ANSA: Article about yesterday’s meeting

This is in from ANSA.  It is about yesterday’s meeting of Card Bertone and bishops from around the world for the MP.

Here are the highlights:

1) They fall into the trap of calling this "the Latin Mass".
2) The MP will be sent to bishops around the world during the next week.
3) The Pope spoke with the gathered bishops for an hour for discussion.
4) ANSA suggests there were 15 or so bishops, rather than 30.
5) Card. Ruini (Vicar of Rome) and Archbp. Bagnasco (Pres. of Italian Bishops Conference) were there.
6) Cardinals Lehman (Germany), Cormac Murphy O’ Connor (England), O’Malley (USA), Barbarin (France), and Bp. Koch (Switzerland) were there. [UPDATE: In a different article I read that Jean Pierre Card. Ricard of Bordeaux was there too.]
7) This concerns use of the 1962 Missale Romanum.
8) The promulgation of the MP will probably be "within a few days".
9) There will be an indication of when the MP goes into effect.
10) The piece probably mistakenly suggests that the older rite "will be on the same level" as the Novus Ordo.

We heard from our pastor that Archbishop Burke was in Rome yesterday. I don’t know if he was at the meet.ing

    Father,
You say that ANSA report states that the Classical Rite will probably be,”at the same level” as the Novus Ordo, and that they are probably mistaken in saying this.
What level is the older rite at?

  3. cb says:

Msgr. Kurt Koch (bishop of Basel) is not a cardinal. Switzerland has only one cardinal, Henri Schwery, the (retired) bishop of Sitten/Sion in the Kanton Wallis/Valaise.

  4. “messale promulgato da Giovanni XXIII nel 1962” Yes, I like that!

I think we should work to have the “Mass of John XXIII” used in the press as the name for the liturgy to be freed up by the Motu Proprio. There is something really charming about having that as the name for the traditional liturgy in popular use.

  5. Fr. Augustine: There is also a delicious touch of irony there.

  6. Cerimoniere says:

This reminds me of a priest friend of mine, who used to say that if he were ever elected Pope, he would restore the coronation ceremony by saying that he wished to inaugurate his pontificate with the same ceremonies used by the glorious Pope of the Council, John XXIII!

As you say, Father, it is quite deliciously ironical in the sense that everyone and everything associated with Vatican II is so divorced in the popular mind from the traditional liturgy. However, it makes a very straightforward point at the same time: the 1962 Missal represents the state of the Roman Mass prescribed by Bd. John XXIII, and those of us who are attached to it have every right to claim his approval as those who prefer the Novus Ordo have to claim the approval of Paul VI and John Paul II.

  7. danphunter1 says:

The older missal must be elevated above the Novus Ordo Missal.

  8. Cerimoniere says:

I think they will find their own level, once they (that is to say, we) are given the freedom for that to happen. The Holy Father is not going to prefer one over the other openly, but he doesn’t need to.

  9. Ian says:

I’m pretty sure that the level of the 1962 missal is mandated by the rubrics.

Whether it is level with, higher, or lower than the Novus Ordo missal really depends on how high the Novus Ordo priest feels like holding his missal.

“sullo stesso piano” — che gioia!

  11. Dan says:

I posted too soon — Father Z. says the “sullo stesso piano” is probably mistaken. I suppose it is mistaken in view of the expected the “ordinary” versus “extraordinary” labels? [something that I confess I really don’t understand]

Le Missal de 1969 dans la lune

  13. Tom S. says:

Actually, if memory serves me right, the British journalist who wrote the article on this subject some months ago made a comment, either in the article or in her blog, that one of the changes that had been made was that the designation of “extraordinary” was removed from the document. I’d post the links, but have a class to teach. Perhaps someone else can run this down?

  14. swmichigancatholic says:

We need to let this “ranking” thing go and avoid the rancor. The classical mass will find it’s own place soon enough.

  15. swmichigan: The classical mass will find it’s own place soon enough.

There must be grace informed “market forces” in matter like this.
