German Bishop at Synod (“Walking Together”) says we must stop “clinging to habits and traditionalisms” including APOSTOLIC TRADITION

I am forced to wonder if… forced to hope that… what a thing to think… that this bishop doesn’t know what Apostolic Tradition is.

What did I just write?!?

What strikes me most is how open and matter of fact he is about it all. They think they’ve won. But never forget about the true ‘God of Surprises’!

  2. Gladiator says:

If that is the case then we don’t need these faithless bishops. They are writing themselves right out of a job. (They obviously don’t believe in vocation. That is an outdated thought.)

  3. ajf1984 says:

Should Pope Francis be expecting His Excellency’s resignation notice on his desk tomorrow, then? Pretty sure there is no point to remainig a bishop if we must set aside Apostolic Tradition…

  4. Kentucky Gent says:

    This man is a heretic.

  5. Peetem says:

Wouldn’t be a miracle of miracles if Pope Francis used this synod to root out all the dissenters and ask them to resign?

  6. Kathleen10 says:

So we need to take him at his word. They mean to ignore/overturn Apostolic tradition. There’s no language problem, this is what he means.
I’m watching to see if this too shall be ignored because it would be inconvenient to acknowledge how bad this all is, how serious it is. I’m guessing as it has been for the last ten years, this too will be glossed over, and we’ll read some Catholic thinkers tomorrow explaining to us how in line that statement is with Catholicism. That every pope moved on from Apostolic Tradition, we were just too dumb to know it. Destroyers. These men are nothing but destroyers. What they are building is ugly and meaningless and few want it. Cardinals. Bishops.
    What are you waiting for.

Well, if atheist bishops like this German bishop want to throw out apostolic tradition out the window, then let us start with getting rid of the absolute obedience they expect front the rest of us. No more following their unjust and cruel decrees against the TLM and traditionalist Catholics. It’s time to bring back all cancelled priests and bishops to say Mass and administer the sacraments in these times of grave need when atheists (or worse) have taken over the reins of the Church.

  8. DeeEmm says:

I’m always repulsed by the word jumble these men use to ultimately tells us quite shamelessly that Jesus and the Church are just a seat of power and influence to them. A narcissist does not care about who is to come after to fill his office, since it can never get any better than him so disabuse yourself of any idea that there is a need for continuation. Oh, someone should tell him that Jesus does want to continue Apostolic Tradition since he created the apostles and gave explicit instructions on what he wanted them to do. Maybe that is too linear for word jumble men like him.

  9. Fr. Reader says:

He seems to be clinging to being a bishop and having authority, a position and a salary. Bishops having a salary is very traditional. He should stop clinging to his salary.

  10. hilltop says:

Let him jettison Holy Scripture while he is at it.

  11. Andreas says:

This and so much of what has been reported about both the German and Roman synods brings to mind the incident (as reported by a host of news sources) in 2016 when, at a West Point graduation ceremony, one of the newly minted officers opened his tunic and doffed his cover to reveal evidence that he was (reportedly in his own words) a “revolutionary socialist”; that is, a communist. As such, this was someone who apparently espoused political, cultural and social ideals anathema to those foundational principles and values of the country whose uniform he was wearing and to which he had earlier sworn to serve. The Army shortly thereafter discharged this individual.

With this in mind and based on the many years of reportage found here and at other Catholic websites (assuming that said reportage has indeed been accurate), one is left wondering how it is that certain individuals in the ‘uniform’ of our faith are able to retain their credibility and status whilst appearing to call for the demise of those foundational tenets, traditions and values defining the heart of the very faith to which they have been called to serve.

As I understand it, Montagna is usually a careful reporter. But when I listened to these video clips, I got the sense that the bishop explicitly and intentionally distinguished between Apostolic Traditions (with a capital T) and other (in particular, later) traditions with a lower-case t. And, notably, traditions in local churches which differ from other local churches. He clearly indicated that small t traditions can be changed. I am having trouble figuring out why he would bother to set up that distinction, if he meant that ALL of them are up for being changed, including Apostolic Traditions.

It is possible that he meant to obfuscate. But if so, then why would he later confirm to Montagna the “real” truth that he meant Traditions can be ditched? If he thought – while in front of mic’s, that the true intention needs to be hidden, he wouldn’t stop hiding it when cornered by a reporter.

I am puzzled about this report.

  13. Clinton says:

His Excellency has been Bishop of Essen, with a flock of 850,000 Catholics, for 14 years. In a recent statement at the ‘synod’, he noted that in his fourteen years as a bishop he has buried 300 priests, ordained only 15, and currently has zero seminarians.

I have a question: why would someone so manifestly unable to do his job think he should be listened to?And my follow-up question would be: why aren’t bishops who are actually competent invited to this bogus ‘synod’ instead of failures like Bishop Overbeck?
