Fr Hans Küng, R.I.P.

Pray for the repose of the soul of Fr. Hans Küng, dead at the age of 93.

Küng did untold damage to the Church and the identity of Catholics through his persistent cage-match with heresy.  He was forbidden to teach in Catholic institutions.  Some of his works were roundly condemned by the CDF.   Going back to the Council, through the Humanae vitae crisis, and onward, Küng was on the wrong side of just about everything, it seems.  He is also infamous for his opinion that Vatican II didn’t go nearly far enough.

This has earned him high marks with the Fishwrap and Amerika types.

Pray for Fr. Küng.

I’m adding the repose of Father’s soul to my Rosary intentions.

  2. Gregg the Obscure says:

what a list of clergy for whose repose i pray each morning: Bp. Morlino, Fr. Cekada, some local priests, Fr. Reginald Foster, and now Fr. Kung.

  3. MikeRogers says:

I suppose somebody will pray for him…

[Perhaps you will pray for him, maybe even once. It would be a merciful and Catholic thing to do.]

  4. robtbrown says:

Praying for the soul of someone like Hans Kung, remember that for prayer there is no dead letter office.

  5. ChrisP says:

It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Lord Jesus, may Your Divine Mercy provoke a conversion and salvation for the soul of Fr Kung.
Our Lady of Good Success, pray for him.

  6. Ms. M-S says:

A good and kind suggestion, Father. While praying unceasingly for our beloved dead, it’s so easy to forget that there are those who may well be in much greater need of being added to that list.

  7. Padre Pio Devotee says:

Done and will continue to pray for him.
Praying the Lord, through Mary, Queen of the Clergy and good St. Joseph, will be merciful upon him and all those who passed away today.

“O, St. Joseph, Foster Father of Jesus Christ, and true Spouse of the Virgin Mary, pray for us and for the suffering and dying of this day/night. Amen.”-Pious Union of St. Joseph Daily prayer

  8. catholictrad says:

When we pray for a soul who didn’t make it to purgatory, our efforts go to a forgotten soul who is in purgatory. In the case of Hans Kung, Jesus told us to pray for our enemies and we should do so realizing we have no guarantee of getting to purgatory ourselves.

May God have mercy on all of His creation as Jesus said, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.”

  9. oledocfarmer says:

He knows the Truth now. If he’s in Purgatory, you can bet he’s praying to repair any damage done.

  10. Imrahil says:

May God have mercy on his soul and grant eternal rest.

A very good friend of mine pointed out the fact that he died on the day on which the Church (well… technically it’s a popular devotion based on a vision approved by the Church, not “the Church” in the sense of official liturgy; but you see what I mean) prays to God to pour out mercy on the heretics and schismatics. There’s little doubt that he belonged in at least one of the categories, but then we pray for mercy because God does hear the prayers.

He died in his bed without having himself killed as he openly planned. That’s good for starters.

  11. Fr. Kelly says:

It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins. II Maccabbees 12:46

  12. ex seaxe says:

I clearly recall reading in one of his books that I was not compelled to believe in the virgin birth, and I was delighted, a burden had been lifted from me, I was allowed to think about it. Having been liberated, it did not take me many minutes to decide that I do believe in the virgin birth, not because I must, but because obviously God could arrange that, and 1) it was an obvious way of avoiding all the problems that would flow from people claiming blood relationship with Jesus, and 2) because the Septuagint OT is explicit in its prophecy that “a virgin will conceive”, and 3) … NT and 4) … . These many years later I might revise the order of the arguments!

  13. Aquinas Gal says:

Yes I’ve already prayed for the repose of his soul and will pray more.
As a priest he has a lot of responsibility before God but we can pray that God will have mercy on his soul. He died during the novena to Divine Mercy in preparation for next Sunday’s feast. RIP
