The new Bishop of Albany had a monstrance in his hands most of last week, as well as celebrating Confirmation with Benediction in the Extraordinary Form! If this isn’t a a brick by brick then what is?

  2. Inigo says:

Tomorrow we are going on a pilgrimage to Mariazell with my wife and first born son. We started our honeymoon there three years ago, since then we go back each year. When we found out that my wife was pregnant with my son (after two miscarriages) we immediately went to our parish and prayed at the Mariazell altar, we offered him to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. After my son was born, without any complications and fully healthy, we went back to the parish and placed him on the same altar. Now, six months old, he will come to the Virgin Mary in Mariazell in person.

Some friends are coming with us too, one of them is not baptized, and is thinking about converting to Catholicism, so in your charity, please pray for him!

  3. Mike says:

I’m scheduled to take Thursday and Friday off for some much-needed recharging of the spiritual batteries, toward which end I’ll be attending an FSSP-led retreat this weekend (please pray for its success!).

  4. Elizabeth D says:

On Sunday after the Spanish language Mass I will become a Godmother to two young Latino girls (entering 3rd and 7th gr), one of whom had been one of my catechism students last year. Their family neglected to have them baptized as infants but they went through RCIC this year. Their dad was working Holy Saturday evening and they could not attend the Easter Vigil so the baptism had to be scheduled later. The older girl will also receive her First Holy Communion at the evening Spanish Mass the same day. She is so excited! She has been studying her St Joseph (Baltimore Catechism) First Communion Catechism and happily says she now knows “everything about Jesus!” (then I showed her Youcat and the CCC and said these are the teenage and adult catechisms and I would give them copies of these too, she was not intimidated but interested–awesome). For Sunday evening their family has rented a hall for a party. Their dad has brought them over to my house a number of times (I do not drive) and then we attended weekday evening Mass in English (they had never been to Mass in English before, which is the language they personally prefer) then have some dinner and learn about the Faith. Their dad says we may continue doing this after they are baptized. They, their older brother, and I will go also on a Spanish language parish pilgrimage to the National Shrine of Mary Help of Christians, the beautiful Holy Hill, at the end of August. I had been asked by the DRE to be their sponsor because the original godparents were not validly married and intended to return to Mexico, I had uncertainties about this because I didn’t know the parents and there was somewhat of a language barrier (mom does not speak English) but I should not have worried. These are lovely joyful girls from a loving family, I am celibate for the kingdom of God so this is a great way to be spiritually a mother and hand on the Faith.

    Greasemonkey,
With you on Bp. Scharfenberger. Last week, he led a walk for life around the capitol.

I don’t Gov. Cuomo was walking.

  6. a catechist says:

a reverent N.O. Mass this morning; the priest preached on the line “by your fruits you will know them” that for a tree to have good fruit, its roots had to be in Christ himself, in his word and in the Magisterium of the Church, in the sacraments, good works, and in silent prayer.

Please remember this faithful priest in your prayers!

  7. Quanah says:

This past Sunday I received the scapular and entered formation for the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites.

  8. A funeral affording the rare experience of an OF Latin Requiem Mass celebrated ad orientem with black vestments and with a schola singing the traditional Gregorian chants of the Mass for the Dead that few have heard at a Catholic funeral in recent decades. It may be news to some that the proper chants (introit, gradual, offertory, communion) of the Mass for the Dead, given for the OF in the Graduale Romanum 1974, are the same as those for the EF as found in a 1962 missal. For instance, how often at an ordinary parish funeral does hear (in either Latin or English) following offertory chant:

O Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory, deliver the souls of all the faithful departed from the pains of hell and from the bottomless pit: deliver them from the lion’s mouth, that hell swallow them not up, that they fall not into darkness, but let the standard-bearer holy Michael lead them into that holy light; which Thou didst promise of old to Abraham and to his seed. We offer to Thee, O Lord, sacrifices and prayers: do Thou receive them in behalf of those souls of whom we make memorial this day. Grant them, O Lord, to pass from death to that life which Thou didst promise to Abraham and to his seed.

The one (choral) difference from an EF Requiem Mass will be that the Dies Irae (“Day of Wrath”)—regarded by many as the finest single composition in the whole treasury of Catholic hymnody—will be heard after communion rather than before the Gospel.

  9. StJude says:

I’ve been in awe for the last couple weeks…. I did a 54 day rosary for my Uncle who had all kinds of health concerns and was giving up on life. He had been taken to the hospital when i started it… 54 days later, he is feeling good… he has a new lease on life… things are 180 degrees different.
    Our Lady is amazing.

  10. We attended Fr Walker’s funeral last week; the Requiem mass was beautiful. It was wonderful to see so many praying for the repose of his soul. Afterwards, we were able to visit with friends and priests we hadn’t seen in a long time. The road trip was smooth and uneventful, and we had good weather driving there and back.

  11. majuscule says:

Three Corpus Christi Masses–two EF, one OF; one procession (at the OF Mass); two benedictions…much incense.

And I am going to be attending a TLM workshop this weekend.

