US Federal law requires people who want to purchase a firearm, hand gun or longer-barreled, not only to show government issued photo identification, but also to undergo a background check!
Is that more demanding than what is required simply to vote? How many of you routinely undergo a criminal background check when you go to the polls?

I think he was referring to the more recent blatant attempts at voter suppression in places like Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Wisconsin and a handful of other places. Granted voter suppression is not just about racial suppression, but also effects youth and the poor.
Indeed there are people who have voted for decades without difficulty upon whom are imposed great restrictions to voting, especially the elderly and rural poor. I doubt that the dear elderly black woman that I witnesses last October at the BMV trying to jump through hoops to get a state ID would have no interest in buying an assault weapon.
The speaker of the house in Pennsylvania is on record, on video, bragging about how newly imposed voter suppression laws would help Romney in P.A. There can be no doubt that legal disenfranchisement is the paramount concern of republic legislators all across the land.

I watched a news report yesterday that said we in the U.S. can buy “automatic” weapons online…lol. Im sure it was just an innocent oversight (yea ok) but they forgot to mention that law abiding americans can buy semi-auto firearms online, the gun gets shipped to an FFL and you still get the background check.

I was wondering what he was talking about. Apparently one person’s voter suppression is another person’s voter fraud elimination.
You know, things like photo id, throwing out random votes when people don’t sign their precinct’s pollbook on Election Day (in other words, when there are more ballots than people), requiring absentee ballots to contain the full address of the person submitting the ballot.
Apparently, these changes “suppress votes.”
I remember the last presidential election. My daughter was at school away from home, and was voting from there, but her name was still on the precinct list. Anyone could have voted in her name.

This voter ID is so long over due it is absurd.
The only thing it stands to suppress is voter fraud. And maybe the occasional person who doesn’t want to bother with the trouble of getting a free ID. I am not sympathic toward those who do not want to take the time to get a free ID and wait maybe 45 min. It is worth the trouble. I think everyone should be required to work at polls at least once in their life to get an idea of how easy it is to walk in and commit voter fraud.

Who doesn’t get IDs? You have to have an ID to be e-verified, to drive, to buy alcohol, etc. How in the world is there people who don’t get a free ID?

I would just like to add one other point. When a person registers to vote, they must prove, via identification, who they are. If this is done via mail, registration, they show their ID, which we accept lots of forms, the first time they register.
If a person comes in to the poll to vote and something doesn’t match – a 40 posing as a 90 yr voter, I have to allow that person to vote as to not disenfranchise them. That is more important than fraud. The most I can do is contest the vote which will be judged LATER if the vote should count. Just guess how long investigations take? Years.
If they were able to register to begin w, then they should have no problem getting that free ID. And if they valued security of their vote, they would inconvenience themselves with whatever it takes to make sure no fraud is happening.

And the above re registration is PROVIDED those doing the registering are requiring what is NEEDED to be VALIDLY registered (proven you are who you say you are).
Now, if those who go door to door are not doing this, then that voter MAY have a problem proving who they are or they may not. But we should focus our anger on those who are doing it incorrectly and not at the voters. And this whole Voter ID would clear that up too. If they provide free transportation to the polls, the least they should do is extend a ride to the DMV so they can get this.

The last time I voted I was asked for an ID. Little did I know that it was attempt to prevent me from voting.
At the library the other day, a woman in front of me was trying quite desperately to convince the library lady to give her a card even though she had no identification in the name she was attempting to register under. No deal, photo ID, she was told.
Photo ID to get a library book in this State, but to vote? No, that would be too onerous.

It’s probably generational. The priestly vocation probably started becoming less attractive to cultural centrists and progressives around 30 years ago. If you did a study I suspect you would find most priests ordained in the last 20 or so years are registered under the rnc.
Also I suspect that by far church benefactors tend to be more wealthy and rnc members, and to some extend the clergy need to coddle their constituency accordingly.

Yeah well a great democracy doesn’t make it easy for people to slaughter their own children in the womb to the tune of tens of millions, Bill.
I do not even care about this stuff anymore.
Sure I know this is an important issue that I have my opinions about it that I will exercise at the voting booth and maybe even casually speak about from time-to-time in a non-religious setting. But I cannot be obsessed with politics anymore.
I am not saying this necessarily applies anyone/everyone who takes an interest in politics, nor am I implying this about anyone on this blog. But I firmly believe a major tactic of satan is to have us all get wrapped up in politics, and have that always be on our mind instead of our Savior Jesus Christ.
Just ask yourself, what do people follow today, the religion of politics, or the religion of Christ?
What is more on people’s minds?
Look at how passionate people get about politics. Wouldn’t it be nice if they were to get that passionate about Christ?
Ask people who claim to be Christian about their alleged faith, and in so many cases they are very subdued and careful not to make any waves. But ask them about their opinion on the latest hot button political issue, and they come out of their shell and become very passionate. It is a staggering contrast that I cannot help but believe satan must be very pleased with.
What makes this even more sad is that all the so-called “news” is anymore is just blatant propaganda, wherein people merely tune in to the specific flavor of propaganda they want to hear. Yet even what appears to be different flavors of propaganda, are all just a carefully crafted illusions to subtly prompt people to come to the same desired conclusions anyway.
To even watch it anymore is an insult.
But more importantly, how does any of it help or pertain to souls getting into heaven?
Isn’t it so obvious that satan must be loving how focused on politics we are these days instead of Christ and His Church (the Catholic Church)?

