My View For Awhile: Manhattan Edition

I’m off to NYC to meet some friends and have a couple of days of R&R before continuing on my way to Rome for the pilgrimage.

So far it’s a typical Delta experience: flight delayed. At least I don’t have a connecting flight.

UPDATE:

After a loooong delay we are boarding.

Hmmmm…

Finally seated:

UPDATE:

We are on the ground in Chicago after an emergency landing. Sigh. And so the delays increase along with the pointless and less than informative apologies.

Rather like a Synod briefing.

UPDATE:

They set us down at O’Hare. As it stands they are moving us all to another LGA flight at the very next gate scheduled to board in about 20 minutes. Could be worse.

You know the old story about the pessimist who says, “Things can’t possibly get any worse!”, to which the optimist responds, “Oh yes they can!”

And watch out for N873RW!

UPDATE:

Seated again.

Is this an ironic contrapasso or what? Reading about Dante….

UPDATE:

Landed. Bag arrived. Cab obtained. Tri-B and FDR zoomed.

UPDATE:

I find this building almost irresistibly photogenic. Decorated with hubcaps!

IMG_2576.JPG

Pumpkin seed brittle with a dash of cayenne. They could have used a bit more cayenne.

IMG_2570.JPG

A sampling of cheeses with friends as an afternoon snack.

One of these days I’ll find out what this surreal business is all about.

More tomorrow.

Prayers for your safe and smoother travels, Fr. Z. May extra angels go along with you and your fellow travellers.

Not a good sign when someone is poking around in the engine. Reminds me of a time at Davenport IA on a plane trying to get to Chicago and a technician came aboard and took off with one of the cockpit radios. I thought this doesn’t bode well. Sure enough a few minutes later the flight was cancelled and we all scrambled off in a huge mob to head to the rival airline ticket counter. I got lucky and got the last seat left.

Perhaps reading the Inferno might be appropriate for airline travel :)

Not a single picture of food? Perhaps due to flying on Friday…. some day I will have to look up what actual fasting entails, besides hunger.

Have a good weekend, Father Z. See you soon! ;)

Travel safely Father. And don’t sit in any of those “ebola” seats.

It is always a good sign when the bag arrives.

I’m going to voice the dissenting opinion here and say it’s great that they can and do poke around in the engine. Imagine the alternative. “Well, folks, our engine’s acting up, but the end user license agreement and the warranty both forbid us from opening it up to fix it. We’re waiting for someone at Microsoft to misunderstand our request for help and walk us through a diagnostic procedure for a completely different problem that we told them we already ruled out.”

Also, re. the pessimist and the optimist, I believe the saying goes that, “The optimist believes we live in the best of all possible worlds. The pessimist fears this is true.” At any rate, I’ve always found that a much more telling commentary on perspective than the old “glass half full” platitude — although Dilbert had an interesting take on that one.

In the U. S., fasting from food on Fridays is now, only an option. Another penitential act may be substituted at the person’s discretion.

As for fasting, there are several types or, rather, sub-categories. The current standard Church fast is defined in the Wikipedia article on fasting:

Father Z, thanks for adding the food pictures! These are, as I understand it, a requirement for eminent bloggists.

Chicken, my thanks. But I will still have to work out a regimen that is spiritually beneficial; I’d like it to be more Christian, less dieter/vegetarian. Some day I’m going to say I can’t eat meat and be ‘reassured’ that it’s free range halal.
