TRUMP

The corpse of Millard Fillmore can rest in peace for another 4 years.

And now let us continue to pray for these USA and also roll up our sleeves and, with grace, work hard for holiness according to our vocations.

And of course….

GO TO CONFESSION!

I suspect quite a few need to do so after this ordeal.

With votes coming in after midnight, it is fitting that the day of Trump’s “shock” victory, is the very day of the “Shock of the Church”: “Enigmatic Yet Enduring – A Homily for the Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome”

    God Speed to the President-elect.
May he not run for fear of the wolves.

  5. Markus says:

And who says that miracles do not happen and God does not answer prayers?

  6. WVC says:

I have to admit, it is hard to not spontaneously smile today. It’s like watching the Death Star blow up at the end of the first Star Wars movie. Who knows what the future holds, but at least the bad guys lost this round.

  7. gracie says:

There was a woman in tears on NPR today, reacting to the Trump win. The host was very gentle, consoling her. Turns out the woman was Gail Collins, Op-ed columnist for the New York Times. Sums up nicely how in the tank the MSM was for Clinton and what Trump had to fight through to win this election.

  8. I feel like an anvil has been lifted from my shoulders and a dark cloud removed from over my head. I have been thanking God since the news came in last night/early morning that Trump won. I had asked all the Holy Souls to pray for this country and her people, as well as the prayers all the angels and saints. Now I pray that Trump is open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. Yes, Markus, God does answer prayers.

  9. Benedict Joseph says:

No, he is not Ted Cruz — or a number of other seemingly more qualified individuals. But he spared us a tragedy of proportions unfathomed. We deliriously grateful to have been spared. Now, let us pray for Mr. Trump — may God protect him and uphold him — and that his particular “genius” will serve the cause of our God given rights very well.

  10. MikeToo says:

We need to pray for the conversion of the president elect. He said the right things to get elected but his views before candidacy were way out of aliment with Catholic social teaching.

He made some outrageous statements during the campaign. If he was just demolishing the tynary of political correctness, I applaud. The most insightful comment in this cycle came from Salenza Zito in a MSM article in the Atlantic “The press takes him literally, but not seriously; his supporters take him seriously, but not literally.”

The elite Republican establishment always said the right things too but never delivered, at the federal level, on restricting or defunding abortion. Time will tell on whether President Trump will come through.

  11. Midwest St. Michael says:

Saw this over at freerepublic and thought it was kind of funny:

Reasons for liberals to move to Mexico:

    1. The climate is much better than Canada.

    2. Plenty of Mexican food.

    3. There will be a wall built between you and President Trump.

  12. Unwilling says:

To whom, in 4 years, assuming Trump runs again, will the corpse of Millard Fillmore be preferable? Would “she” try again? Bernie? Warren?

  13. asburyfox says:

The Catholic Church will have her freedom to work in America. It’s a great blessing that it was spared Hillary’s persecution. Now we will have to rebuild the Church and work on the conversion of the country and souls.

Only Trump could have won the way he did. No other Republican could have won the rust belt. Not Bush, Paul, Cruz, Rubio, or Kasich. No other Republican or Conservative could have won Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Michigan. It was only Trump with his stances on trade, nationalism, and globalism, that could have pulled off the miracle in the rust belt.

  14. Chrisc says:

I think we should be joyful and realistic. Now is the time to move- these first 100 days with republican majorities. It is a conservative moment, and possibly a Catholic moment. But I think we should recognize Michael Moore as a kind of prophet- that a trump election was a giant middle finger to Washington, and the policies of globalism. In this regard, for many orthodox faithful, of all Christian stripes, this was a middle finger to the globalist agenda of pope Francis.

This is obviously not a healthy situation. It is a not unexpected reaction, but it is unfortunate. Now is a moment for us to serve to ameliorate this divide in our own hearts and within the catholic community. Catholicism, not Protestantism; orthodoxy, not humanitarianism; orthopraxy, not liberalism!

