Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham likely to have Masses “ad orientem”

This was reported on the site of The Bitter Pill (aka The Tablet).

Priests to face east at ordinariate Masses
21 October 2011

Masses celebrated by priests in the ordinariate are likely to be ad orientem, according to one of its leaders. While the liturgy for the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham has yet to be approved by the Holy See, Mgr Andrew Burnham said the Congregation for Divine Worship “is likely to commend eastward celebration, when the dynamic of the building suggests it”. Mgr Burnham also said that it may also recommend kneeling at mention of the Incarnation during the Creed.

I went to the first Anglican Use mass at St. Lukes, Bladensburg offered by Msgr. Newton of Our Lady of Walsingham. Asperges Me (in English), Ad Orientem, incense, triple Kyrie, “Any with Thy Sririt”, genuflections at the incarnatus est, many making sign of the cross during Gloria, Credo and Sanctus as in the TLM, Sign of Peace at the Offertory, canon very similar to the Roman Canon, profound bows in the sanctuary and by many parishioners at the words of institution, Communion kneeling at the rail on the tongue, Angelus after mass. It looked like reform of the reform. Brick by brick.

This is why I am absolutely keen on the Ordinariate. Thank God for this Pope of Unity and Tradition.

I am optimistic about this, but aren’t we already supposed to be worshiping ad orientem when the dynamic of the building suggests it? I think we all know how often that works out.

I am not surprised. I am a traditional Anglican priest in the United States and have said only one mass (since ordination in 1996) that was not facing east.
The one facing the people was unnerving, as they kept looking at me. I had trouble talking to God in that situation.

    @ Jim Ryon

    Reform of the Reformation, even.
