Rome: Day 2 – Un pò di ‘relax’

I am just hanging out without controversy swamp fever. Sometimes I just need to breathe.

Coffee at Sant’Eustachio with some folks who wanted to go. I stepped outside to let them finish and ran into Card. Zen. A great man. I have met him several times before, and we had a good conversation.

They wanted to stop in at SS Cosma et Damiano. The Via Dei Fori Imperiali is closed today in preparation for the civic holiday. It is madness down there.

A shot of the mosaic which I spoke of in a podcast.

We have dashed out if the City to have lunch at Castel Gandolfo. Wanna see some appetizers?

UPDATE:

I said Mass tonight at SS Trinità dei Pelegrini. This is actually a photo of the guy who said Mass after mine.

Now we are having a drink (yes, I am with people yet). Which is mine?

Which drink is Fr Z's?

Where did you eat lunch in Castel Gandolfo? I’ll be there next Saturday and that looks delicious!
When do you plan to leave Rome?

    [The unbeatable Pagnanelli.]

  2. Man, you still have the best life …

    Pray for us.

[When I get back to the Steam Pipe Trunk Distribution Venue it will be tuna and ramen. Well… not really. I worked as a cook for years, so I can make good food from the simplest ingredients. But now and then we have to really pull out the stops. This is the Octave of Easter and Christ is indeed RISEN.]

Father, thank you for sharing, your post conveys a peaceful sense of the day and I smile to think of you having such a pleasant time when Rome must be a complete zoo this week!

  4. kpoterack says:

“I am just hanging out without controversy swamp fever. Sometimes I just need to breathe.”

KP: Good for you. Enjoy your breather!

  5. Looks fantastic!! I’ve been to SS Cosma et Damiano before, but wasn’t able to see much of the inside…they were doing major renovations and I couldn’t get much of the scaffolding to see the interior… :(

  6. StJude says:

Wow… oh how I want to see Rome one day!! Keep the pictures coming… I love seeing it.

    Have a great time, Father!

  7. yatzer says:

I may be having a serious problem with envy.

  8. StWinefride says:

Father Z says: We have dashed out of the City to have lunch at Castel Gandolfo.

But Father! But Father! You could have gone to Genazzano for the great Feast of Our Lady of Good Counsel/St Mark! It would have been nice to see photos. I have been there but never on April 25th.

O Holy Virgin, to whose feet we are led by our anxious uncertainty in our search for and attainment of what is true and good, invoking you by the sweet title of Mother of Good Counsel, we beseech you to come to our assistance, when, along the road of this life, the darkness of error and of evil conspires towards our ruin by leading our minds and our hearts astray. O Seat of Wisdom and Star of the Sea, enlighten the doubtful and the erring, that they be not seduced by the false appearances of good; render them steadfast in the face of the hostile and corrupting influences of passion and of sin. O Mother of Good Counsel, obtain for us from your Divine Son a great love of virtue, and, in the hour of uncertainty and trial, the strength to embrace the way that leads to our salvation. If your hand sustains us, we shall walk unmolested along the path indicated to us by the life and words of Jesus, our Redeemer; and having followed freely and securely, even in the midst of this world’s strife, the Sun of Truth and Justice under your maternal Star, we shall come to the enjoyment of full and eternal peace with you in the haven of salvation. Amen.

Prayer composed by Pope Pius XII (who dedicated his Pontificate to Our Lady of Good Counsel).

[The restaurant to which I wanted to take these folks is not in Genazzano!]

  9. StWinefride says:

Oh, perhaps I should add: Pope Pius XII – Santo Subito!

  10. Denis Crnkovic says:

Father, whenever you post these great pictures from Rome, I have to repeat to myself “Jealousy is a sin. Jealousy is a sin. Jealousy is a sin…” Enjoy your “pò di ‘relax’”!

  11. Ttony says:

Father, if you get the chance: what does an international call from the Domus Sanctae Marthae cost per minute?

  12. you strike me as an OJ kinda guy. (sunshine)

  13. Frank_Bearer says:

    Is that Prosciutto?

    Meat on Friday?

    tsk tsk…

[Don’t tisk me your tisk, you pharisee! Octave of Easter! I’ll see your tisk and raise you a piffle!]

  14. BigRed says:

Does Father not enjoy a Negroni? One part gin, one part sweet vermouth, one part Campari, on the rocks in an Old Fashioned glass, garnished with orange peel.

  15. OrthodoxChick says:

I voted for Campari & soda. You can have gin in the U.S. any ‘ol time. That antipasto looks sooo tasty – especially the slice of frittata! The only thing I might add to it is some soupy.

    Enjoy your well deserved R ‘n R!

  16. churchlady says:

    Frank_Bearer –
Today is a “smear the walls with meat” day, Easter Friday! Enjoy lots of meat today!

  17. akp1 says:

Enjoy your time there Fr. I’ll pray for you in Lourdes this coming week.

  18. Uxixu says:

I did expect Father Z to be rocking a cassock, though.

[How I dress shouldn’t be much of a concern for you. We can leave that to the Fishwrappers. However, I do keep a cassock in Rome. I haven’t had a chance to pick it up, because I have been with people and my schedule has not yet allowed time to visit my friend who has it.]

  19. Uxixu says:

Not losing sleep over it, Reverend Father, I just love seeing priests in Cassocks. It’s all too rare these days. :(

  20. ChesterFrank says:

1- If you are going to post photo’s of food while in Italy, please make sure they are full screen.
2- I voted Campari Soda. Campari is rarely seen in my part of the world, and to me that is simply wrong.

[Please increase your monthly giving so that I can use even more data on my mobile here in Rome! I promise food photos for all when all… more?… donate.]

  21. Uxixu says:

Hmm that came out a bit more flippant than I intended. Mea maximula culpa, Father Z. Meant it more reverently than it reads. Nothing but the greatest respect for you and this blog.

  22. Uxixu: Hey! I want my cassock too! That’s why I left it here.

  23. benedetta says:

    Cardinal Zen! Inspiring!

  24. UncleBlobb says:

“Please increase your monthly giving so that I can use even more data on my mobile here in Rome!”

I think some of us would pay a lot for a Fr. Z. and John Sonnen Roman Pilgrimage trip. ;) Just sayin’.

  25. Sid Cundiff in NC says:

Sant’Eustachio is fine, yet the Holy Grail of Espresso is Tazza d’Oro, just as the El Dorado for gelato is Giolitti, and the Mecca for cigars is Fincato, Via della Colonna Antonina, 34, 00186 Roma, which is 100% Cuban; go upstairs to the cigar room.

But you probably know all this already.

  26. Bea says:

    Father, What’s the answer?

I didn’t vote Campari Soda (but was tempted to) since you had it the day before, so I voted Aperol (for a variety).

Looks like not so much “Un pò di ‘relax’” , more like “Molto’relax” Glad you’re enjoying your trip.
