LENTCAzT 2018 23 – Thursday in the 3rd Week of Lent: “We went to the torture room in a kind of solemn procession…”

Today is Thursday in the 3rd Week of Lent.   The Roman Station is Sts. Cosmas and Damien.

In gratitude especially to benefactors who help me and this blog, during Lent I’m once again offering 5 minute daily podcasts to encourage you in your own use of this holy season.

Today we hear from 16th c. Jesuit Fr. John Gerard’s The Autobiography of a Hunted Priest

US HERE – UK HERE

John Gerard, SJ was one of the most feared and hunted Catholic priests during the most vicious years of anti-Catholic persecution.  He actually escaped from the Tower of London and continued his missions… and survived.   His superiors ordered him to write his autobiography.  He died at the age of 73 in Rome at the English College.  The CIA even wrote about his clandestine tradecraft.

If these podcasts are useful to you and yours, perhaps you might consider making a donation [Today, the 8th day of the month is a very thin day for subscribed donations.]

    Thanks, Father!

I loved reading this book. It was sent to me about six months ago. It is a thrilling account of a valiant priest and I found it very comforting…yes comforting. It stimulated my Faith and after reading it I rejoiced at the stoicism and tenacity which Fr. John Gerard exhibited. True, he was not a martyr but because he escaped martyrdom surely should not mean that he was less of a priest!!!

  3. Does this mean he could one day be the patron saint of those in the “clandestine services”?

[He be now! Will we ever know for sure?]

  4. Joe in Canada says:

God bless the Jesuits! Tomorrow (March 9) is the 450th anniversary of the (natural) birth of St Aloysius Gonzaga SJ. Through the intercession of all the Jesuit saints may the Society of Jesus be a light of the Gospel to the world!

  5. The Egyptian says:

    just ordered it sounds good

Thanks for all your efforts in making these LENTCAzTs, Father. You are one of the main reasons I still use an iPhone.

The accounts of tortures and sufferings are splash of cold water for us.

Perhaps future LENTCAzTs and ADVENTCAzTs can give even more extracts of martyrologies. Weren’t they required reading for religious at one time?

    Anyway, thank you again.
