Card. Bevilacqua – RIP

I had heard last night that Anthony Card. Bevilacqua had died.  He was Archbishop emeritus of Philadelphia.  There are now articles available (e.g., here).

He was 88 years old.

Requiescat in pace.

Yes, I just noticed this on Spirit Daily.
May His Eminence rest in peace.

  4. Joseph-Mary says:

And the hatred against the Catholic Church is so great that just this past week it was decided that this dying man who apparently also suffered from dementia was competent to be questioned by secular authorities on their quest for victims of alleged abuses.

I guess God had other plans and called him home. R.I.P.

We will pray for him. He was the Cardinal that confirmed us in 1999 when we entered (returned in my case) the One True Church.

And all the yapping jackals on the morning boob tube snoozecasts in the Philly area could talk about was….wait for it….the abuse scandal. No word about his work to help the marginalized, his long years of dedication to His Church, his gentle demeanor and willingness to be a good shepherd.

It’s always titillation, sex, and scandal. No matter what.

You know, I know we’re supposed to pray for those who persecute us, but, at some point…is it a sin to pray that their eyes be opened or shut forever?

  7. He confirmed me and my classmates in the early 80’s in Pittsburgh. I was scared to death, but I answered a question correctly and was fine after that! RIP.

I was just going to remark on this but I see that Joseph-Mary above beat me to it: A judge ruled he was healthy enough to testify in the sex abuse cases and within days, he dies. God has mysterious ways.

Cardinal Bevilacqua was the vicar general of the diocese of Brooklyn in the 1970’s. I know this because I have read materials about that dubious apparition known as Bayside, and they always point the gun at him for statements there was a thorough investigation of the alleged visions, when they say there was not.

I don’t think it was necessary to have an extensive investigation of messages which say that test tube babies dont’ have souls! I don’t agree with IVF, but I know young teenage girl conceived in such a manner, who has a strong Catholic faith.

To turn our attention to more plesanter things, when he was archbishop of Philly, he devied the concept of innovative Masses for fallen-away Catholics! Letter drops would be done in a particular area, inviting lasped Catholics to attend special services of reconciliation. People came back to the Church who had been away for 20, 30 even 40 years! Some of them said nobody had ever inquired of them after they left.

Regarding his role in alleged cover ups, we leave this in God’s hands whatever wrong doingo there was, for the record I just wanted to point out some good things he had done.
