Cardinal Robert Sarah’s boldness in proclaiming the Gospel and resisting the Zeitgeist is a prophetic witness reminiscent of a 5th century North African Pope who laid the foundations for healthy church-state relations, Archbishop George Gänswein has said.
In a well-received speech in Rome Nov. 20 at the launch of the German edition of the book ‘God or Nothing’ — an interview with Cardinal Sarah by Nicolas Diat — the personal secretary of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI compared the cardinal favorably to Pope Gelasius I whom the Church, by coincidence, commemorated on Nov. 20.

Cardinal Sarah, Archbishop Gänswein said in closing, “is someone who loves”, a man who shows us “how and which masterpiece God wants to shape us into if we do not oppose His artist’s hands.”
During the recent Synod on the Family, Cardinal Sarah gave one of the strongest interventions of the three week meeting, comparing gender ideology and the Islamic State to “apocalyptic beasts“.

“God or Nothing” is the most brilliant and inspirational book I have read in years. It will endure as a classic of spiritual reading alongside such as “The Imitation of Christ”. Please God that he will be the next Pope.

Those who read German would do well to seek out the last book of the great historian of the papacy, Walter Ullmann: Gelasius I. (492–496): Das Papsttum an der Wende der Spätantike zum Mittelalter (Stuttgart, 1981: Anton Hiersemann). It is not a biography of Gelasius, but treats him as the culmination of the “self-image” of the papacy which had been developing ever since the time of the Emperor Constantine.
I, too am praying for the elevation of Cardinal Sarah to the Chair of Peter. It’s hard to believe he and the likes of Wuerl and Cupich are members of the same Church.
The book is ‘Temporarily Out of Stock’ at Amazon. Booo… I hope that means loads of them have already been sold!
This is interesting for several reasons, not the least of which is the obvious esteem Archbishop Ganswein has for Cardinal Sarah, of course, but also the fact that Archbishop Ganswein is perhaps eh only person in the Church who has daily access to both Pope Francis and Pope Emeritus Benedict. He may play a pivotal role in keeping Pope Francis from ultimately succumbing to Cardinal Kasper and Company.
There has been speculation in Europe that Abp Ganswein was the author of the Pope’s recent address to the German bishops, which is not typical Francis (they were criticized for ignoring doctrine!) and also much more rational and coherent than anything written for him by Forte or Kasper. It was written in German and the Pope simply read it. If you read it, you’ll note the clarity and precision of Ganswein.
I did notice that the author included the Pope’s misuse of the word “Pelagianism,” but this time the Pelagians were adhering to institutional structures. This is certainly something that has kept the German bishops fat and happy and which the Pope has ignored (the church tax and its income and connection with the State) because of Kasper, who clearly did NOT write this address.
In any case, getting back to Cdl Sarah, the comparison with Gelasius is interesting and maybe Cdl Sarah will someday have a chance to pick that name.

Archbishop Ganswein just came out with high praise for the priest who trotted out of the closet so triumphantly.

Yes Cardinal Sarah would make a wonderful Pope but don’t hold your breath. He is now a high profile Ratzingerian and as such it will face unified liberal opposition, which is growing ever stronger with each appointment by Pope Francis.

Thanks! It is a bit different in the original German. Gänswein says he “knew” Chamsara, and that he “was” brilliant, and that he, Gänswein, hadn’t realised things had developed “in this direction”, that he blames him for trying to influence the Synod, and that if Chamsara’s “life situation” isn’t according to the teachings of the Faith, he has to “draw the consequences” .
Of course the poor Father can be brilliant.

I do hope Cardinal Sarah’s book has been translated into German and that the German Bishops get to read it. They then might get to discover that Cardinal Sarah is better educated than the vast majority of European Bishops.