  15. Semper Gumby says:

Deo gratias. If I could second what pseudomodo said earlier this morning: Cubs win, Trump wins, perhaps Card. Sarah or Card. Burke as next Pope.

semperficatholic and asburyfox et al: Well said.

  16. basis says:

I don’t think Ted Cruz is more qualified. He speaks very well and is by rep a great lawyer. On the other hand, he has never run an organization and is thoroughly disliked by his fellow senators.

  18. Dad of Six says:

All of the prayers of the last several weeks need to be continued for the President elect. I plan on offering a Te Deum at Adoration today.

Now, let’s get to work fellow Catholics. The ball is in our court!

  20. thomas777 says:

I am very happy for the non-Hillary election result. I would now like to remind you that God’s plan for fixing this is a minor chastisement, not a trump election. We are now entering the darkest part of the night. Hillary is personally threatened with jail and the Dems live in the certainty of losing everything they have gained in the last 8 years. If they might lose it all then any action is justified. I would recommend another rosary novena for the next 60 days. Storm heaven with your prayers in this the darkest part of the night.
If bad presidents have pardoned 1000’s of people to make a name for themselves what will hil-oma and company do now that they are losing it all? Pray friends. Don’t stop now. This is NOT OVER.

  21. thomas777 says:
Don’t stop now. This is NOT OVER.

    You’ve made good points.

One of my correspondents sent the text:

“We have to brace for an avalanche of devastating executive orders, pardons, and last minute regs now.”

Of course what can be done with a single signature, can be undone with a signature. Still, there is time to do a lot of damage.

  22. tealady24 says:

I am elated! We need a business man to run this country, not the beholden- to- every- special- interest politician!! You see what this is costing us! And the MSM I hope and pray will wither away like the DEPLORABLES they all are! And our President-elect needs our prayers more than ever!

  23. PTK_70 says:

@WVC..If this were a movie, it might be called “The Return of the Reagan Democrats”.

What will the Trump/Pence triumph be called? “Brexit plus plus plus” is a bit cumbersome. Maybe, “Move On 2.0”?

  24. APX says:

Meanwhile in Canada the Canadian Immigration Centre’s web site crashed from over 10 million Americans want to immigrate to Canada to escape Trump. Maybe we could set up an exchange program. Those of us in Canada not happy with Trudeau, could swap spots with Americans not happy with Trump.

  25. PA mom says:

This is quite amazing. We are delighted, astonished and relieved.

This is an opportunity for our country, though it is clear, the “structures” that we usually rely on are not what got it done. The regular people got it done, this was grassroots in astonishing measure.

An important lesson is that this is what is needed! The condition of our country and it’s decaying institutions is not something to be noticed and dealt with every four years. There must be a sustained effort to pray for the conversion of sinners, to effectively communicate conservatism in its political and spiritual forms, and to hold feet to the fire and have our concerns heardby those in positions of temporal power.

So pray and MAGA, each of us where we are and how we can!

  26. Legisperitus says:

I believe congratulations are in order, Father. Was this result not one of Fr. Z’s predictions for 2016?

[RIGHT! I had only predicted that he would be the nominee, but, hey!]

    Fr. Z's Gold Star Award

  27. baileymxd says:

The good Lord has staunched the bleeding. I personally vow to take action and play a bigger part in the pro-life movement and evangelization efforts of my city.

  28. Adeodataomnia says:

Rejoicing with all of you at the prospects of a Clinton defeat, and a Trump victory.

However, we must not grow complacent. The MSM has record low social credit, and so does the elite intelligentsia. Now is the time for Ex Corde Ecclesiae, to take back our schools and universities which promote the Judeo-Christian worldview! Politics is downstream from culture.

  29. A nominal Republican president and a nominally Republican Congress now have four years to prove to moral conservatives that they aren’t just full of hot air, or they should be tossed out on their ears. They don’t have Democrats to blame any more. They need to start rolling back the damage of decades of rampant liberal judicial activism instead of just holding the status quo (which is unacceptably evil). Stare decisis doesn’t cut it any more. They could start with a simple majority vote that defines conception as the start of human life and marriage as the union of one man and one woman and removes abortion and the definition of marriage from the jurisdiction of the courts. Appointing “conservative” justices and waiting for them to undo their own mess is not acceptable.

