Feeder feed

While I have been writing an article and fixing a computer and doing may other things, the feeder has been SUPER busy today.

The Goldfinch Eating Team is DEMOLISHING socks full of thistle seed.

You can almost see the level dropping.

Many female Orioles around still.

A little while later.

This male Oriole has not yet gone south.

They are relentless.  Remember… they eat by your donations.

In this photo there are two immature male Red-breasted Grosbeaks.

The males are scarce right now.  I have lots of females.  I haven’t seen a mature male Grosbeak for a long time.

Getting a snoot-full of grape jelly.

A female Grosbeak.

The Orioles are at present locked in a cage match with the wasps, which also want that jelly.

I saw a hummingbird chase one around yesterday.

I have been at my desk a lot in the last couple days, and the birds have provided a great source of good distraction and refreshment of soul.

  1. I’m glad the birds helped. They always make my day better too.

I think the birds here are going into eating overdrive. They know winter is coming.

I can’t keep my thistle sock full either Father. The Goldfinches are really going to it!

  4. Father: Are you going to feed them over the winter?

  5. Cathy: If the donations come I will feed them when I am here and ask others to watch them when I am not.

Father, I am seeing lots of goldfinches this year too, in a feeding frenzy, demolishing the black oil seed every few days. But I never knew that grape jelly would be an attraction! Where did you find the neat orange (and jelly) holder that you use? I can’t find one at Agway or in our local lawn / feed stores. I love watching my birds, and I enjoy the squirrels too, baffled as they are. Once in a while nature steps in however; I saw a small woodpecker nabbed right off the feeder by a hawk, and last week a fox caught one of the squirrels. Prayers to St. Francis for all God’s creatures.

“Refreshment of soul” is a good description, Father! We have said so often that the pictures of these beautiful creatures make us smile. I’m no expert at all, but what I have seen here in So.Cal. must be an Oriole. The coloring is gorgeous. I have seen a nest and it is a work of art – a beautiful basket shape.

Speaking of feeders, in Saturday’s Irish Times “Eye on nature” column (where readers send in observations and questions) a reader sent in the following: “A grey squirrel, which visits my bird feeders regularly, has removed one of them and wedged it in an angle of the branches higher up the tree”

I enjoy your pictures so very much. Keep up the good work.
