  1. I talked about the meaning of Jesus being baptized by John: nb, not sacramental baptism, but an expression of repentance for sins. As if Jesus got in line for confession! He did it in total solidarity with us. He is the new Adzm, the obedient son. I explained the connection to the Cross, and our baptism, and our vocation. And, I stressed that the words, “I am well pleased” apply also to us.

  2. Gregg the Obscure says:

Father reminded those of us who are Godparents to examine our consciences regarding that responsibility.

close paraphrase: if all Godparents worked diligently to pass the faith on to their Godchildren, this Mass and every Mass would be full. Our Catholic schools would be full. Our seminaries and convents would be full.

It especially hit home as this was the worst attendance I’ve seen at the parish for a Sunday Mass other than on days with extremely bad weather. Also hit home because this priest (a retired priest who helps with a few Sunday Masses) is habitually cheerful.

  3. Prayerful says:

Fr recalled an anecdote from the time of his ordination in the sixties. An old woman who raised a large family in a one roomed flat in Gardiner St exclaimed aloud her annoyance at the fanciful sermon on the Holy Family given by a renowned preacher. Fr said her annoyance expressed in a way how how Divine love is manifested in families through the great efforts made in raising them.

  4. Julia_Augusta says:

Feast of the Holy Family Sermon (Missa Cantata) in Singapore: Father urged us to make God the center of our families and spoke of his own childhood in a “kampong” (village) in Singapore (which was at that time still part of Malaysia) where families prayed the Rosary everyday and held processions of Our Lady of Fatima from house to house. He said that his small kampong produced the former Archbishop of Singapore, the current Archbishop of Singapore and at the time he was at seminary, 13 seminarians! Devout families are the source of vocations.

Msgr talked about the importance of our baptismal day — how many of us know the date and celebrate it? He quoted St. Louis IX, along the lines of his baptism being the most important event, esp compared to when he became king, as the baptismal date began an everlasting time not bound here on Earth. (An extra special example here in St. Louis, MO.) Msgr also encouraged us to know the priest who baptized us, and keep him in a special place in our prayers.

  6. iPadre says:

I talked about Baptism, but was suddenly moved to take a turn to talk about John the Baptist. He was a man of holiness and humility. The two go together. On can’t be holy and have pride. He fulfilled his two fold mission of preaching repentance and pointing to the Lamb of God. If he were seeking self interest, he could have said: “Yes, I’m the one, I’m the messiah.” But in his humility pointed to the Lord. I then related this to the priest. We are called to be humble in our administration of the Sacraments. It’s not about the priest, it’s not about the people. The Sacred Liturgy of the Mass is about Jesus Christ. We are to point to Him. If we change the words, it becomes about us. If we entertain, it becomes about us. The priest is to give what he has been given by the Church and not make it up as he goes along. I gave the example of the priest at a chapel in Boston who baptized in the name of the Creator, the Redeemer and the Sanctifier. Later the Vatican declared all of his baptisms invalid and required re-baptism. A Mass I attended where the priest changed the words of consecration leaving the Mass invalid and false worship of bread. This is why the priest must be humble, to say and do what the Church has given. In this he becomes like John: “Behold the Lamb of God.”

Our Priest (NO MASS) spoke about the March for Life being this weekend and on the evil of abortion and he asked us all to contact our representives in NYS state senate about the Reproductive Health Act. And he spoke about building a culture of faith and we renewed our baptismal vows.

  8. Chris Garton-Zavesky says:

People who think Jesus was somehow unaware that He is God have….. (how did he put it….) a misunderstanding of the Gospel.

He also posed the question: Why didn’t Jesus simply show up as a 30 yr old man. There were many good facets to the answer, one of which was that He was teaching us about the Trinity by being born into a family.