  30. JohnNYC says:

I am relieved that Killary Klinton and the leftist MSM was defeated. DEO GRATIAS!
Now perhaps if we storm the heavens God will send us a Pope who is catholic. :-)

  31. Filipino Catholic says:

The war is only just beginning. From the looks of all the loud protests and the trending slogan “Not My President”, certain segments of people are legitimately terrified of the idea of a Trump presidency — especially many of the millennials. Make no mistake, they will fight back, and not all of them will have the discernment to distinguish the wheat from the cockle. I have had the displeasure of reading one distraught person’s blog post about how she was renouncing Christianity because of Trump’s election, but then again the social media site in question is a haven for those millennials highly inclined to social justice.

  32. Jenson71 says:

Andrew Saucci, what exactly do you think would change by a simple majority vote that defined conception as the start of human life and marriage as the union of one man and one woman? In the former, it wouldn’t do a thing to current abortion jurisprudence, which is now all about undue burdens placed on the mother prior to viability of the baby. With the latter, the Court has been clear that Congress does not have the power to contradict the Court’s determination of the substantive rights of the 14th Amendment.

  33. Jenson71:

From Article III, section 2 of the US Constitution:
“In all cases affecting ambassadors, other public ministers and consuls, and those in which a state shall be party, the Supreme Court shall have original jurisdiction. In all the other cases before mentioned, the Supreme Court shall have appellate jurisdiction, both as to law and fact, with such exceptions, and under such regulations as the Congress shall make. (emphasis mine)

Congress can simply remove the Supreme Court’s jurisdiction on any matter, and the Court has nothing to say about it. The problem is that no one believes that the courts are an equal branch of government any more– they have become a super branch. When people focus on the appointment of Supreme Court justices, they buy into this notion (a notion loved by liberals who couldn’t deconstruct society through the legislative process) when the real problem is that the court system is in desperate need of a smackdown by the legislative branch. This is one of those ideas that has not been tried and found lacking; rather, it has not been tried because of legislative cowardice. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are more than happy to toss abortion, same-sex “marriage,” health care, and other controversial things to the courts and then say, “Supreme Court locuta est; causa finita est.

In any case, while I would love to see Mr. Trump and his followers pleasantly surprise us, I am not optimistic. If I am wrong about him, I’ll be happy to come back here in four years and say so. We need a 180-degree turn, not a four or eight-year mere reprieve from things getting worse so that another Hilary Clinton-type can simply pick up where Obama left off without having lost any ground. Trump and Congress need to be held accountable by moral conservatives in 2020 or they need to be replaced, with a new party if necessary.

  34. Jenson71 says:

Andrew Saucci, take a look at the first two clauses of Sec. 2 of Art. III: “The judicial power shall extend to all cases, in law and equity, arising under this Constitution, [and] the laws of the United States…” The Constitution gives a broad jurisdiction to the courts — and on the face of it, that makes sense, right? You wouldn’t think the Constitution says, “The courts hear controversies, even those created by Congress, except those which Congress says it can’t hear,” because what would then stop Congress from always passing a law that includes a provision that says the courts can’t question its constitutionality? And that would pretty much wipe out the idea of the judiciary being an equal branch.

[For why state laws affecting state citizens can be reviewed (and this is generally where abortion falls in) include the 14th Amendment’s first section in our analysis]

Your clause talks about when the Supreme Court (not even discussing federal courts in general) has to take a case right away or hears it after lower courts have heard the case. Your emphasized portion shows that Congress can create laws that open up more cases to “original jurisdiction” (or, cases heard right away). And under that grant of authority, a few Acts over the years have included provisions that have a “fast-track” to the Supreme Court, and therefore don’t have to go through the appellate process. But your section in no way suggests that Congress can simply remove a topic or area of activity beyond the Supreme Court’s review if it is indeed related to a Constitutional right.
