Congratulations Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis: New Archbp. HEBDA

My native place has finally received an official appointment of its next Archbishop.

He has already been there for a while, the former Coadjutor of Newark, Archbishop Bernard Hebda.

He had been the Adminstrator. He is staying as Archbishop.

This is good news for the Twin Cities and beyond.

He was surprised and we were surprised. Pleasantly surprised, but surprised nonetheless. Canon 403§3 says “A coadjutor bishop possesses the right of succession.”

Is it appropriate to say Habemus Archbishop? Or viva il Archbishop?

I am glad Archbishop Hebda has officially been appointed here in the Twin Cities. I’m looking forward to seeing what the future might bring under his leadership.

May the grace of God shine through him, so he may be fruitful according to God’s will. Amen.

He is amazing. A shepherd whom you will love to pieces. We had him in Michigan. All the things he did, simply good and kind and loving. Minnesota is blessed.

  5. Southern Baron says:

Good for y’all. We in Newark are a bit bummed; everything’s up in the air now. But we were always impressed.

  6. Nan says:

He washed the feet of four men and four women tonight. He seems to have been chosen to pacify those who were against Archbishop Nienstedt and to alienate those who thought he was fine.

  7. pappy says:

I’m not sure what you think there is about Archbishop Hebda that would alienate those who thought Bishop Nienstedt was fine.

Having met the man I believe Newark’s loss is Minneapolis-St. Paul’s gain for sure.

I have family that live in the Archdiocese of Minneapolis-St. Paul and I think Archbishop-elect Hebda will do well there. I follow bishop appointments, and have read about Archbishop-elect Hebda over the years. I’m going to visit the Archdiocese in a few weeks for confirmation, and I’m wondering if Archbishop-elect Hebda or Auxiliary Bishop Andrew Cozzens will be doing confirmation. I’ve heard positive things over the years about Cozzens.

There are quite a few Sees that are planning to be vacant within the next year due to the mandatory retirement age. I’m praying particularly for good bishops to be chosen for the Diocese of Rockville Center New York, and for the Diocese of Arlington, Virginia. IMHO – I am praying that Fr. James Gould is on the short-list for the Diocese of Arlington, Virginia, he is an excellent priest.

I don’t know if my diocese will be getting a second auxiliary by the end of this year. One of our auxiliary bishops (he’s a good solid priest, I knew him when he was a parish priest and when he was on the seminary faculty) was recently selected for a diocese in Louisiana, and I’m sure the Diocese of Lafayette will be greatly blessed to have him.