As for me, I choose the religion of Christ, not the religion of politics.
The problem with requiring ID is that, if you don’t already have ID, it’s almost impossible to get ID. (Try getting a copy of your birth certificate without showing some form of ID, for example.) I almost ran up against this when time came for my oldest daughter to get a driver’s license. She had been home schooled, so she never got a school ID, and she waited until she was 18 to get her driver’s license. We discovered that, because she was under 19, her birth certificate, and my certification that she was who she said she was (together with my ID) were sufficient, but if we’d waited until she was 19, she would have been in a bad way, because the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles would have required *two* proofs of identity (plus proof of legal presence, plus proof of Virginia residency), and it would have been difficult if not impossible to assemble all those documents. (Looking over the DMV website, I see that a social security card is now accepted as a second proof of identify. I don’t believe that was the case when she was applying. And if she’d lost her social security card, she’d be SOL, as a birth certificate is not an accepted form of ID for getting a replacement social security card.)
Bill Clinton has always been a devil. In fact, I remember listening to Art Bell interview Malachi Martin about the topic of demonic possession, and in particular, perfect possession. Martin said that you cannot help anyone who is perfectly possessed, because they made a definitive and final choice to serve the evil one. He said they were in all walks of life but especially in positions of power. Bell suddenly asked Martin if he thought Clinton was perfectly possessed. Martin answered in a way that he wanted to say yes, but was very cautious. I wonder what Malachi Martin would think about Obama?

Honestly, frjim, you could go to work for MSNBC with the slant you give most everything you post here. Voter suppression laws…what a load of manure. They are voter FRAUD laws. The ones suppressing votes are the D’s using NBP party members, or promoting fraud like the AFL-CIO threatening to sue anyone working at polls in Florida who questions someone’s voter eligibility. What about the 4 Democrats with ties to ACORN who were convicted in NY for falsifying absentee ballots for Obama, or the 4 Democrats in Indiana convicted of fraud… 10 people in Milwaukee charged… etc. etc…. And who controlled the Congress? Clinton came into office in 1993 with D’s holding both houses. Anyone remember the Republican Revolution of November 1994? Yeah, Newt Gingrich and company can be credited with most of that economy.
I am in no way defending the former president’s remarks, but I’m going to take a stab at it and guess that he was referring to private gun sales. No background check, 4473, or ID is required for any private sale within your state as long as you are not shipping it. Anything shipped must go *to* a licensed gun dealer (FFL) where an ID and background check are required and an ATF 4473 must be completed before the firearm can be picked up.

Item: With respect to Fr. Jim 4321, I live in Wisconsin. Voter fraud has been a serious issue, especially in the Milwaukee area. State ID’s are free and easily obtainable. The suppression going on in Wisconsin is the suppression of the Left, trying to stifle freedom of speech, and to defraud the system.
Bill Clinton is trying to become the first former President to become the first -“first husband” so he and Hillary can continue implementing the disastrous policies being pushed now.
He needs the voter fraud to continue in order to be sure “they” will be elected..

I live in North Carolina, and yes, voter fraud exists. I saw it with my own two eyes in 2008. I was a volunteer poll watcher, and saw county election officials “help” people vote who hadn’t voted (by their own admission)since the 1970’s.
What is the statistical probability that 59 Philadelphia precincts returned NO votes for Romney in 2012?

I have been feeling a tug to run for office, I even have those close by who would support such a venture, but My first concern is absolutely my faith and preserving that faith in and through my family. I do not want to allow myself to be caught up ‘over there’ while the evil one is left to work on my family over here.
So, for now, it is no.
And another thing….I sure hope the elderly black lady and the rural poor brought up in frjim’s tale never have to purchase cold medicine or need to fly on a plane, because you have to have an ID for that. It depends on what is meant by “debt”. The cooperation between Clinton and the Repub Congress certainly minimized deficit spending, but there was more to it than that. Changes in the way deficits are financed (e.g., with long term bonds) and capital gains tax (assets are sold when the owners anticipate an increase) also can bring deficits down–but they are temporary benefits.
Although prosperity is usually measured in employment and GDP growth, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t debt in the economy that will eventually show up in govt deficit spending. There was debt in the system under Clinton (e.g., trade deficits and economic bubbles), but it took a few yars to find its way into the federal budget.
Instead of voter ID cards you could, as a substitute require a full set of fingerprints to be taken at the voting booth. they could automatically be crosschecked at other polling stations as well as for multiple attempts and then,if fraud did occur you would have not only evidence, but also statistics, not to mention the obvious deterrent in the first place.
