“He [Satan] will set up a counter-Church which will be the ape of the Church because, he the devil, is the ape of God. It will have all the notes and characteristics of the Church, but in reverse and emptied of its divine content. It will be a mystical body of the anti-Christ that will in all externals resemble the mystical body of Christ. In desperate need for God, whom he nevertheless refuses to adore, modern man in his loneliness and frustration will hunger more and more for membership in a community that will give him enlargement of purpose, but at the cost of losing himself in some vague collectivity.”
“Who is going to save our Church? Not our bishops, not our priests and religious. It is up to you, the people. You have the minds, the eyes, and the ears to save the Church. Your mission is to see that your priests act like priests, your bishops act like bishops.”
- Fulton Sheen

"But if, in any layman who is indeed imbued with literature, ignorance of the Latin language, which we can truly call the 'catholic' language, indicates a certain sluggishness in his love toward the Church, how much more fitting it is that each and every cleric should be adequately practiced and skilled in that language!" - Pius XI
"Let us realize that this remark of Cicero (Brutus 37, 140) can be in a certain way referred to [young lay people]: 'It is not so much a matter of distinction to know Latin as it is disgraceful not to know it.'" - St. John Paul II
Grant unto thy Church, we beseech Thee, O merciful God, that She, being gathered together by the Holy Ghost, may be in no wise troubled by attack from her foes. O God, who by sin art offended and by penance pacified, mercifully regard the prayers of Thy people making supplication unto Thee, and turn away the scourges of Thine anger which we deserve for our sins. Almighty and Everlasting God, in whose Hand are the power and the government of every realm: look down upon and help the Christian people that the heathen nations who trust in the fierceness of their own might may be crushed by the power of thine Arm. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. R. Amen.

They must have edited it out – how disappointing.
There is a video clip of a Fox News report on the Latin Mass here:
http://www.myfoxstl.com/myfox/pages/News/Detail?contentId=1867997&version=2&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=VSTY&pageId=3.1.1
Unfortunately, I cannot get it to play, so I can’t tell if it was simply a report on a local Fox affiliate or on the national Fox News cable channel.
Brian: Thanks for the link. It wouldn’t play for me at first either, but I tried hitting the play button a few more times and it played. It was a nice Christmas present!
I thought it was very favorable coverage of the TLM. They said that the priest “faces God instead of the people”. They did a good job of showing why people are attracted to it – not nostalgia or unwillingness to change, but mysticism, reverence, etc. They gave a short amount of time for Fr. Richard McBrien to object, but he they didn’t make his side seem very convincing. One thing that was interesting was that Fr. McBrien was saying that people can’t participate in the Latin Mass, but all the clips they showed of the Mass the congregation was giving responses. I don’t know if this is the norm or not since I’ve only been to two places with the Latin Mass. One, the congregation said responses and chanted the Ordinary prayers with the choir, the other the congregation is completely silent during the entire Mass. Fox could have chosen a church where the people were silent and it would have weighed on Fr. McBrien’s side (I’m not saying rightfully) but they didn’t. I don’t know if this was intentional. Anyway, I was amazed at how positive the coverage was.
My brother and I were the acolytes, pictured standing along the side wall. Fr. Andreas Hellmann of the Institute of Christ the King had the Mass. It was very nice.
Brian,
Thank you for the link. I noted the announcer stated that younger families are attending: Good press!! The complaint that Fr. McBrian made, that “reading from a missal is like going to Opera and reading the program” …. well, that’s exactly how I’ve explained it before; so, I think Fr. McBrian inadvertently shot his own toe off. His was actually a great comment. Watching opera (or even foreign films) is much better in the origianl language because one gets the true feeling of the opera or movie. Reading subtitles or missal is not a hindrance — and besides … why are missals provided in English for English-language Masses?
Anyway, a very positive report on the Traditional Latin Mass.
The piece aired on Fox Report (nationally) on Christmas Day.
Guy: Besides, after a few months you don’t really need the missal anymore, except for some of the propers. After a few years, you begin to understand the Latin well enough that you don’t need the missal even for the propers. When one cares about something, one learns.
Anyway, I thought the coverage was positive, too.

I think it was a very fine piece of news report. I am appalled to hear a priest to speak with so much contempt of the faithful of the Tridentine Rite. It is still incomprehensible to me these sort of statements from a man that is supposed to be God’s minister. This man does not know charity, how can he celebrate mass with those feelings in his heart? Not only he has no charity, but his ignorance, and arrogance are just appalling. It is sacrilegious for this man to be celebrating the mass. His words expressed bigotry.
