac but that doesn’t mean that I like it.

    FWIW

But Father, But Father, Macs are Catholic!

But maybe for you, using a Mac is like fulfilling your Sunday obligation at a N.O. Mass? – you go, and God works on you with autocorrect and fixes up your margins and brings your photos into better focus so that you can make a decent public presentation, and it does you good: but it doesn’t mean that you like it. :-)

“All: I have a Mac but that doesn’t mean that I like it.”

But, but, you can load Windows onto it or even open up a terminal window for a true UNIX experience.

What I don’t like is PowerPoint, on any flavor of computer. Why not just do a slide show?

Anyone in the Detroit area is still welcome to register online at http://www.calltoholiness.com. Walk-in registrations are welcome if you arrive between 10 am and 12 noon at the Group Entrance behind the Detroit Institute of Arts on John R.

    I’m going!

Welcome back, Father! Hope all goes well for your talk. Wish I could attend. Hope you brought some warm air from Florida!

  16. Father, sorry you aren’t crazy about the Mac. It does take getting used to.

Echoing the Chicken, consider loading Parallels which allows you to use Windows on the Mac [I guess it runs the PC OS?]. Parallels reduces frustration in the corporate world in trading documents with PC users and Mac-unfriendly websites. There may be something better – just my experience.

The Mac requires somewhat of an extrication from the Windows mindset and a re-orientation of process. For instance, for photo storage on the Mac, because iPhoto has an efficiency threshold [I think it ‘breaks’ at 250,000 images?], I don’t even import images into iPhoto. Instead I use Mac’s Image Capture to import and send all images into Pictures folders. There in the Finder, I can label and organize folders and sub-folders any way I want, and also view images using the ‘eye’ icon there in the Finder. I find the ‘Event’ structure in iPhoto ridiculously restrictive. You can then either import particular images or folders into iPhoto as needed or point iPhoto to different folders. Otherwise I just use other photo apps for editing, since I never bothered to pay for the iPhoto upgrade anyway. This folder organization allows practically limitless image storage on the Mac and the images are searchable through Spotlight and Finder.
Well, anyway…just in case photos are part of the frustration, and thinking you might be using photos for your slides.