  12. downyduck says:

My family and I have been attending our local “modern” church for 14 years now for the sake of community and the lack of options. Two Sundays ago was the last straw- when the recessional “hymn” begins with bongo drums and ends with 70-year-old ladies clapping and dancing in the aisles, you know some sort of line has been crossed. So this past Sunday, we drove 90 miles to St. Mary Cathedral in Austin to attend the Corpus Christi Mass and Eucharistic Procession to the Capitol. It felt like coming home… the reverence, the angelic music, the architecture, the stained glass, the Latin, the TRADITION… and this was a Novus Ordo Mass- how I imagine that Mass should be celebrated. I can’t stop thinking about it. My husband and I have made a commitment to attend monthly. We want our seven kids to know that THIS is our Catholic identity. http://smcaustin.org/

  13. Josemaria says:

Evidently a Lutheran chaplain desires Latin in what he refers to as “Lutheran Mass.” Good news, though confusing to me. Does not Mass imply transubstantiation and the representation of the sacrifice at Calvary?

    http://thejaggedword.com/2014/06/24/restore-latin-to-the-mass/

Also, I tried to submit this through the “Ask Father Question Box,” but it kept saying I had an invalid input. I am unsure why.

  14. Lucy C says:

Our first grandchild (a baby boy), is due 2 months from today!

  15. Skeinster says:

Our daughter’s neuro-opthalmology appointment was unexpectedly moved up to tomorrow.
Apprehensive about the outcome, but grateful for not having to wait weeks!

  16. Benedict says:

The Dominican Province of St. Joseph (Eastern) is grateful to God for the men who have been accepted for the 2014 Novitiate class. Please pray for them!

7 friars were ordained to the priesthood of Jesus Christ on May 23.

Among the summer 2014 vocation events taking place, there will be a Missa Cantata in the extraordinary form of the Dominican Rite at St. Patrick’s in Columbus on August 3.

And 12 friars will make their Solemn Profession of Vows in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on August 9 (too many for the Mass to be at the Dominican House of Studies).

  17. Menagerie says:

My husband and I participated in our first Eucharistic Procession on Sunday, the first one held in our town in probably 40-50 years at least. We had a very large turnout, including one parishioner who is an amputee and made it on crutches.

The wonders that a devout, reverent, and energetic priest can bring about in half a year continue to amaze me. His enthusiastic leadership is bringing out the best in our parishioners, and in our worship and service.

Three men were recently ordained in our diocese.

My life is filled with so many blessings and the challenges have been occasions of grace.

  18. Facta Non Verba says:

The decision in the Hobby Lobby case will quite likely be decided tomorrow. You can watch the live blog as the various opinions are issued on the SCOTUS blog starting at 9 AM central. I’m expecting very good news.

  19. robtbrown says:

    I expect an 8-1 or 9-0 decision

  20. NoraLee9 says:

Hubby’s U rating hearing went well. Most likely the rating was overturned. The principal (who was removed) will not be returning. He received an “Effective” rating from the new principal. Today is the last day of the public school year here in NYC. We made it through the worst academic year in memory.
He also has part-time job offers from the SpEd program and a nearby college. This will help catch up on the bills.
Our daughter will be attending Syracuse University in the fall. Financial Aid and scholarships are covering most of it. Thanks be to G-d, and Our Lady.

  21. JonPatrick says:

This is somewhat old news, but back in May a new priest from our home parish in Lewiston ME was ordained to the Diocese of Portland ME. On May 31 he celebrated his first Mass, which he chose to do as a Missa Cantata in the Extraordinary Form, at the Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul in Lewiston. (The Basilica is one of the 2 locations in Maine that offers the EF regularly, the other being the Cathedral in Portland). The Mass was beautifully sung by a Scola assembled for the occasion and served by seminarians of the Theological College Washington DC assisted by some of our local experienced EF servers. Fr. Lariviere of the Confraternity of St. Philip Neri gave the homily. After Mass Fr. Doustou consecrated his priesthood to the Blessed Mother at the Marian altar. My oldest son and I were privileged to be able to pray this Mass with Fr. Doustou.

Here’s some good news! 1,000 people stopped the traffic in central London last Sunday for a Corpus Christi procession from Farm Street to Spanish Place. Here are the wonderful photographs. https://www.flickr.com/photos/catholicwestminster/sets/72157644936470537/

  23. wanda says:

Lucy C, Congratulations! We were blessed in Dec. with our first grandchild – a girl! Oh the joy and wonders that await you. It is a glimpse of Heaven on this side. Prayers for a safe and healthy birth and baby. It is a whole new kind of love.

  24. 18 new priests ordained this year in the Tennessee dioceses of Knoxville, Memphis, and Nashville. I believe that, on a sustained basis, the rate of ordinations in our state (sparsely populated with Catholics) is running well ahead of the rate of clerical retirements. Without even mentioning the differences in formation of the retiring and the newly ordained priests, the health and vibrancy of the Church in our state look good.

  25. ocleirbj says:

Our son and his wife had a baby girl yesterday, after a healthy full-term pregnancy. This was a change and a blessing after their first pregnancy, when she had identical twin boys at 27 weeks, and lost one at 5 months old. The surviving twin N. is 2 1/2 now, and doing very well except for some feeding problems – he still only weighs 16 lbs. His little sister starts out at 6 lb 8 oz, a far cry from his 1 1/2 lb beginning. So there is great rejoicing all around! And yes, grandchildren are wonderful!!

  26. Art says:

Just passed Technician and General class exams. Call sign pending. Just in time for Field Day!

  27. pannw says:

My family and I had a great trip to Omaha, where, last night, we watched our baseball team win the College World Series for the first time ever! Couldn’t happen to a better coach or nicer man than Tim Corbin. Go ‘Dores!

Making the long drive home now. Man, I have seen a lot of corn! And it looks very green and lush. Deo gratias. Hopefully it isn’t all for ethanol.

And Deo gratias for that news from Henry Edwards. We are blessed.

  28. Militans says:

I had a car crash today, no injuries! :)

Went to the church as soon as possible afterwards.
