“He [Satan] will set up a counter-Church which will be the ape of the Church because, he the devil, is the ape of God. It will have all the notes and characteristics of the Church, but in reverse and emptied of its divine content. It will be a mystical body of the anti-Christ that will in all externals resemble the mystical body of Christ. In desperate need for God, whom he nevertheless refuses to adore, modern man in his loneliness and frustration will hunger more and more for membership in a community that will give him enlargement of purpose, but at the cost of losing himself in some vague collectivity.”
“Who is going to save our Church? Not our bishops, not our priests and religious. It is up to you, the people. You have the minds, the eyes, and the ears to save the Church. Your mission is to see that your priests act like priests, your bishops act like bishops.”
- Fulton Sheen

"But if, in any layman who is indeed imbued with literature, ignorance of the Latin language, which we can truly call the 'catholic' language, indicates a certain sluggishness in his love toward the Church, how much more fitting it is that each and every cleric should be adequately practiced and skilled in that language!" - Pius XI
"Let us realize that this remark of Cicero (Brutus 37, 140) can be in a certain way referred to [young lay people]: 'It is not so much a matter of distinction to know Latin as it is disgraceful not to know it.'" - St. John Paul II
Grant unto thy Church, we beseech Thee, O merciful God, that She, being gathered together by the Holy Ghost, may be in no wise troubled by attack from her foes. O God, who by sin art offended and by penance pacified, mercifully regard the prayers of Thy people making supplication unto Thee, and turn away the scourges of Thine anger which we deserve for our sins. Almighty and Everlasting God, in whose Hand are the power and the government of every realm: look down upon and help the Christian people that the heathen nations who trust in the fierceness of their own might may be crushed by the power of thine Arm. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. R. Amen.

Each homily in Easter season was about one of the sacraments. Today I talked about confirmation. Just as Ascension (observed today here) is closely tied to Pentecost, so baptism and confirmation go together. I explained why our Lord said it was better that he ascend, and then send the Holy Spirit, and then I explained confirmation first in relation to baptism, and then in reference to the bishop’s words, “BE SEALED with the gift of the Holy Spirit.” I used the examples of sealing an envelope and sealing a document, as genuine and ready. I talked to the younger children, not co firmed, telling them to get ready. I told the rest that their confirmation means, “no excuses.” We are “ready” to be witnesses.
This Sunday our Parish celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving for one of our parishioners who was ordained a Priest yesterday and today he celebrated his first mass with us. As is customary, the newly ordained did not give a homily, but rather our regular pastor. In his sermon, he emphasized the role of the priest and how without a priest there is no mass or Eucharistic celebration. He quoted JPII who famously said “A priest prolongs the presence of Christ.”
An important thing to remember in a time when the priests and the priesthood are under attack. The devil hates us all, but he hates priests most of all. I am praying for the newly ordained Fr. Peter and for all priests who have recently been ordained and for those who have long been in service to the Church. And of course for more vocations. Our parish has been blessed, as we also celebrated the vocation of one of our women to consecrated life with the Sisters of Life.
Ascension Thursday Sunday.
Christ is no longer physically present in the world as an individual, but He is present everywhere in us, as His Body the Church. We are witnesses to Him just as much as the first apostles were. When people look at us, we should be seen to be living in such a way as to point them to Jesus. If we aren’t, but fall into disobedience and sin – this is Scandal, and may even make people turn away from Jesus. Be faithful witnesses!
Ascension Thursday Sunday here in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
Father preached that once Our Lord ascended into heaven then the real heavy lifting for us on earth began. We need to both adore Our Lord who ascended into heaven and look up at the heavens but like the angels in white – ask ourselves why are we staring at the sky? – go out and praise the Lord and bring him to this world in need of him by our actions, our words and our reception of the sacraments.
7th Sunday of Easter
Father spoke about Stephen and the challenges of discipleship.
Today was the Seventh Sunday of Easter, as we are in the northeast USA. We had the first Mass of a newly ordained priest. He did preach the homily, and it was about the necessity of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. How Jesus prayed that we would be one, not divided, and that the Catholic Faith is the Church He founded.
Like Our Lord’s disciples, we question why He had to ascend to Heaven rather than remain always on earth after His Resurrection. (This was one of the difficulties I had to confront in the early years after my reversion.) For Him to have remained on earth would, among other things, have robbed us of the merits we gain through practicing the virtues of Faith and Hope.
Today was the first Sunday after Ascension Thursday. Beautiful TLM Masses.
Today was Sunday after Ascension at our FSSP parish. A Sung High Mass and the choir was spot on good. Father’s sermon was very powerful on the importance of a good confession. Finished the morning singing the Regina Caeli.
This was Sunday after the Ascension (in the OF it would have been 7th Sunday of Easter as the Thursday is not transferred here). Confirmation in the EF was conferred after Mass by the auxiliary.
Sunday after Ascension at the local FSSP parish. In other places within the Diocese it would have been 7th Sunday of Easter.
Father talked about the notion of this ten day period before Pentecost as a sort of limbo. We can find these I’m our lives too. Rather than getting stuck in inaction, we ought to still try to do God’s will even when it isn’t totally clear. Father also distinguished Hope from Faith, citing Aquinas.
7th Sunday of Easter, or the Sunday after the Ascension (that’s what my 1962 missal said). Father talked about the Three Theological Virtues, which came from explaining that we are preparing for Pentecost by praying the novena like the Apostles did. He said we should be asking the Holy Spirit to help us understand the fruits and gifts of Confirmation, but to focus specifically on the three most important virtues, especially charity. I really like how he stated that hope and faith will no longer be necessary in heaven, but love is the only one that would remain. He talked about those who are “sincere”, but not in the right faith. Sincerity does not get you to Heaven. Belief in the One, True Faith does.
Novus Ordo Sunday after Ascension (Omaha, NE). One of our deacons preached, observing that unity in itself is neither good nor bad. It is a fact. We could be united in an evil pursuit, as people often are. Rather, it matters in what and in Whom we are united. Unity for its own sake should not be sought, especially at the expense of the Truth. We must be united to our Lord and His Church through the Sacraments, which is what our Lord’s prayer in the Gospel reading was about.
